Running outdoors is another ball of wax. I hate...HATE treadmills. If your race is outdoors I'd strongly recommend doing your running/training outdoors (whenever it is possible for you, that is...I realize if it's dark out the gym sometimes is the only option). I personally enjoy running outside more. What I'd do is try…

I started at barely running a mile without stopping last year...doing a half marathon this morning. GOOD SHOES. Don't skip. I'm not talking Nikes. If you are looking to really make this something that is a part of your life, I strongly recommend getting fitted with good insoles and good shoes. I skimp elsewhere (clothes,…

And typically when I get up on a usual running day, I have my coffee and something to eat...usually I'm able to "go" within the hour...I get most of it out but sometimes feel the need to go mid run once I get out the door. That's what I'm nervous about-but as many of you said, I have my stuff already (bib on my shirt…

It's all about perspective. A year ago today I would have considered 1 mile to be long because I wasn't as into running back then. Now an average run for me is 7-9 miles longer 10-12. First half this weekend!

Pumpkin pie with maple whiskey whipped cream.

1.) (somewhat dark comedy-but very good for this time of year...kinda girly) "Pieces of April"...bring a box of tissues. 2.) Love, Actually

Good advice-I'm doing my first half a week from today and have in the back of my mind "well...if I can do this...why not go for a full next year?" I'm giving myself plenty of time to work up to it...not necessarily train for it, but to gradually build mileage.
-
Yep! And I was able to run 12.1 miles too! Signed up for my first half marathon a week from today!

Fortunately, after some trial and error, I think I've more or less got it down as far as maintaining safe blood glucose during a run. I know when to eat and fuel and have been able to maintain my sugar between 150-80 the whole time!

Maine...I've ALWAYS wanted to live there.

Great advice! What I've been using for fuel isn't really the most nutritious food, but it's worked well and I haven't had issues with my tummy or bladder. I'm not one of those people that needs to drink a lot while I run so I figure one of my little bottles that goes with my belt should be fine (I mean that's all I had…

Well and honestly I only use one little water bottle (like I did yesterday on a 12.1 mile run)...Didn't feel terribly thirsty. And the snacks I pack have sodium in them so I'm not really worried. Plus I use diet gatorade so I am getting electrolytes... And If I'm going on a 5k-10k I may or may not even bring the belt-just…

Good point :)

Well and if I wear my fuel belt, it holds two bottles...I usually only use one (only used one on my run yesterday...I'm like a camel-I REALLY don't get dehydrated LoL)

I am so excited-and I NEVER thought I'd say I was excited to run! I will probably use my phone just for the sake of Strava, but not for music...since it's my first race, I want to get the full experience. Can't wait! I usually do half the amount of gatorade powder in water-if only to get the electrolytes...it's diet so…

I do Pilates and Pole dance for my strength training. Both extremely fun/enjoyable and not as boring as weights-I've never been a lifting kind of gal.
-
The other good news is that the elevation gain on this run is like...nothing...not compared to even my standard run-so I can just relax and enjoy. I'm so excited!
-
I have the race map in front of me-looks like a great route-and should be gorgeous-through the streets of the historic downtown part of Annapolis. Colors are gorgeous, historic buildings... I'll be using my phone (in an arm band) to track my run-not for music since so many advise against it-if I did, I'd use one ear bud…
-
A big part of the reason I fuel during runs is not for endurance-I have type I diabetes and I fuel to avoid low blood sugar during the run. I've pretty much got it down to a science as far as keeping my blood sugar between 90-140 during the run...Especially with the extra adrenaline...I think I may have to stick to the…

Running. Especially distance. Even in a single run if you're running far enough (like other exercises) you switch from using sugar/glucose for fuel to using fat.
-
Side note-can I use my phone? I wanted to use Strava and Spotify so I can listen to my tunes.
-
Thanks for the great advice, folks. I can hardly wait. I never thought I'd see the day I was so excited to go RUN! And it's in a gorgeous area at a great time of year...weather should be pretty cool but I run best when I'm cold. YAY!

Running/Jogging. 12.1 miles.

I might be. At least harder than these people. And yes, if you're having a cell phone conversation and are focusing more on that conversation than on people around you or the trail for that matter (zig-zagging to and fro and looking everywhere but around you)...it's inconsiderate and not safe for either party. Good day.

Yes. Not 100% I mean days I run I seem to be SUPER hungry. So if I run 11 miles I usually eat back like 80% of them. I've managed to maintain my weight loss that way, not that I'm looking to lose a bunch.

See this is the issue right here! There are places along this trail where there isn't even grass for me to get over to..there's the street (often busy), trees and a freaking lake... When there is grass there and they're oblivious, I just run on the grass...otherwise I'd wind up in the drink.

This sounds like an amazing idea. Fog horn may work as well.
