For me, I've been going to the gym for the last year 3x a week and have never had a problem sticking to my 20g carb limit. I've just started a structured lifting program this week and am excited to see how that goes (I'm doing Ice Cream Fitness which is similar to Stronglifts 5x5 with more accessory work on top of the big…

You may struggle some when you're just getting back into low carb. Performance tends to drop for the first... 3-6 weeks on keto (I think that's about the right timeframe), but it will recover back to about where you were before once you're adapted. There's nothing wrong w/ going up to 50g carbs at all, but if you're newly…

This is great and reminds me of one of my own biggest NSV's. I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer, the knob that controls the thermostat broke a few years ago, but apparently replacing it requires replacing the entire front plate and is a $700+ ordeal, which seems ridiculous to me and I refuse to pay for that. But a mechanic…

25 is great and yes you should absolutely get into ketosis and stay there if you stick with that amount (as long as you are also following the "high fat" part of LCHF of course. All protein and no fat would mess things up)

This group is the only reason I come to the site really, and I'm here every day.

@Sunny_Bunny_ http://lowcarbdoctors.blogspot.com/ They list 5 doctors in your location (and others in your state, I dunno if any of them are close). Most of them look to be naturopath/at an integrative medicine place that I assume aren't covered by insurance, but one is a family physician. I wonder if there's anything you…

Quoting this since I couldn't have said any of it better at all. Not using punishment/reward system around food is key for me, and being gentle and undersanding with the fact that you aren't going to be perfect (not as an excuse to cheat!! But because none of us are going to be perfect all the time) removes so much…

http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ Play around with that to get a general feel. Its not uncommon to lose a lot of water weight immediately and then to not lose anything for a couple weeks as your body adjusts to a diet fueled by fat instead of one fueled by carbs.

YMMV. Try them, definitely. Check your blood sugar after if you have the tools to do so. Many keto'ers loooooove Quest bars. They do taste good. But my blood sugar spokes on them more than on foods I make myself. So I just stay away. It shouldn't hurt to try.

MFP Forum functionality sucks. Knit's suggestion of e-mailing the link works, or you can bookmark this page since the URL should take you right to this thread. If you're organized (I'm not), you could create a bookmark category for MFP Forum Links and anything you want to save put in there.

Maybe carry the liquid glucose with you like normal to have just in case, but bring a snack of almonds or whatever low carb thing you'd like and see how you do with that. By all means use the glucose if needed but it sounds like you've come a long way since the last bout with hypoglycemia so it could be worth a try…

I have subtracted fiber from carbs for the last 2 years. I have no intention of changing that and see no reason to. In other forums that I participated in before I found the MFP low carber areas, Net Carbs was the only way anyone ever talked. It wasn't until I joined MFP that I ever saw anyone say that they counted total…

Some people go by total carbs, I've always gone by net carbs and been totally happy (and always in ketosis) that way. Some like FIT_Goat have tons of success without veggies, some find that they fall in love with all kinds of green veggies with this WOE. I had lots of TMI pooping issues in the past, and Keto didn't fix…

As for the why, hard to say. Have you been craving things that you weren't for awhile? Have you been bored? Maybe make an effort to spice up the menu a bit with some new things? If its cravings, for some dropping the carb count a bit more helps with that if its something you're willing to experiment with. Or, examine what…

I am a strong proponent of the simplest possible answer here. You eat just like you've eaten every day that you were having success on Paleo from March to yesterday. If anything, go out of your way to eat your favorite on-plan Paleo foods. I love a good steak, if I find myself struggling, or if I fall off the wagon and am…

I'm one of the folks who has had nothing but good "side effects" from switching to keto, I can't really speak to your problems specifically, but I hope you're able to sort them out and figure out what works best for you in every way. I know that there are people here who find great success on 100g carbs a day, that's still…

So it does, I didn't realize there was an official designation!

Some folks find it adds extra stress and hurts their resolve and its better for them to ignore the scale. I'm on the "weigh every day" side myself. If I weigh every day I see the fluctations and become comfortable with them and they cease to bother me. If I only weigh once a week, I have no idea if my weight on weigh-in…

Its a mix of completely unintended arrogance(I guess that's the word?) and the fact that most places I interact online are 95%+ folks from North America so I don't think about it. Whoops! So I said I'm from Raleigh, NC, in the US. NC = North Carolina, on the eastern coast of the US, 250ish miles south of Washington, DC.…

I just glance before I flush and make a mental note if its completely clear or unusually dark. I probably don't need to, in the last 20+ months on keto I've never had an issue with hydration, but now its kind of a weird habit just to make sure there's nothing strange in there before I flush ;)

Oh, sorry, I didn't actually answer the original question. If I had side effects from metformin initially they weren't bad enough for me to remember. I took it for a year without issue. My mom is also diabetic and hates it and complains about digestive issues with it.
-
With a 5.9 A1C and near keto (as you described) levels of low carb you definitely don't need metformin. I'd have the same feeling as you in not believing that insulin is an inevitible thing for you someday. I would not be surprised if your next A1C is under 5.0 if you stick with things, without meds, and I would bet any…

I drink anywhere from 70-128oz water a day, plain/filtered, I like it that way. I don't really have a set goal. I have a 30 oz mug I fill up at least 2x a day, sometimes 3, sometimes I grab a bottle of water or two on top of that, especially if I'm going out somewhere. One cup of green tea most days, the occasional…

I usually use Radii. That was taken, as was Radii21 which was my usual fallback, so I just added a 3'rd I. Radii - RAD are my initials and I'm the 2nd (named after an uncle). I came up with it in college when we had to create an ID for the CS department's servers. As a math nerd at an engineering school I thought the fact…

Mindfulness does seem like its become a buzzword, especially in the business world, but it seems like there is a pretty huge gap between something with an agenda or something pitched as a quick fix "anti-stress pill" and going all in on spirituality and Buddhism. I fall somewhere in that gap. I don't see any quick fixes…

I shop at BJ's, a warehouse store (similar to costco/sam's club), so I get all of my meat in bulk there. For cost in general keep in mind that on low carb the cheaper cuts of meat are often the best. Chicken Thighs with the skin on are cheaper than boneless skinless breasts by a lot, and are much better for low carbers.…

http://themindfulnesssummit.com/ Free resources daily for the month of October with a lot of big name speakers in the Mindfulness world. It looks like there are a decent mix of topics just looking through the speaker list between theory talk or science talk and specific talk about practices/guided meditations etc.
