@drmwc - sorry to hear of your Dad’s illness. Training is over. IM Chattanooga race course is beautiful. Today I’ll see how much I have in the tank. Going to be a great day no matter the race result.

Exactly.

Muscle tension intervals on the bike trainer today as part of a short endurance ride. 1:18:00 total ride time included two 10min endurance paced blocks and 8 x4 minutes at sweet spot power output and low cadence. Purpose is to simulate IM bike course. After 3 months of base work and 24 weeks of a race build, this was my…

For some of us, add swim and run, lol.

63yr old from Connecticut here. Most of my riding is done on a triathlon bike, though I enjoy doing social rides on my roadie or hybrid when I'm not training. I also ride indoors in the winter.

@AnnPT77 - "My tongue in cheek" comment should have been noted with a ;) That said, it looks very cool with the glowsticks, etc. As a recovering waterfowl hunter, I've done my share of predawn and post sunset boating. Around here (northeast US) I think the rules apply to power boats only, but I've not checked for larger…

Last swim before leaving for Chattanooga on Wednesday. Swim was a race simulation practice. 10 minute easy swim to warm up, then a pre-main set: 30 strokes smooth/30 strong, then 30/25, 30/20; 30/15; 30/10; 30/5; Main set was 3 x 8 minute rounds with 2 minute recovery: 100 strokes strong, 25 smooth; repeat sequence for 8…

@wunderkindking - Cool picture. That SUP was at capacity! @AnnPT77 - I'll bet moving the barge was a lot of work, and I'm guessing the lighting might not have met Coast Guard regulations. Looks like fun though!

I sometimes struggle in my training if I don't have a goal. As others have said, signing up for a race would give you a reason to run (which seems to be lacking at the moment). The other good suggestion made above is to find a running partner or group. Then, you will start to get the social benefits of group running and…

Did an easier bike ride this morning. Tapering plan called for 2:20:00 at a steady aerobic pace. Five of us rode a scenic, shorter and flatter route, covering 41miles. With only 1660ft of climbing, the 16mph pace turned it into a fun social ride. Will get in an open water swim tomorrow morning before work.

Tapering is underway. Just an easy 60 minute trail run today, about 5 hilly miles. Left hip felt fine. Now I'm tracking my friend and training partner as she races Ironman Maryland today, her first full distance IM. Following the live feed is both exciting as well as making me a bit nervous.

Wow. That's quite a session!

Quick open water swim before work. Focused on maintaining swim form and breathing cadence. Covered 2100 yds at my easy "race pace: of 2:15/100yds. This is fairly slow, since the goal is to exit the swim feeling great as I start the bike split.

Followed MD's orders and gave the legs another day off from running. Picked up my bike from the fitter, who gave it a pre race once over, and then I headed off for 90 minutes of deep tissue work and assisted stretching. Looking forward to an open water swim before work tomorrow. Ten days to race day.

I"ve had good luck with Garmin chest straps, but moved to the Wahoo Tickr and love it. Easy to pair, rock solid and no issues w/chest strap connections. To eliminate chance of irritation due to the strap rubbing, I just apply a bit of aquaphor, body glide or chamois butter. No irritation, even after 7-8hours.

Fingers crossed for you. Several people I know have gotten PRP (plasma rich platelet) injections that have delivered significant longer term relief from arthritis related knee and toe pain.

Oh yes, I quickly realized that falling is not a matter of "if" but "when" during cycling and trail running. Its ok though, since it has happened so frequently to folks in our running/cycling group that we hardly even take notice these days. :D

Conditions for today's OWS were much better than Sunday. Lake was fairly calm and very comfortable in a sleeveless wetsuit. One of my training partners is leaving for IM Maryland this afternoon and she invited me to join her this morning. She's a great swimmer, so I just tried to stay on her feet and draft behind her as…

Quick 45 minute trainer ride this morning. This afternoon, I dropped my bike off for a pre-race checkup and then visited the chiropractor to get a diagnosis of my hip pain. Good news is that its only a strain. I felt quite a bit of relief after he worked on me. Will give it a few days of only easy wetsuit swims (not much…

Nice work. Looks like a scenic ride!

I'm laughing to myself as I read the injury posts. NOT because any of the injuries posted are funny, but rather that this thread helped me recall the long list of bumps and bruises I've sustained over the years. Trail running and cycling have been the primary culprits. Whether tripping over roots or forgetting to unclip at…

skipped the optional recovery ride today to give my cranky hip a 24hr break. Will ride the trainer tomorrow am before seeing the chiropractor. Assuming I get the ok, may try to get in the long swim after work.
-
Ouch is right! Been there myself. Equally fun is chafing from loose shorts worn during a long bike ride, especially with no aquaphor or chamois butter applied. That leads to a very memorable shower.

@Luv2eatSweets - I'll be 64 in November and no, I don't think my body is "over it" yet. And it certainly sounds as if you are maintaining a fairly high volume of exercise. As several others have mentioned, being smart about rest and recovery is the key to avoiding injury. I'd say the "mixed messages" you refer to are more…

Struggled today. Was supposed to do my 2.4mile open water swim. When I got to the pond, it was very windy and the water was rough. I jumped in and started, but after 700 yards of being tossed around, I decided to quit, rather than spending 2 hours fighting the waves. I really wanted to have the long swim be a confidence…

Once exposed to the benefits of power based training, there's no turning back. ;)

Went out for the last long ride before beginning to taper. Rode with another IM Chat friend and we picked up her husband part way through the ride. We did a lot of climbing on the way out (Garmin said 20k elevation, lol!! it was probably 4k) and we took more breaks than normal, since the climbing was tough for our third…

@Ann - This is a frequent source of concern among my crowd. We are blessed with beautiful places to ride, but also a large number of people on the roads and trails. Unfortunately, I've known 3 cyclists who have been killed while riding their bikes. These folks were seasoned cyclists, one of them a cycling/triathlon coach.…

I tweaked my left hip yesterday. Not sure how, since it was a swimming day. Despite icing, its still fairly cranky today, so I changed my easy one hour run into a 40 minute walk/hike on a local trail. I can't afford a nagging injury right now. Will see how it feels after a swim/bike tomorrow.
