I didn't read them in high school, but in my early twenties I picked up my first real comic (I don't count the preachy Archies at the grocery store), and was hooked. Strangers in Paradise (and I've read just about everything Terry Moore has had a hand in since). Also love the Books of Magic and all the spinoffs thereof,…

A lot of times depression will make you crave food, as a sort of self-medication. I've found it helps during the worst cravings to start writing down everything I'm feeling at that exact moment, before giving in. Sometimes I find out as I write that I'm not hungry at all - just stressed, anxious, angry, or some other…

It wouldn't surprise me if that were real. My brother worked at Taco Bell in high school, and it was his job to stir the dehydrated bean flakes into something resembling real beans. One day he dropped his watch in there by accident (slipped off while he stirred). But if they had to throw out the whole giant bin of beans,…

LOL, I relate to this! I don't tell the majority of my musician friends that I was queen of the Tennessee Wig Walk in high school. It was funny, because I was goth before it was cool, but I couldn't help swirling around to the music when the square dancing came up.

I used to have an all or nothing approach to dieting (either going so extreme that I lose a bunch and regain it, or giving up entirely and slowly gaining anyway), so right now it's ALL about moderation. Therefore, I kept my weight loss rate low in the first place at 1.5 lbs. per week, and decided to eat no more than the…

I have a nearly perpetual 1940's-era soundtrack playing in my head, no matter what I'm doing. Been like that since I was a kid (although it was classical music in my elementary years, and goth & punk rock in my early twenties). I've learned to control my urge to hum along to it, since that tends to annoy co-workers.

My kids are 8 and 11, and really picky about their foods too. Before I started getting serious about getting healthier, I'd just give in and go through drive through, rather than fight them on what to have. And, of course, as long as I was there already...yeah. Inevitable diet fail. My husband was a little adverse to the…

Well, I am pretty obese, so at this point I really AM doing it for my health more than looks, and especially to be there/be a better example for my kids. I'm pretty shocked that a co-worker would say that to you though. It's not like you had that much to lose - certainly not a health-threatening amount. And even if you…

A nap. Seriously, I had my lunch, then a workout and a TON of water, so I'm not craving food at this exact second...but man, I am tired. Four more hours of work left though. Wah.

I remember a saying someone told me - "Hurt people hurt people." For someone to be pointing out your flaws for no reason, KNOWING how hurtful it is, they have to be harboring some demons of their own. Some flaw they'd rather not see, so they focus on pointing out everyone elses, even if it hurts them. When someone calls…

Yeah, I've had that issue. I'm less so now, but I think I do let my weight get in the way of my doing things. Like dancing in public - just one bump into a person and I think I'm too big for the crowd and need to go shy off in a corner somewhere. Or taking a hike or bike ride with friends, because I'm afraid I'll hold them…

Our best guess is that he's a Manchester Terrier. The local shelter had no idea what the heck he was, and just called him a general "terrier type mix", but he looks just like that breed in the books, and seems to fit the personality they described pretty well. The state of our carpets alone proves his terrier breeding,…

I just keep a 24 oz. bottle at my desk all day and sip from it. I figured, I got this big with "mindless eating" and being surrounded by junk food, so maybe I can help do the opposite with "mindless sipping", having a bottle of water next to me at all times. I think the boss is noticing how much more quickly the water…

No, I've been waking up, downing a glass of water and getting right on the stationary bike first thing in the am. I'm early in, though, and just worried that if I try to do anything else before that, I'll make some excuse NOT to do it that day.

First - Depeche Mode, during the Violator tour (it was awesome). Ok, wait - that was the first one I actually WANTED to go to. My mom dragged me along to a Kenny Loggins concert in Bakersfield once before that, so technically THAT was my first concert, but I'd rather forget it happened. The only song I recognized in the…

Loooove Gilroy! Even if I crave garlic bread every time I'm in town. It just smells too good!

LOL, I got that so much when I was growing up there too...now I'm a Bakersfield refugee, escaped to the central coast.

Santa Cruz County! Losing weight so I can get back on those Boardwalk coasters again.

LOL, they want both, I think. At least mine does. She swore she "outgrew" her Barbies at 8, but then by 11 she dug a couple out of the garage and she now sews fashion outfits for them out of old socks now. Sock chic. But she still wants a cell phone. I can see why older generations might not see the value of a phone,…

Yeah, I had that issue too. I went to some group therapy for people with eating disorders (which often boiled down to depression at its base), and was prescribed a mild antidepressant to keep me from going too far down into it. The therapy seemed to help a lot more than the medicine did, but that's just my experience.…

I haven't done it so much when we eat out at restuarants though, because I still cringe at the idea of being "that person" with all the the high-maintenance order requests. But we almost never eat out, so that's rarely an issue.

I didn't before I started logging everything on MFP. Now I do it so often it drives my family a bit wonky. Takes a bit longer to grocery shop when I spend 15 minutes trying to find the lowest sodium sauces and such, but it makes a difference in the long run.

I can understand the frustration. My husband is out of work right now, and it's been tough making sure our fridge is stocked with lean meats, fresh produce, etc. instead of the cheap TV dinners and ramen (or fatter/cheaper cuts of meat). Plus it doesn't help that we're in an expensive area, where groceries tend to run…

My kid keeps telling me she's the ONLY sixth grader in school without a cell phone. She's been asking for a Droid though. I considered getting her one (a basic phone, not a droid) just to be able to keep in contact with her better when she's at friends places. I can only assume that's been the primary motivation for other…

I had a Holly Hobbie one for awhile (that gingham-decked girl with the ridiculously huge bonnets), then switched to brown paper bags (but drew comics on them just to feel special).

Bwahaahaaa!!!

What they said. I have one tuna salad I ALWAYS make the same way, but if I'm going rogue on it, I just have to log every last ingredient on there. It's a pain, but at least it's accurate.

A friend of mine was in her 50's when she lost over 140 lbs, and her breasts (which were up in the high EE's before) were down to a regular D, but had a lot of saggy loose skin. She wound up having breast reduction surgery and some skin removal to correct it (after about a year of maintaining the loss), and wound up…

I track everything. Fruit tends to be full of sugar, and it's easy to go overboard just assuming that any fruit is "safe" to eat in any portion. And while it's not easy to binge on, say, steamed broccoli, it's still entirely possible. I got to my highest weight by not paying attention or being accountable for what I was…

I think a large part of it is the fact that it's online, and a LOT of people (self not included) tend to think that's an excuse to be ruder, crueler, and less sensitive to others feelings than they would in public. After all, they rationalize that it's not REAL people they're insulting, just online ones. But the problem…
