  • Riding about 3 times a week. Generally between 15 and 35 miles. 31 miles today. I plan to do 48 miles before the end of the month. BTW, I am also active on the Clydedales and Athenas forum over at Bikeforums.net. Nice people and generally pretty encouraging.
  • I wouldn't do any weights without checking with a doctor. You may need physical therapy.
  • That is a good point. 3 glasses of wine is almost an entire meal's worth of calories. That means that to lose weight, something has to give, and that something is probably nutrition.
  • It is a good cardio workout without the impact on the joints from running, but unlike cycling, it is somewhat a weight bearing exercise. But, it isn't really a full body workout. For strength, and flexibility, you need to do other activities.
  • Funny how we perceive things. I don't know you, so I cannot say for sure, but generally, I wouldn't consider 3 glasses of wine a night (for a woman), every night a casual couple of drinks, but rather perhaps someone on the cusp of a drinking problem. I had this conversation with my doctor recently and he suggested a max of…
  • Don't know if I have just a May Goal. 1,000 miles for the season seems reasonable. Also, I hope that sometime this summer I will do a Century, or at least a Metric Century. Still breaking in my Brooks Saddle that I purchased with my new bike last season. Conveniently, I just changed the battery in my computer, so whatever…
  • Quite right. Unfortunately, this is a lesson I only learned with experience. IMO exercise is still important in keeping the metabolism up. That said, I have out eaten my gains in the past. Some years ago, I added cycling to my regimen. I wrongly assumed that because I was putting in an extra 5 to 7 hours on the bike every…
  • Whatever exercise you like enough to do consistently (4 or 5 times a week) is best for weight loss. That and maintaining a healthy diet with a moderate calorie deficit over a long period of time. Everything fits together. A yoga, pilates, or stretching routine might not be much of a calorie burner, but if it keeps your…
  • Stay on an even keel. It is great to feel motivated by a good week, but the point is to stick with the program long enough to make it a habit and once you do that, to make it a lifestyle. If I remember correctly, I was up 1 1/2 lbs after one week. It wasn't until week 3 that the lbs started to come off. One week is…
  • Posted a similar topic, but failed to see this one. Busting through my plateau and getting to the 230s. Getting my bike out and riding outdoors several times a week in addition to my usual routine.
  • Hi Misty. I hear you. I have lost and gained weight a number of times in my life, starting all the way back when I was 15 (I am 47 now.) I was a chubby teenager heading for 200 lbs, when I turned things around the summer I turned 15 using my mother's weight watchers materials, riding my ten speed, and practicing martial…
  • Quite an epiphany you had. All of us on this site are dealing, in one way or another, wth a flawed relationship with food. It is a thing all overweight, and recovering overweight people have in common.
  • I have to agree. There is no such thing as eating right for your blood type. Just greedy people stealing money by writing books based on pseudo science.
  • Is this for real or are you trolling?
  • Yes, it is a fad for many, but not all people. Every couple of years, someone comes up with a diet that cuts out an entire food group. The difference in this case is, there actually are people who need to be gluten free. So one good thing about this diet fad is that people who need to be gluten free for medical reasons…
  • The body needs fuel, especially if you are exercising. The idea is to eat at a modest deficit over a long period of time. Eat too little and your metabolism will slow down.
  • Food is for fuel and sex is for reproduction. If you really believe what you say, you should never have sex just for fun. Only when you want to have children. It could be that the diet only mentality leads to yo yo weight loss and obesity. That is, without exercise, you need to eat less and less to continue losing weight.…
  • Have always been somewhate overweight, from grade school on. I can still remember kids teasing me about it in 3rd grade, and again in middle school especially. Even though I started doing sports in 5th, I managed to eat enough that I was still chubby. I finally managed to get control of my weight in high school, going from…
  • Good for you getting started again. I wonder though, why did you give up after losing 40 lbs? Is there something else going on in your life you need to address first that is hindering your progress?
  • I would say, it depends. You will eventually have a cheat meal. With the best of intentions, you will find yourself out with friends or family and voila, find yourself over indulging a little. Just make sure it happens no more than once a week, and make sure your cheat meal isn't a cheat week. The question is, should you…
  • Lifting is beneficial, but you shouldn't be gaining that much weight. If you are, adjust your diet.
  • Also, it is pretty clear that the food, diet, pharmaceutical, and health club industries all have a pretty good thing going.
  • I just saw the movie, and that change is especially egregious. They ought to be looking at the extremes (extreme underweight and extreme overweight) and leave those with BMI in the high 20s alone. Putting my own cards on the table, my goal weight of 199lbs would put me at a BMI of 29.4, or overweiight. The movie was both…
  • When you reach your goal, a liittle wine wouldn't be bad. Until then, maybe just an every now and then treat.
  • You can't gain 2 lbs of muscle in a week. It is liikely water. Cut carbs a little, stay away from packaged and processed foods, drink lots of water, and eat plenty of fresh vegetables and the water should drop off in a few days. Keep eating at a deficit and the weight should start to drop off in a few weeks.
  • One week is way too early to say. 2 lbs weight gain in the first week is possible not because you gained muscle, but more likely that you are retaining water. My first week on MFP, my weight was also slightly up. It is disappointing, but you need to stick with it for at least a few months, then if you are still not losing…
  • Ozaukee County.
  • Lots of good advise so far. It is a minefield, but with a little knowledge, you can successfully navigate restaurant food. Especially agree to watch portion sizes, stick with lean meat, fish, or chicken. Ask for steamed vegetables instead of french fries. Bread, muffins, rolls, chips and other freebies should be eaten only…
  • If you are finding almost every woman you approach just isn't interested, you might be approaching those who would not find you attacttive under any circumstances. Alternately, if you are getting first dates, but few second and third dates, it isn't your physique, but something you are doing that is turning them off. That…
  • Lots of good advice so far. I have never been skinny, or underweight, but I have been in shape, out of shape, normal weight (but on the heavy side of normal) and obese. Putting on a few lbs of muscle (not sure about 20 lbs, but with effort you should be able to pack on a few lbs) will make a difference at the margin. Let…
