May fitness and weight loss goals.
OK, MFP friends. April is almost over. Only 4 weeks till Memorial Day, which for many means shorts, T shirts, and swimsuits. For those of you who have slipped or who are just getting started, this is your last chance to take a few lbs off before the weather forces you to (partially) disrobe in public. And for those of you…

9 months in
Just a little shy of 45 lbs so far. Prologue. This is me in the summer of 2011. I don't know how much I weighed here, but it must have been a lot. http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag138/mrt26/95748bc2-04cb-48f1-8fcb-cd2e75308477_zps80d8ed9b.jpg September 2012, 6 weeks in.…

Lbs. the movie
http://www.lbsthemovie.com/ Saw it last week on Neflix streaming. It has a documentary feel. Terrific little indie film about a man who leaves his home and moves to upstate New York to deal with his food addiction. It is a movie with a lot of heart, and I found myself rooting for the guy.

Lessons gleaned from wrestling with a weight problem
In more or less chronological order that I figured these things out. Stop eating cheap sweet and salty snacks. Sweet, salty and fatty. Watch out for foods that combine two out of these three things. Consider never eating foods that combine all three. Combine modest calorie restriction with regular exercise. (After being…

Foods you still enjoy in moderation
Sort of the flip side of foods you eliminated. So, what are high calorie foods you enjoy in moderation? Cheeseburgers (single, no mayo, lots of lettuce and tomato) Fast food buritto places (no giant tortilla, no sour cream, lots of salsa, grilled chicken) pizza (cheese or vegetable toppings, no meat) Beer (one or two a…

Landmarks to shoot for
Setting intermediate goals is import- ant to reaching one's ultimate goal. Some of those are pretty universal (50 lbs, 100 lbs, halfway to goal, etc), other goals are more personal. What are yours? Heres a few of mine. My starting weight : 287 lb My Goal Weight: 199 lb Intermediate landmarks. 270 lbs - My starting weight…

Any reaon why you shouldn't exercise every day?
Other than lack of time. Not talking about overtraining, but rather doing 30 to 60 minutes of some form of exercise every day. In the beginning, I gave myself 2 to 3 days of rest per week. Even when sore or tired, I now find that doing some light cardio, yoga, or stretching the day after a weight day or intense cardio…

Weight that makes you happy if you could maintain forever?
We all have our goals, some published here, some not. And most of us are aware of the possibility of regaining some, or even all of the weight we are losing. So, is there a weight short of your ultimate goal that, if you could be assured of maintaining more or less forever, you would be happy to stop at? For me, it would…

What are your "red lines" foods and why?
What I mean by red lines, are foods that either trigger a lifestyle change for the worse (or put another way, a diet killer), or that signal an abandonment of your healthy eating habits? Here are a few that history has taught me need to be avoided or at the very least, eaten with extreme caution.. Here are mine: French…

Weight gain season upon us
I used to say that end of October through New Years is eating season. Of course, none of us plan to succomb to temptation. The question is how?

Weight loss slowing down
After a very encouraging August and September, weight loss this month has slowed down. Not prepared to call it a plateau, yet as the trend is still down. Just closer to 1 lb a week the last couple of weeks rather than the 2 lbs/week I had been doing. Maybe a big drop is just around the corner, or maybe not? I would have…

Anybody make his or her problem worse through crash dieting?
I know people who had, maybe a slight weight problem who made their problem worse due to crash or borderline starvation diets. I have always struggled with weight issues and tried to lose weight many times. I wonder if my early efforts contributed to later weight gains. I saw it happen to one of my brothers. He didn't…

On no longer having that overstuffed feeling
What I mean is, that feeling you have where you just overdid it and your stomach feels like it is going to burst, your eyelids feel heavy, and all you want to do is go home and sleep it off. I think I might be enjoying eating out more since I started this project 3 months ago. Except for one time in early September when my…

How many times in your life have you lost 30 lbs or more?
This is nothing to be proud of, except maybe as a testament to our collective refusal to accept living a life of obesiity. My record 1. 1980 - High school, wanting to look better and tired of getting teased for being chubby. 30 lbs over the summer 2. 1987 - College - Put weight on freshman year. Finally got tired of it and…

My new go to breakfast
Protein shake with either steel cut oats or, if I don't have time to cook those, Hodgson Miill Multigrain Hot Cereal. Usually blend some mix of frozen bananas, strawberries, or blueberries iinto the smoothie. About 400 to 500 calories, low in fat and sugar, high in fiber, and protein. Keeps me going much longer than cold…

How/When, if ever to tell someone he/she is obese.
Discussions about the Wisconsin newscaster got me thinking about this. Most discussions of that story have focused on whether the guy who wrote her is a bully. If the guy in Wisconsin was rude when, if ever, is it appropriate to tell someone he or she needs to lose weight? And how should the topic be brought up? Most of us…

Are MFP estimates correct? Overestimate calories burned?
I noticed this when I logged in for different cardio that MFP is incredibly generous in its estimates for cardio. Don't get me wrong, if iis correct, I will take it, but I don't believe that I am actually burning 600 or 700 calories doing eliptical, or spinning. By the same token, I jogged the other day and MFP only…
