  • Totally agree with the above. The other thing to remember is this. The calorie burn from walking 3 miles is the same as for running 3 miles. The differences are that running gets it done quicker, and the residual calorie burn whilst the body is cooling down is greater if you run (so the articles say). Is it worth it at the…
  • That has got to be the best response on this topic. You should care less about what others think than about your wellbeing (easy said, but not so easily done I appreciate). For me I still have the impression that people see the old me when they see me with a shirt off or in swimmers. But now I think ... "I don't care about…
  • The only thing I sleep in is the suit I was born in ... have ever since I was free to make my own choice
  • Count me in :)
  • Actually that HRM is only "water resistant" not waterproof. If you check the standard that is applied to it that refers to the item being static, at constant depth (usually 5m), in static water, and without any buttons being pressed (or other movement), and for a limited time period. It also says clearly in the literature…
  • What? This old chestnut again? Please do not think I am anti-US, because I'm not, but the simple truth is this. No matter what you might like to think, the Internet is not controlled / owned / governed by America / Americans. The rest of the world have the capability to rehost sites and thus the US Internet economy would…
  • Absolutely right ... If they're under target but with processed food that's fine because within target is the aim, learning "better choices" is often a secondary achievement that come from staying within target. Let's face it, target hitting is hard if all you eat is "junk food". So, for me, an occasional "treat" is…
  • Mineral water and a fish oil capsule ... Happy Humpday folks!
  • A perfect example of why you should not believe everything you read. Not least because swimmers are thin and muscular because of their diet and training regime, never mind the rest of the hyped claims for the cold water effect. There is no doubt that there is a thermodynamic effect, and marginally increased…
  • Serial logger here ... open diary, happy to share and be mutually supportive. Anyone can add me if they're happy to have a 630 day addict :)
  • lol dude ... the poster said he's allergic to milk products ... these are loaded with whey protein, so are absolutely no use to him at all (or me), but thanks for the thought.
  • You are not alone! I am allergic to dairy, egg, gluten / gliadin; as such I can't have anything with oats, barley or rye in as well ... it makes finding protein supplements difficult unless you can take lean meats, chicken breast and the like with you. There is only so much jerky you can eat! I'm going to check the…
  • Been here (Channel Islands) for over 600 days ... happy to add new friends
  • I too have the gluten issue, so can sympathise. I also have the same issue with dairy and eggs, but it's no longer too much of a challenge as long as I'm careful. Fibre isn't a problem though as I eat plenty of whole grain rice, and quinoa as well as fruits, potatoes and vegetables. I've never needed to use any fibre…
  • This is sensible. In short, any HRM is going to be more accurate than the averages that MFP gives, because the HRM is based on your actual exertion. BUT, a cheap HRM costing $10 isn't likely to be as accurate as say a Garmin or Polar version. Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where you do get what you pay for!
  • It's a shame that the stats for distance walked appear to be total garbage. Have walked over 20km in the last 2 days playing the game (measured on Mapmyfitness) but Ingress only shows 1km.
  • I'm similar, 5'10" and am currently 11 stone 4. In places I'm way too skinny, but in others I've still got fat to get rid of. So, for me, by the time the muscle replaces the fat I would estimate I will be more like 11stone 7 or just over. For me, less than 11 stones is too little. But it does vary a lot between body types.
  • For me, this just about sums up why these drugs are exactly the wrong approach.
  • The only things not logged are spices, and natural foods with zero value. Anything with zero value, but which is processed is logged to allow for the sodium content etc.
  • This is recommended imho.
in Calories? Comment by Nige_Gsy July 2014
  • Spot on! Just be consistent in what you log on MFP, use one day each week, and preferably at the same time of day (morning seems to be the norm). That way you can keep an eye on the general trend rather than getting hung up on changes which can be misleading on a daily basis.
  • This, is great advice, which together with the book Total Immersion will help you. But, the best thing you can do is get coaching / encouragement from a human being. The ocean can be a very different place to the pool (I swim in the ocean all the time, and never in a pool), and it changes from hour to hour never mind day…
  • I've been on here for quite a while now, and have nearly reached my goal. But I intend to stay around and help others if I can by supporting, encouraging, and sharing my experiences where they are asked for. So, if you want to hook me up, please send me a friend request and lets see how it goes
  • This sums it up in a nutshell. Everything Kim says I would agree with; it is a journey that needs hard work and commitment together with support from like minded people. If you wanted to add me for support purposes feel free.
  • Bumping this response. The initial response is at best a dangerous one.
  • Frankly, it's not the end of the world. The connection is what is most important; mentally, sense of humour, intelligence level, likes and dislikes, and all those things. Undoubtedly, there is a subconscious effect, but being a personality match / best friend is what matters long term.
  • Welcome Russquatch. Firstly, no need to feel overwhelmed, there's plenty of folks here all in the same space and all looking for guidance and support. I certainly felt that way when I started out too. If I can help at all I will do, and you can friend request me if you think that will help in any way. The advice you've…
  • Hi Jenn, I've been on here for some time, and have reached goal weight give or take a couple of pounds. More than happy to have more friends to share the journey with. If I can help, anyone along the way I'm happy to try to do so. If anyone that responds to your thread wants to add me, feel free. We WILL get to where we…
  • For me, this pretty much sums up my experiences. Basically, you will only lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume, and swimming burns calories, so it's going to help. I started swimming more seriously on 1st July, and my weight previously had been up / down around a pound each week as I'm on a maintenance…
