  • Russian twist or oblique twists. Not sure if they're in the database though.
  • This will make naff all difference if you continue to make the most frequent mistakes which are "wrong shoes" and "too much too soon". There is a difference between just treating the symptoms of something, and getting to the bottom of WHY you get a problem in the first place.
  • that's because outside is generally harder surfaces than cushioned treadmils, and dirt trails are a softer surface than concrete...
  • Good call!!! An office colleague of mine goes to a UK-based "Curves" and the things she gets told by "staff" are extraordinary in terms of lack of basic training knowledge and general levels of ignorance. The people who run the place don't have a bloody clue!! My colleague has gone there for over two years and looks no…
  • Shin splints can be caused by a range of factors: - worn out old shoes that have lost their cushioning - shoes that are unsuitable to your gait - mechanical problems relating to your feet / pronation / supination - doing too much too soon / increasing distance or frequency of runs over too short a period of time - being…
  • Assuming the pain is muscular, no joint-related then it's just normal DOMS because your legs are not conditioned to the distance yet. It'll come... In the meantime keep moving when you can (it's worse when you've been sitting a long time or similar). To be honest it shouldn't be that bad to necessitate proper intervention…
  • Clems... PMT is just one of those things. Despite good eating, supplements etc etc I still feel louse around that time. It's the week before that's worst for me in terms of energy slump and retaining water like a camel. The moment it's "there" I'm fine again. :ohwell:
  • I'll send you a friend request and then you'll find most of them in my list... As ever they are the people with big numbers written on their arms & legs etc.
  • If I were a doctor I would much rather that people educate themselves about simple carbs and replaced them with complex carbs instead of pushing expensive supplements onto patients that are supposed to inhibit absorbtion, while the patient remains clueless and still eats processed crap! Unfortunately I guess a lot of…
  • Could you do things together that don't involve another journey to the gym for him after a long day at work? Maybe just for starters until he gets his mojo, could you have more active weekend trips, like long bike rides outdoors together, or go hiking somewhere nice?
  • LOL @ translations... yes!! I had an enquiry regarding one of my recipes... it included a whole swede as part of a stew... er... no I don't boil whole Scandinavians as a general rule... that would be protein overload even for me... Apparently swede is "rutabaga" across the pond. :ohwell: There are a good few few…
  • Hello lovely peeps. Thank God it's Friday.... it's been quite a week at work... the usual carnage 2 weeks before the end of the financial year... books to balance, underspends to fret about etc etc.
  • I have no idea what the original first post said as it was deleted before I could look at it, however the debate about excessive cardio and weight gain is a very interesting one and one I personally experienced while training for an Ironman in 2009. Rachel Cosgrove's article "The final nail in the cardio coffin"…
  • I'm 41 in May. Don't you dare call me "elderly"... :noway: :grumble:
  • If I think how much training has changed for me since last year... Coming from an endurance cardio background I found it hard psychologically when I first started weight training, as it took time away from running, cycling etc. You have it in your head that you must do X-number of hours to maintain a certain level of…
  • me. compression tights from Skins or 2XU or Linebreak. because they aid recovery. after long runs and sometimes after hard leg workouts. yes.
  • If you struggle with it that much, then maybe it's something you should make an effort to develop, rather than trying to find new distractions.
  • It is isn't it. I'd love to print some copies and hand them to some people at my gym...
  • Do you by any chance hold onto the treadmill when you incline walk??????????? That absolutely wipes out calorie count!!! Of course the treadmill won't know whether you're holding on or not. If you do hold on, read this... http://walking.about.com/od/treadmillworkouts/a/treadmillhold.htm ... and stop it!
  • I couldn't actually swim before I entered to do Ironman Switzerland in 2009. I did a couple of TI weekend workshops and went from not being able to do 4 lengths in a standard 25m pool to being able to swim two and a half miles in little over 6 months. Google "Total Immersion". There are also loads of TI links on You Tube…
  • Supersets is just a term for back-to-back sets of usually opposing muscle groups, or push-pull moves etc, so for instance sets of bench presses superset with sets of lat pull downs etc. Combination moves? Do you mean Compound moves?? Compound moves are exercises which use a number of muscles for example squats (which use…
  • A heart rate monitor. :flowerforyou:
  • If I walk for training I log it. If I walk for shopping, at work, just general getting from a to b... I don't. When I walk for training at 3.5-4.0mph it's walking with a purpose. It's very different to strolling to the shops etc. Well to me anyway.
  • Both. Either. It doesn't really matter. Do what fit's into your lifestyle, work patterns, family commitments etc.
  • LOL Rosy!! Let's have those Numpties again!! :glasses: :smokin: (you'd never guess I spend half the week in Cheshire would you... ) :drinker:
  • Stroutman, just letting you know how I'm getting on from all the advice I've taken from the thread and received via the mails... I could tell from my clothes that I was doing ok... but when I saw a thread on the forum recently where a girl had posted that she had lost 5lb, but when her PT did her body stats she lost it all…
  • ooohh Sheffield Half.... b@stard hilly race that... did it a couple of years ago... rather you than me. :ohwell:
  •   Obviously forgot to carb load before an endurance session. Amateur!
  • You may know people in both camps but statistically people following fad diets such as SlimFast etc are less likely to succeed long term than those who make lifestyle changes in nutrition and activity levels that they intend to be permanent. It's a simple fact. That's no slight on the person, it's a problem of approach.…
  • It's misleading to say muscle burns fat... increasing lean body mass (i.e. building muscle), increases your basal metabolic rate and that IN TURN aids fat loss.
