  • Sounds like a perfect day! My wife and I try to stop at a farm stand/farmers market at least every other day. There is so much great fresh food to try.
  • Completed a 2500 yard swim workout last night. Focused on putting in a third swim each week to build endurance. This morning I joined a very large group ride designed as a cancer research fund raiser. Three of us decided on the 50 mile route. It was humid, hilly and fun. We didn't push too hard, averaging 16.3pmh. I rode…
  • @Ann - On relay teams, I have not seen any age group splits, simply because relay teams are not always allowed and there are usually only a few teams. This is different than the system used to segment folks racing the full triathlon. In USA Triathlon sanctioned events, everyone races the same course and there are two basic…
  • Ran this morning in humid conditions. 56 minute run including 4 x 6minute aerobic repeats/3min recovery pace. I'm excited about riding my bike as part of a relay team in a local sprint distance triathlon tonight. One of my regular training partners is a very fast swimmer (1:23/100yds at 1.2M distance!) and since our…
  • Agree completely that the fitter's knowledge and your ability to communicate with him/her is key. My fitter uses the GURU fit system and we spent over 3 hours working together during my first fitting. After many of the upfront measurements were made, and being observed while I rode my bike on the trainer, he put me on the…
  • Yep, I'd say it was simply a continuation of his fatigue from poor sleep and maybe too few calories. Next ride will be better!
  • OP, I agree with the responses above, in particular because you describe your husband as feeling "off" right from the start. That suggests to me that he started the ride in a depleted state, perhaps from the prior day's calorie deficit or just starting the ride in a fasted state. In general, riding requires some fuel.…
  • You've received some great guidance from others above. I'll add my two cents regarding your HR questions: 1. Is it normal when starting out? YES! And conditions such as heat/humidity, hills and lingering fatigue can cause this even among seasoned runners. 2. Are there ways to lower HR? Also YES! I agree with the comments…
  • Today's session was the first of 3 scheduled swims this week. 2900 yd mix of endurance and speed. Started with warmup, then drills, then speed set of 10x50s followed by 4 x400 endurance work.
  • Oh boy, that's tough to hear. Hope Toby is recovering well. I"m the same way with our two Labradors. They are highly active field dogs who seem to ignore most dings and scrapes. So when they show pain, I really worry. BTW: Purewave Gen II arrived this week. So far, very happy with it, though I may have to negotiate with my…
  • First week of remaining IM build started today. 61 minute trainer ride, with main set being 3x12 minutes at Sweet Spot output (190w) w/1min recovery. 45 minute minimum form pace run on schedule for tonight. Done by focusing on run posture & cadence while maintaining slowest possible pace. Intent is to build muscle…
  • I went in a slightly different direction at the start. Coughed up the cash for a professional bike fit from a guy who makes his living as a fitter first. He fit me on a GURU system to get numbers for a road bike. He then took my existing Cannondale roadie and fit it to those numbers. He also did a fit in my triathlon…
  • Recovery paced swim and run today after yesterday's hard bike/run. 1950 yd open water swim in the am. Lake was the perfect temp, with almost no one there except a few triathlon swimmers. Took it easy and enjoyed the swim under ideal conditions. 1:35:00 trail run this afternoon. Knew I'd be carrying lots of fatigue from…
  • Had a great time this morning on a beautiful, yet very hilly bike ride along the lower Ct River. Plan called for 3.5 hr ride and a 30 minute run. Completed that task. 50miles at a 15mph pace, then an easy 3 mile run. My training partner and I joined a very strong road cyclist to ride one of his hilly routes. This ride was…
  • Yes! Me too. A bit more work to go on the weight.
  • THIS. IMHO, knowing dozens of people who are very fit through either gym work and/or endurance training, the common denominator is ALWAYS that they enjoy the process and the improved physique is a happy by-product of that process. For these folks, it has become a habit and part of their identity. Motivation comes and goes,…
  • Bike trainer ride today. 1:04:00 Started with warmup cadences and power outputs, then 3 rounds of descending cadence ladders while holding 170W output. All done at 170W: 2min@ 65-60rpm, 1:30@ 60-65, 1:00 @ 55-60, 1:30 @ 60-65, 2min @ 65-70, then 4 min at higher cadence recovery. Hilly ride (3:30:00) and short brick…
  • Ordered the PureWave GEN II. Looking forward to getting it next week.
  • This is timely for me. I've balked at spending $1200 on a pair of Normatec boots or $500 on a Theragun, but need something beyond a foam roller and lacrosse ball to use in between monthly deep tissue massage sessions.
  • I'm currently training for Ironman Chattanooga in Sept. Temps on race day average in the mid to high 80's with 70% humidity. Temps in the 90's are fairly common. With that info, most of us are doing our long bike and run sessions in the heat to prepare for race day conditions. Beyond reducing your pace while in the heat,…
  • Your bike sounds very cool. My bike has a two toned grey frame with black tape, so orange accents would be quite an upgrade. :)
  • Back from vacation and into the lap pool. 2600yd swim today, starting with drills, then a main set of 5x400 @ just above race pace using a pull buoy to simulate a wetsuit swim. Bike trainer work resumes tomorrow.
  • @MikePfirman - This paragraph is THE ANSWER for 99% of us. It's incredibly simple to say, but often very difficult for many people to execute over the long term. That is why I believe that those who succeed in achieving long term fitness are the people who have made it a habit. For those folks, there's no thinking…
  • @AnnPt77, according to Garmin, we're the same age. :)
  • Love my ISM saddle! I've also come to really enjoy the Di2 setup that came on my bike. As far as upgrades, adding power has delivered the most significant benefit in helping me improve my performance. (garmin vector pedals)
  • Took an early ride this morning in cool conditions. It was an easy paced (Zone 2) 61 miler done in 3:49:00. (15.8mph) During a porta potty stop, we met these two very patriotic runners, so my riding partner asked them to step in for a July 4th photo. :)
  • Just a walk today after the drive home from vacation. We're heading back out tomorrow afternoon for another few days away, but I will join a few friends for a ride in the morning. Mapped out a 60 mile route that should be fun. After this week, I'll start a focused ironman build. Twelve weeks to race day.
  • Getting some training sessions in while on vacation. Southern end of Long Beach island is a flat 20 mile stretch of barrier beach with some nice riding and running options. Enjoyed a nice steady ride this morning covering 36.8 miles in just over 2 hrs, a 17.7mph ave pace. Pushed into the steady breeze on the way out while…
