  • Last February after a long overdue physical, I was forced to see that I weighed about 30 lbs more than I thought I weighed. It happens. After a few abortive attempts at losing weight, I finally got serious in July. It isn't easy, but if you log your food, weigh yourself regularly, eat at a deficit, and get some exercise,…
  • For me, running is a kind of gold standard of cardio fitness. Though I like things like biking, spinning, and step, running is a kind of reality check because I know what I was able to do at age 21, 25, and 30.
  • Daily. There are plusses and minuses to weighing in daily but I recommend it for the following reasons. If your weight goes up a couple of lbs in one day, you notice it immediately. That is a good thing. Second, it forces you to stay with the program. My wife did Weight Watchers, though she recently stopped. She told me it…
  • Pretty much my position, though I don't travel much for work. Still, there are times when I need something quick, and instant oats fit the bill. I usually mix it with some milk and protein powder. Not as healthy as steel cut oats, but healthier option than a muffin, or even most cold cereals.
  • Pretty much daily. Regular weigh ins are a good motivator. I know others do it weekly or monthly, but right now, I find that knowing I have to weigh in every morning keeps me on track. If I only weighed myself every month, I would be too tempted to take a couple of days, or even weeks off.
  • Something to that, for sure. In college, I spent a year abroad and lost 15 or 20 lbs without really trying. (Was still big by European standards) Put it back on within months of coming home.
  • Some of my earliest memories are of being teased for being chubby, so basically this is a problem that started very early. I managed to get things under control when I turned 15 by exercising and changing my diet somewhat. Managed to more or less keep things under control through the rest of high school, only to gain the…
  • 25 years ago, I worked a temp job for a hypno therapist, and that is exactly what he did. Suggested an association of high fat foods with something disgusting. And yes, it was a load of bunk. The guy held this thing at a hotel conference room and didn't even have permanent employees. Pretty much says it all.
  • You might need help beyond what people on a message board can offer. Honestly, it sounds like you have a full blown eating disorder.
  • My understanding is, 15% is almost impossibly lean for women. You might get there, but also might find it hard to maintain. Here is a link to an article on the subject. http://www.builtlean.com/2012/09/24/body-fat-percentage-men-women/
  • One aspect of denial. Another is, not noticing the rapidly expanding waistline and large belly staring back at you in the morning. Now that I am actually thinking about it, in many ways I notice my stomach more now, when it is actually objectively smaller than 6 or 8 months ago. We just have an ability to push unpleasant…
  • Hmm. Disagree somewhat with the above posters. While males don't have a societal pressure to be small, there is still pressure for young males to be lean and athletic. As an overweight child and pre teenage male, I felt a huge stigma being overweight. IMO, men feel just as depressed and vilified being overweight as women.…
  • And best of luck to you as well. :) The first injury happened in an exercise class, where I pushed too hard and partially tore a rotator cuff. I didn't need surgery, as it apparently healed eventually, though it took a long time. The second injury happened while, of all things, playing basketball with my young son.…
  • I lost 55 to 60 lbs in '04 into early '05. (not sure exactly as I started losing weight before weighing in last time, but I was in the high 260s 2 weeks in, so I think I was somewhere around 270) Got down at one point as low as around 210 which, while not the lowest I have been, was lower than I had been since the early…
  • There is the curious complimenter. I professional colleague noticed my weight loss and asked me how I did it. So, I told her about this place. Then there is the backhanded complimenter. It is sort of over the top, innapropriate, but with a twist that lets you know what that person really thought of you before. Examples. My…
  • I think you have your answer. It isn't some magic alchemy where the alcohol calories disappear into the ether, but rather, your friend works a lot of it off at the gym.
  • Interesting theory, but I don't buy it. If anything, straight alchohol gets absorbed more readily than does wine or beer. Just less volume, and if consumed without high calorie mixers, I suppose one could keep from gaining too much weight that way, as long as one avoids late night runs for sliders, chicken, or pancakes. My…
  • Everybody is different. I used to work with a guy who had chips and Coke for lunch every day. Dude was skinny as a rail. That kind of stuff, and a lot of other junk food, is like crack cocaine for me. Once I go down that path, bad things happen. Just keep at it with your healthier foods, and cut down your portions, or…
  • Agreed. My wife buys into that blood type bs, I don't. IMO, it is the dietary equivalent of astrology.
  • I do my routine, just just log it on MFP as "weights". I picked an arbitrary number of sets and reps.
  • All good advice, though I would advise OP to face her fear and get on that scale. I would even go so far as to advocate weighing yourself regularly. If not daily, than at least a couple of times a week. The more often you weigh yourself, the less you will fear it.
  • You can do what you want, but I try not to eat back calories saved from other days, or the flip side of that, borrowing calories from the future to indulge today. That is the sort of thinking that got me in trouble in the first place. Every day is a new day. I try to meet my goals from the day. If I went over yesterday,…
  • Two sides of the same coin.
  • I don't go there any more with my wife. I have, on occasion, made comments about treats she brings into the house, like chocolate, frozen custard, cake, potato chips, and microwave popcorn. She usuallly reminds me that she didn't complain when I used to bring home sliders, fried chicken, chinese takeout, and ho hos. So…
  • Funny, I am sort of in the same position. My wife started on Weight Watchers in the spring while my motivation was, frankly, not high. In fact, she probably would have accused me of sabatoging her efforts by bringing junk food into the house from April or May through the end of June while she was weighing her foods (and…
  • Jack Lalanne once said he hates exercise, but loves the results. No easy answer, but figure out a way to make it work for you.
  • Eat more than 600 calories? Seriously. I spoke with my former trainer about this. It is crazy to try to exercise on so few calories.
  • You are pretty close to your goal weight. If you need a new suit, might as well get one now. A few lbs shouldn't be a problem either way. It is a problem to have a tailor alter a suit after you lose 50 lbs or more (if it can be done at all, the labor involved in recutting pants and jacket often is more than the cost of a…
