  • Only a bit of jump rope yesterday, but a friend and I got out to our favorite lake for an open water swim this morning. There were a couple fishing boats, a few paddlers, plus the boy scout summer camp crew around, so we weren't alone. Water temp was slightly cooler, but still warm enough for me to go with only the SIM…
  • Not much exercise the last two days due to a three hour drive home on Sunday and my wife having back surgery yesterday. The good news is that the surgery relieved significant nerve pain that plagued her for months and had become almost unbearable recently. Now we work on her rehab so she can rejoin the cycling group on her…
  • Traveling to an out of state wedding, but I was able to get a run in this morning. Ran 4.5 hilly miles at a relaxed pace.
  • My brother and sister in law bought e-bikes and love them. They are both overweight with little cycling experience. They love the e-bikes as it lets them get some exercise without being overwhelmed by hills or distance. They are using the bikes as a way to become active. With that said, the e-bikes are significantly…
  • Finally got a chance to do an open water swim at my favorite lake today. The morning was cool, around 58 degrees when we started. I toyed with wearing a sleeveless wetsuit, but decided to just wear the SIM shorts. It was the right call, since the water was much warmer than the air. No boat traffic, no choppy waves, just…
  • If I’m thinking of HIIT workouts, two descriptions seem to cover it for me. The first is “Going to Breathless” during a set of sprint intervals on the bike, and the second one describing a Tabata workout as “the longest four minutes of your life”. The classic Tabata protocol is eight rounds of 20 seconds at max output with…
  • Recognizing that many/most don’t know or care about the metrics and details that help define “low, medium, high” related to intensity, understanding those differences becomes helpful (and important) when performance improvements are a primary goal. In those situations, pacing discussions that speak in concrete terms…
  • Slow recovery paced run. I'm still carrying fatigue from yesterday's bike as well as a poor night's sleep. Just did a 3 min run/1min walk for 40 minutes on a local bike path.
  • I realize this discussion is focused around doing intervals as a way to reduce boredom and increase calorie expenditure for cardio work done in the gym. With that said, I'd add that for those who are looking to remain highly active into the late stages of life (I'm 65 now), doing interval type workouts helps us to maintain…
  • I guessed wrong multiple times this week, getting rained out of two open water swim workouts and then rained out of my triathlon relay on Thursday night. :( Today, three of us got out on our bikes early to beat the thunderstorms. Conditions were fairly uncomfortable, mostly due to the 73 degree dew point. We rode a very…
  • I practiced jumping rope a bit yesterday, but that was it. Its been too iify in the evenings to try an open water swim at the lake. Today I'll swim in the morning. We have the last of our local Thursday night sprint distance races set for tonight if the weather allows it. Forecast is for very hot and humid conditions with…
  • Reading your description, I wouldn't call your routine "marginal", it may just be less than you'd like to do. As for the bolded comments: I. I struggle with balancing my food intake, particularly when my training volume drops after race day or in the off season. I consume lots of calories during training and have to work…
  • Now that sounds like an all around win......
  • @PAPYRUS3 - I've described the "build" and "race sharpening" phases of training for long course triathlon (70.3 and 140.6 events). I typically take a 6-8 weeks off season break in the late fall, then resume a modest "base building" phase in January-March. The other comment I'll make is that people don't stick with…
  • Short answer: Foam rolling, yoga, compression gun, deep tissue massage. Context: I have been very active for the last 15 years, with a primary focus on triathlon training and racing. My typical schedule would be to perform 9-10 sessions in 6 days. I worked with a coach for most of this period. I also work with a personal…
  • 5 minutes of rope skipping as a warm up, then an easy paced 40 minute run. It was my first actual "run" since the race on July 9. Hoped for a swim, but thunder clouds stopped me again.
  • Racing season is winding down for me. One short (sprint) distance triathlon remaining, so it's just 3 bikes, 2 runs, 2 swims per week for the next month. No real long sessions since I'm still recovering from a longer race in early July. I'm also starting to jump rope as a supplemental low impact cardio activity. Will…
  • Catching up on lawn mowing and other chores today. Hoped to get in an open water swim, but forecast called for thunderstorms so I stayed home. After a few false starts, I've had a few consecutive days of jumping rope as a supplement to other conditioning. While I"m still an absolute beginner, I'm starting to understand…
  • I live in an area with quite a few cyclists and a bunch of bike shops, many selling high end bikes. One shop has an annual consignment/tent sale. This is a way to find good used bikes, many of very high quality, since many bike junkies trade in one or two year old bikes for the newest models. Years ago, I picked up an…
  • Rode one of my favorite routes today under sunny skies and lower humidity. Four of us did a 55 mile out and back route with a loop at the top. We faced a stiff headwind on the way out, but the air was refreshing for a change. The big rains have left our rivers swollen, so we enjoyed lots of white water viewing for much of…
  • @mtaratoot - You post the best scenery pictures. Paddling and camping in that area must be a great getaway. Back home from a beach camping trip. Rode the bikes both days and did a nice kayaking trip on Long Island Sound yesterday. Got lucky with two sunny days in a row. Rain on us today during the ride home. Tomorrow, I'll…
  • My wife and I joined a friend for a leisurely 20 mile ride through several shoreline towns around our campsite. The ride was mostly shaded, rural roads with almost no traffic. My wife enjoyed it quite a bit, since her e-bike has allowed her to climb hills and enjoy group rides. Tomorrow we plan to do some kayaking .
  • Taking a recovery approach to this week. My wife and I are heading out for a 3 night camping trip at the beach. We're planning to do some cycling and kayaking as well as plenty of hanging around. I'm also going to continue learning to jump rope. That's been a big dose of humility so far, lol.
  • Yesterday's group ride was fun, though much hotter and more humid than I'd like. Rode 9 miles to the start, then the 25 mile course, then after some food/drink, 9 miles home. I started the 25 mile route with my regular group, but after 5 miles I decided that I wasn't up to keeping their pace, and didn't want to work that…
  • Race recovery means that I've done nothing other than mowing the lawn this week. Tomorrow I'll get on the bike again and join a large group ride with a few friends. This is a very social fund raising event. I signed up for the 25 mile route and will get some extra miles by riding to and from home to the starting line. Its…
  • 50meter lanes are nice. Good news is that swim pace seems to respond well to an increase in training.
  • @justanotherjen13 - Welcome! Great decision to start walking. You're on the right track in taking the suggestions offered by two veteran exercisers above. I'll just add that the most important thing you're doing right now is building the habit of exercising. Doesn't matter at all how far you go, how fast you go, or how…
  • @nossmf: IDK, I wouldn't minimize your 5k efforts, the 5k race distance can be incredibly painful, since you're pushing at threshold pace the whole time. That 20 minute stretch is intense suffering, just like a 20 minute threshold test in bike training. Long course racing involves a lower intensity effort that goes on for…
  • Just drove home from Geneva, NY this afternoon after completing IM 70.3 Musselman event on Sunday. Race report follows. Short version: I completed a 70.3 distance triathlon. It hurt. A lot. But I didn't die. Recovery now underway. Pre Race Details: Weather called for rain chances all weekend, with heavy clouds and 70 temps…
  • Good to see you back here, @MikePfirrman. That cyst sounds like it was quite a painful thing. Glad you're on the mend.
