  • I'm 39, was diagnosed type 2 at age 34. A1c was 8.5 or so at the time and we were checking every 3 months initially. I got it down under 6 and we moved to every 6 months. 2 years ago I started a strict LCHF diet and had two A1c in a row of 4.5 then 4.3 and we stopped checking it. Dr asks if I am still on diet, if yes no…
  • Oh god if that improved blood work mine would be pristine by now with all of the bad decisions I have made in the past in relationships that I eventually ditched!
  • Good to have both of you here. Welcome!
  • HDL has been such a pain in the *kitten* for me. Before keto is was 26, so totally in the tank. First few months on keto got it up to 30 and it stayed there for awhile. A year in the gym and more activity (though still not active... outside the gym I'm still mostly sedentary) and my last result finally put my HDL at 40.
  • The bj's I'm a member of in Raleigh carries kerrygold, and I'm pretty sure I've seen it in either wal mart or Kroger around here as well, though that's a more recent development.
  • I love the new logo, good job :)
  • I'm 6 weeks into ICF (Ice Cream Fitness, a 5x5 program similar to the above mentioned StrongLifts, just with more accessory work), I'm also taking a yoga class once a week and trying to stretch every day. But I'm still struggling with the occasional cheat day, or days, so its hard to draw any conclusions about anything for…
  • Which kind of sugar alcohol? Different ones have different gi indexes. Malitol iirc is up around 40, and I would not count as zero carbs. Erythrotol on the other end I would count as zero for myself. Packaging will discount all of them fully. That is my understanding at least!
  • Check the "start here" thread which has a link to a keto calc to help figure that out. I'd link it but on mobile, sorry. Easiest thing to do early on is to just enter 25g for your carbs and then let it give you a protein range and fat amount. If you are inactive pick near the bottom end of the protein range.
  • No worries at all :) "Find a new doctor" has been my advice to folks here many many times! This is definitely something I struggle with, but I'm ok with where I'm at for now. I am sure I could find someone better suited for me, but that might involve finding 10 docs who tell me keto is killing me first, I'm not ready for…
  • Thanks @wabmester for the additional details, that really helps! He doesn't want to put me on statins out of nowhere after a recent improved result. I was taking Simvastatin since about 2008 or so when I was officially diagnosed as a diabetic (I likely was diabetic as far back as 2005 but wasn't seeing any doctors then).…
  • Ugh, that is frustrating with the VA Clinic. Makes no sense to not cover this test to me. On the rest, unfortunately, my doctor is mostly humoring me here. I requested this test specifically once I got on keto and started reading all of the cholesterol discussions that take place on various low carb forums. My doctor found…
  • I'll leave this here, since I got bloodwork done last week and my doctor's website has this neat tool to compare past results. I started keto January 2014. Unfortunately I didn't start requesting the lipoprotein NMR test until after I was already on keto for awhile so before that I only have the old crappy test. My HDL…
  • Huh, fascinating, thanks for sharing :)
  • I do the exact same. As long as I stay under on carbs I don't worry too much about the rest, but this is the ideal. I prefer grams to percentages.
  • Congrats on your progress, that is awesome!
  • Thanks for the replies guys. Good news, I did actually get right back on keto this time, instead of falling off for days or weeks (well, assuming I stay on, but its been 3 days w/ no issues, its nice to have just a 1 day slip up instead of going crazy for weeks!) This cheat was a combination of the hunger and frustration,…
  • Great thread! A year ago I was already 9 months into keto. I actually weigh about 10 pounds more right now than I did then due to a difficult summer where I gained 30 pounds back. But I think I am much healthier right now anyway. I've been working out pretty consistently over the last year and have been through 3 physical…
  • Sweets weren't my weakness when I ate poorly, just general crappy eating, fast food with lots of breading and bread, etc. But now? If I fall off the wagon I will end up at Krispy Kreme literally every single day until I get back on, whether I'm off track for one day or one month.
  • When I was counting fiber religiously I was making a chia seed pudding daily. Quarter cup chia seeds, almond milk, cocoa, heavy cream, artificial sweetener, put in fridge for awhile and the seeds absorb a lot of the almond milk.
  • For folks that do it, pre-workout carbs should be dextrose. Check out the TKD protocol at https://www.reddit.com/r/ketogains/wiki/index. However, I am pretty sure if you're just getting back into keto after being away the rather strong advice is to simply suck it up for a couple months and realize your performance will…
  • Two meals a day for me on most days, occasionally a 3rd that's really small compared to the other two and could just be a "snack".
  • Specifically on this, that FAQ will address the notion that you *need* carbs post workout. When carbs are discussed for those that do high intensity exercise, its 100% in terms of adding carbs (and specifically, dextrose) BEFORE working out so that you are able to hit and stay at your very high intensity during your…
  • This 100 times over :) My favorite thing from the ketogains FAQ:
  • Its not really. The beginner recommendation that I tend to make is to start at 20 if you're just going all in/cold turkey for keto and to aim for that low number of carbs to just aboslutely 100% guarentee that you get into ketosis and get keto adapted, and then to experiment with your carb count and how you feel if you…
  • Wow @Sunny_Bunny_ that is quite the change over the years, so awesome! Also, when you hit your goal weight you should definitely break out the cat ears and strike that same pose from the 2012 pic for comparison. ;) RAWR.
  • I will almost certainly aim to stay low carb and likely very low carb forever. Two things I can see messing with: Right now I aim to not go over 20g carbs a day. Maybe I'll experiment with 50 and see how I do? Right now I feel like with small increases in carbs I have issues with cravings, but its something I can see…
  • My personal standard advice for new folks (and I've seen a bunch of others say the same thing) is for the first couple weeks to really, really not worry about calories at all. Just eat low carb foods, and eat whenever you're hungry, even if it seems like you're eating all the time or eating a ridiculous amount early on. It…
  • I'm still that way after over a year and a half. Others have also posted about sweet things not tasting as good anymore, or too sweet, etc. I have not experienced that change either. Maybe it just never happens for some people. Good job catching yourself quickly and making a real effort to get back to basics and to get…
  • I've been at 20g carbs as my limit since January 2014. I'm not even considering changing that until I get to my goal weight. I did slip up for much of a couple months in the summer of 2015, so I haven't been on 20g/carbs a day straight through for the last 20 months, but I did go 15 months that way and once I got out of my…
