  • regarding the ketoacidosis stuff, its definitely not that: Thanks, I'm sharing all of this stuff. I agree with all of you on all of this, and I've been taking openings when possible to gently nudge in this direction for awhile now. My current idea is to see if I can help get her carbs consistently down and seeing where the…
  • Blood sugar control while eating enough carbs to avoid ketosis is the only part of the conversation currently. BMI wise she is slightly underweight but I don't' think its a concern of her or her doctors currently. I think she's needlessly worried about ketosis, she's afraid of additional stress on her kidneys and my…
  • Definitely. A lot of people find themselves naturally doing some form of intermittent fasting on keto simply because they aren't hungry as often. There's no need to force 3 meals a day or anything, you'll settle into a new routine soon enough most likely :)
  • Most of the Atkins Brand dessert products contain Malitol which is very high on the glycemic index for a sugar alcohol. For a brand named after Dr Atkins and his diet I find that very problematic. http://www.sugar-and-sweetener-guide.com/glycemic-index-for-sweeteners.html Dextrose and Glucose rate a 100 on the glycemic…
  • My first meal is almost always bacon and eggs and an avocado. I tend to just eat two meals, and sometimes a snack. The snack is almost always almonds. Dinner is a rotation of chicken, ground beef, pork chops, streak, fish, and shrimp - with a veggie, usually broccoli or green beans. I occasionally get bored and decide to…
  • The idea that you need carb days is a myth. I'm certainly not perfect, I have my slip-ups, or sometimes planned brief breaks for social occasions. A couple years ago I did keto for 18 months straight with only one cheat day on Thanksgiving. I'm sure others have done it for much longer than me, but that's my own experience.…
  • I personally am aiming to be able to go off plan briefly for special occasions and to hop right back on once life returns to normal. If I traveled a lot or was the type of person that had big social events on a very regular basis, I wouldn't, but for me these things are few and far between. I don't really worry at all…
  • I was totally fine going back on Metformin when I saw my primary care doc recently for a checkup after a couple years off of keto and a lot of weight gain. I regret not being responsible enough to go to the doctor during that time when I was off keto and struggilng and getting back on the meds a long time ago. I kept…
  • You'll get a lot of varied answers here, and none of them are necessarily wrong. I personally do best on a ketogenic diet, limiting my carbs to 25g or less a day. Many others reduce their carb count to 100g and do great with that.
  • I count sporadically. I find counting calories every so often helps with some of the creep that naturally happens to me. Over a month or two I'll find that I'm all of a sudden grabbing 2 servings of shredded cheese out of the bag instead of 1, and I'm no more hungry once I tighten that stuff back up. Cheese and nuts are my…
  • I haven't experimented too much yet but Great Low Carb Bread Company Everything Bagels and Mama Lupe's low carb tortillas both worked nicely for me.
  • CAC Score: 0 YAY! 20 years of treating my body like garbage haven't doomed me yet. DEXA SCAN: My weight on the scanner was 304.4 pounds. Fat Mass: 146.9 pounds Lean Mass: 149.9 pounds BMC (bone mineral content): 8.5 pounds Body Fat %: 49.7% Bone density numbers are nearly off the charts good, but that was never a concern.…
  • I'm confused. OP said Monday through thursday he's eating all his calories at around 3:30 and 6pm. What about Friday-Sunday? Is he fully fasting those three days, or eating on a different kind of schedule. I'm confused b/c of the references to feasting in the thread. 20:4 daily intermittent fasting while eating at a…
  • If you're eating at 3:30 and 6pm you're basically doing 20:4'ish intermittent fasting. There's nothing extreme about that at all. You don't need to eat 3 meals (or 6) a day or anything. As long as you're getting enough protein and that is working for you then you're in great shape IMO.
  • Nothing in that article references the guy fasting though.
  • That's my understanding as well. He's stated that he's never needed to refer a patient for loose skin surgery after weight loss, even patients who lost 100+ pounds, and hypothesizes about autophagy, but there's nothing concrete there. For me, so far, ADF combined with keto seems like a great match and I'll just keep my…
  • I think your protein is low. Depending on age your calories might be making for a pretty aggressive deficit too? But regardless of age, Im seeing 65g protein as the minimum suggested on the site I always used in the past (https://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ )
  • Finally got my Cholesterol results. Unlike the NMR test that I got from my last doctor, this doesn't have standard LDL/HDL numbers (in addition to particle numbers and other stuff). As expected, all of my cholesterol results are bad and in the high risk range. HDL Particle Number: 17869 (21837-45671 reference range) Small…
  • As some others have referenced, carb loading is usually in reference to very high intensity exercise, and for most not really even necessary there. I don't think I'd even do that until fully keto adapted (give it 2-3 months). But if you're just talking about eating keto to try to lose weight or to get healthier in general,…
  • haha, maybe! They said that they recommend a 30 minute nutrition session for some folks as well, but I think that would be an extra $40. It would be REALLY tempting to accept that nutrition session... Nutritionist: "What do you eat?" Me: "Nothing, ideally. For the month of September my goal is to only eat for about 12 out…
  • The first 2-3 days after my two extended day fasts my blood sugar was really strange. 145 fasting blood sugar one morning, 180 after one meal that did admittedly have a joseph's lavash bread (8g carbs) but was otherwise fine. I was keto going into them and remained keto afterwards. After those first 2-3 days as I…
  • Thanks for the warning Knit. This is at a sports medicine clinic that is entirely interested in body composition, that's what they advertise it for here, so I'm in good shape :)
  • There's a sports medicine center locally where I can get one for $75, so I've got that on the books for early next week, and as long as I keep up the fasting regimen and continue to lose weight I figure I'll go back at some regular interval to see how things go.
  • I suppose I'll keep this thread open/going for additional stuff. I'm still waiting on my Lipoprotein NMR results, b/c my doctors office had to use a different lab its taking forever, and they're mailing me the results. I don't care so much about the numbers right now as I do the change over time, so that's fine. I have a…
  • I know they're not perfect, but since I've started using a mix of Alternate Daily Fasting with some extended fasts mixed and intend to continue that for the duration of my weight loss, the chatter here has me curious. I'm going to see if I can get in for a DEXA scan in the next week or so and get a few of them over the…
  • My routine is changing a lot due to implementing fasting in various forms, but typically: 4 strips of thick cut bacon/4 eggs/half an avocado for my first meal, some cheddar melted on the eggs and some salsa on them - this is rarely when i wake up. If I wake up at 10am, this will usually happen between 2pm-3pm. I'm not…
  • Ehhh, I've already spent a ton of money on Amazon this weekend, what's $30 more :D It will be nice to stop buying bags of cheese once I run out of what I've got.

  • I take Magnesium daily (anything but magnesium oxide which absorbs terribly I believe is ok). I recently switched to Doctor's Best brand based on this: https://labdoor.com/rankings/magnesium?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1sHN2KWE1gIVw7fACh1FrQMMEAAYASAAEgIR1fD_BwE and on seeing others reference that brand here as their brand of…
  • https://idmprogram.com/fasting-and-muscle-mass-fasting-part-14/ Dr Fung links to a number of studies while making his case there. I am not smart enough to be able to read through them all to tell if he's 100% correct on everything there or if he's skewing anything to push his agenda/program, but I know a lot of folks here…
  • https://reddit.com/r/vegetarianketo is a thing. Even if you're not looking to lower your carbs to the point of ketosis, I assume it would be a good place to start if you're looking for folks that have had success and for tips on how you could potentially change your macronutrient ratios while remaining vegetarian.
