My bodymedia is quite accurate (as are many others' here in the MFP community).

It baffles me why anybody would recommend consuming more calories in order to lose weight. Physics, not even once. To anybody that says they just can't seem to lose weight, try going on the "3rd world country diet". Eat a bowl of rice and beans for every meal along with some fruits and veggies, including root veggies like…

This is going to sound brash... Minnesota Starvation Experiment, done by Dr. Ancel Keys at the University of Minnesota. Participants were put on a very low calorie diet for a year. Guess what happened? They all lost weight - a ton of weight. Granted, they went crazy and their metabolisms dropped, but they still dropped the…

i"m going to go against the grain with the fiber advice. I read a book called "Fiber Menace", and altered my diet based on its' recommendations, and it was one of the best things I've done to keep myself very regular, with no strain. In the book, the doctor says that going #2 should be as easy as peeing, with no straining…

I can't stand salad, and most veggies for that matter. Instead, I take all the veggies that I'd normally put into a salad, and I run it through my juicer. It makes about 2 glasses of juice. I slam em down, done in bout 30 seconds. Ain't no way I'm eating rabbit food, it's just blech!

My wife invented something in college that she calls a "Super Sandwich". Crack an egg into a small ramekin, no need to scramble it. Nuke it for 1 minute, along with a slice of deli ham. Toast 2 slices of bread. On one slice of bread, spread some butter. On other slice, spread some cream cheese. Put the egg on the bread,…

Whole foods in general are hard to overeat. I can pile my plate full of meat, potatoes, beans, etc., and at some point, I will be sufficiently stuffed for freakin hours. Eventually, you'll figure out which foods completely satiate you, super fill you up without causing you to be comatose and provide tons of energy. For me,…

As as 80s kid (born in late 70s), I'd say that many of these applied to my family as well. Except for my dad, we were all toothpicks. We ate a high-carb diet (as carbs were incredibly cheap). Tons of beans, soups, chile, pasta, casseroles, etc. Ground beef was a staple, but other forms of protein were out. We always had…

Why do people care so much about what I eat (or do not eat)?

I find it odd that people have no issues with eating the muscle tissue of a cow, yet suddenly there are issues with its' milk? Please. It's like people have turned their dietary preferences into some exclusive religion. There's a joke going around ... How do you know if somebody is a <insert various food disorder/diet…

Look at this way: Why do we get fat? We get fat because our bodies are storing excess energy (kind of like a gas tank on a car) for future times of famine. Well, when famine comes, guess what our bodies run off of? All that stored excess energy! The only problem is that now, there's never a famine. Ever. The US alone…

Saying a calorie isn't a calorie is just like saying a pound isn't a pound. YES IT IS! A calorie is a unit of measurement - nothing more, nothing less. Specifically, a calorie is the amount of energy required to heat 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

I buy a type of margarine that's a blend of olive oil and flaxseed oil. I use it for my toast and baguettes. I use butter for cooking. I think people get too anal about their food. Imagine this ... humans are the only species that apparently have no idea what they're supposed to eat. I think of it this way ... it's not…

LOL, this is so true. I live in Costa Rica, and I hate wearing shoes, and everytime I go to a ticos house, they act like I'm crazy. And when they comment how dirty the bottom of my feet are, I smile and say ... they were clean when I left home, if they're dirty, it's because your floor is dirty. :)

It's highly unlikely that anybody is in starvation mode, as it's not going to happen as long as your body has excess body fat (meaning that if you're over 4-5% body fat, you will not enter starvation mode). This was proven back in the 1940's by Dr. Ancel Keys with the Minnesota Starvation Experiment at the University of…
