My wife and I took an easy spin around the neighborhood on our bikes this morning before I returned the rental bike. It was more of a sight-seeing trip than exercise. I got in some laps at the outdoor pool after lunch. After warm up laps, it was a 12 x 100 set on 10-15 second recovery.

Haha! We were smiling because he was wearing black knee high compression socks! Last time my brother in law saw him, Joe was wearing flesh colored ones. :)

Went out for a tempo ride this morning. I rode a similar route to my last longer effort, to take advantage of ocean views on Jupiter Island and avoid traffic as much as possible. My first 30 miles were in the “sweet spot/tempo” output at a 165w/17.6mph average. The tempo pace was interrupted after that due to a bridge…

Did an outdoor pool swim yesterday focused on form. Started with some warmup drills (kick, pull) then 10 easy paced 100's plus cool down. 1600yds total. I don't have much endurance yet, but there is enough time to build it before my first race in June. Recovery paced ride this morning, 21 miles at a 16mph pace. Florida is…

Oh yeah, swimming with fins and a snorkel is great. I often use fins and snorkel during drill sets. Fins to work on my (lousy) kick, such as during a 6/1/6 or 6/3/6 drils, and a snorkel when I'm working on the reach, catch and pull phases of my freestyle stroke. I occasionally use fins during long "recovery style" swims in…

My wife and I are spending two weeks in Florida, so I’m getting a chance to do some outdoor training. Got in a short bike and swim yesterday, then a longer bike ride today. Started in Jupiter heading north onto Jupiter Island. Enjoyed the beautiful shaded route and occasional glimpses of some of the multi million dollar…

2000 yards is a nice swim! To me, the bolded comment from @swimmom is the key. Endurance swimming is ALL about form and breath control. For freestyle work without a snorkel, many swimmers use a mantra to help establish and maintain a rhythm. Some also use a metronome/ear buds to provide a regular cadence that makes it…

Pool swim today. 1800 yds done as 600 warm up (200yds each:swim/kick/pull) then 200yds with w/pool toys: fins, snorkel, hand paddles. Main set was a touch of endurance work (1000 yds), done as a ladder of 100, 200, 400, 200, 100 on 10 sec recovery. I'll need to build in some endurance sessions weekly. Though I'm still…

Three of us did an easy paced trail run today through the 2" of fresh snow. Temps were in the high 30s with no wind, so it was very nice in the woods. We ran most of the route, walking up the steep or rocky stretches, covering just over four miles in 58 minutes. Winter is coming back to Ct this week, so I'll get in some…

First day back with my trainer yesterday. Balance work on BOSU (kneeling curl&press, rear foot elevated split squats, etc.) plus kettlebell RDLs and farmer's carries with modest weight. We did some 30 second rounds on the assault bike between sets. Felt good to be back there. This morning I got out for another easy run. It…

@nossmf Your background is somewhat similar to mine, in that your high school age fitness "took a break" for a time as an adult, then returned thanks to lifting. When I regained fitness, I learned to enjoy lifting via help of a trainer. My trainer was also a private running coach, so it was only a matter of time before he…

Did an easy swim workout just to get back in the pool to see how the stretching and reaching of a crawl stroke would feel. I was a bit tight, but not sore. It was a very easy paced 1000 yd swim. Back to see my trainer tomorrow.

Thanks! and yes it does.

Thanks, @Mike - I had been in a funk lately, so the doctor's words were very timely. And today's ride reminded me how much I enjoy doing the work needed to keep up with my tri club friends.

I had my Day 10 post op visit to the surgeon this morning. Needed all of 5 minutes. He said I'm clear to resume all activities. Just to be sure, I asked specifically about swim/bike/run/deadlifts/squats. His answer: "Yes to all of it. Picking something up won't hurt you. Get back at it, just don't go super heavy the first…

I did a very modest run/walk session for 40 minutes today. Did a 3 min run/1 min walk for 40 minutes at a very slow pace to be sure I stayed pain free. I only went 3.5miles. While my run fitness is lousy now, at least I'm able to get back at it. I plan to do 3 easy runs this week to supplement the bike work. I'll get some…

Uh oh, @nossmf, this is the first sign that you are approaching the slippery slope leading to cardio bunny status! It's not too late though, since early diagnosis is the key to managing the disease. So as long as you don't start buying skin tight brightly colored Lycra workout clothes, or tracking your workouts on social…

I joined our tri club group ride on Zwift last night. We had a good sized group (about 10) which made it a lot more fun. The banter and race planning chats (via Discord) really helped take our minds off the hill suffering, lol. Ended up doing just over 20 miles during the hour session at a 158W average. Nothing…

Recovered from a sinus infection and managed to get in some easy work this week. Yesterday, I did a 30 minute run/walk effort done as 2 min run/1 min walk just to get some movement in. Gym session this morning was two different circuits of core movements, a few of which were modified to avoid aggravating the hernia issue.…

45 minutes with my trainer this morning. Worked quite a bit on swimming muscles with lat pull downs, core strength movements, dumbbell pullovers while lying on BOSU, etc. Tonight was our weekly tri club ride on Zwift. Half dozen of us rode for an hour and chatted via Discord, which helped take my mind of those d*mned…

Trying to keep some momentum going this week. Got in a short "drills focused" lap swim yesterday (1700 yds) and did some foam rolling. This morning, I joined a short, social paced group ride on Zwift. 40 minutes at a 130W ave which was just enough to raise HR a bit. I'm still amazed at the number of riders on Zwift at all…

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. I met with the surgeon yesterday. Turns out I have both right and left side hernia issues, though the left side perforation is very small and doesn't cause any pain. The surgeon said no restrictions in activity before surgery, so I'll simply stay aware of any discomfort and adjust…

I've done some easy lap swimming, plus a trainer ride and some walking over the last few days. The CT scan on Thursday confirmed that I have a hernia that needs to be addressed. I have an appointment with the surgeon this afternoon, hoping we can get this scheduled and done quickly. I'm determined not to let this injury…

Thanks, @Ann, Thanks, @AnnPT77, I appreciate the note. I'm scheduled for a CT scan this week, since the ultrasound results were inconclusive. I was able to hit the lap pool last week without pain and did an easy hour on Zwift, so I'm not completely sidelined. With that said, I'd like to get this figured out before a trip…

Just checking back in after a few weeks of doing no real exercise. During the holiday week, I had decided to give myself a few more weeks off, so I could get out duck and goose hunting with my dog. I did that, but got injured in the process, since I had to drag a sled full of heavy gear back and forth over muddy ground,…

This morning's trainer session was based on 10 min blocks of 40 seconds of work, 20 second recovery, alternating between two movements AMRAP. We did four rounds, so eight movements total (resistance band curls, mountain climbers w/hands on a ball, dynamax crunches, TRX skull crushers, sandbag squats, hamstring curls on…

drmwc- What a great trip that must have been! Love the underwater video. After a few days off, I'll resume with an easy run today, then return to trainer sessions on Thursday morning. The slippery slope of laziness often hits me over the holidays, so I signed up for an indoor bike trainer session that starts in mid…

Thanks! It's much better.

I must have tweaked my tight left shoulder while doing stretches on the TRX Thursday. It was inflamed yesterday, even after a massage. The pain actually woke me overnight and I needed to take ibuprofen and then ice it at 3am in order to get back to sleep. When I woke up this morning, my wife had already texted an…

After a busy fall at the gym, I've been completely away from formal workouts for almost two weeks, mostly due to a hunting trip with my son. I'm still a bit tired from the long days afield, spotty sleep and weather delay on the return flight, so this morning's trainer session was welcome surprise: 45 minutes of guided foam…
