  • I took a very short hike due to the hot humid conditions this morning. Just a chance to get the legs moving without causing any fatigue. This afternoon I finished reviewing my race plan, charged the bike, and began packing my swim, bike and run stuff. The Finger Lakes region of NY is a beautiful area and the course is very…
  • I had a great conditions for my last open water swim before race day. Very warm air temps, water temp in high sixties, so no wetsuit needed. Lake was flat calm with no boats in sight. I planned to do about 2000-2200 yards at a relaxed pace, just to mimic the time I expect to be in the water for the 2100 yard swim on…
  • I'm in the midst of a taper to race day on Sunday. Did an easy 6 mile trail run on Sunday, rest day yesterday, will do 90 easy minutes on the bike today. We are supposed to go to a family picnic at a lake this afternoon, so I may get a swim done. The Sunday forecast for Geneva, NY shows clouds and a high of 78 degrees.…
  • Short bay swim yesterday. Water was warm, so no wetsuit needed. Only went about 1/2mile. Did a bike/run brick today. Rode 18 miles in just under an hour, then a quick change into run gear and back out the door for a slow 25 minute transition run.
  • Windy conditions yesterday, so I had a chance to push watts against a headwind during the "out" portion of my ride. I held a 190w output at a 15.5-16mph speed for roughly thirty minutes into the wind. It felt like a hill climb. On the return, I really enjoyed the tailwind. My 165w output drove a 21.5-23mph speed as I…
  • Ran yesterday using my typical 4:1 approach. Run blocks at 10:15-10:30 pace, with i minute walking recovery. Heart rate stayed in Zone 2 the entire time. This will be my strategy for the run split in the upcoming race in July. Will put in 90 minutes on the bike today. I may also swim if the bay isn't too rough.
  • Extended family beach vacation this week on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. Started with a bike ride yesterday, will do another today as well as a bay swim or a run. My wife will join me on her e-bike for a few rides. There is minimal traffic on the side roads and a nice coffee shop at the harbor which is fun for a mid…
  • Gotcha, thanks. When I worked with a coach, half the runners used a pod, though I never did. Pace, heart rate and cadence were enough for me. I did occasionally carry my phone in my vest so I could run a metronome app. The “tick..tock” beat played at 180 bpm and I matched my cadence to it. Over time, this promoted more…
  • @mrmota70 - Nice 10k. I noticed your run data showed a 221w average power figure. I'm curious, do you use a foot pod style PM, such as the Stryd wearable? ( www.sigmasports.com) If so, do you find power data helpful for running? I ran yesterday for the first time since my road/sand run during the Cape race. Good news was…
  • A few training partners were off from work yesterday and they asked me to pick a route and lead a 35 mile bike ride. Six of us had a fun ride in great weather. I set a modest pace (16.2mph) that was still enough work, since I was carrying fatigue from Saturday's long ride. Today's session was a lap swim of 1600 uninspired…
  • @Ernest_Nigma, hear you loud and clear. I was in that position this past winter, due to a nagging injury that sidelined me for more than 6 months. It's a slow process when starting back up, but our fitness does come around. With that said, its sometimes very hard not to get wrapped up in comparing our current fitness to…
  • @mtaratoot - That river stretch looks beautiful. Would love to float that with fly rod in hand. :) Weekly long ride today. 48 miles via an out and back route at a 16.2mph ave. Dodged the raindrops.
  • As @Ernest_Nigma mentioned, transition times at the Sprint distance can be the key to your overall age group placement. Every Second Is Precious! There are lots of little things that make a difference: Wetsuit stripped as you run from the swim to T1, Helmet and shades upside down on aerobars for easy placement on head…
  • Nice afternoon to ride my usual weekday loop. Went out for 57 minutes at a 16.2mph moving average. Good to be back in the saddle.
  • @Ann, Agree with your observations. Re: First bolded comment - Yes, we spend quite a lot of time on this to understand what is possible on race day. And this means knowing whats possible in each of the 3 disciplines, given that you ride the bike after a swim, then run after a bike ride. There are also outside conditions…
  • Thanks to all for the kind words. I really enjoy both the challenge and group energy of triathlons. @laurachambers86 - It may seem daunting, but triathlon is very doable if you follow a training plan. The weeks of training build your aerobic and muscular endurance, then race day is simply trusting your training. :)…
  • I completed the Escape The Cape race on Sunday along with a number of friends. This was a fairly large (1000?) race that offered both sprint and Olympic distance options. Six of us raced the Olympic distance and one did the Sprint. The day started with a 3:45 am wake-up, then 4:30 drop off at the Cape May Ferry terminal.…
  • Wildfire smoke has cleared, so we’re a go for tomorrow. Should be fun!
  • Thanks, @laurachambers86. I suspect it will be tough call for the race director, since a race cancellation affects so many people. OTOH, the risk of 1000 athletes being exposed to dangerous particulates in the air during several hours of heavy exertion presents a huge safety issue beyond the "normal" risks inherent in…
  • The wildfire smoke from Canada is affecting the Northeast US in a significant way. We are getting advisories suggesting that people limit outdoor activities. So I skipped my open water swim in favor of a pool session. Nothing too hard on race week. Workout was 600 warmup, then 2 x500yds on 20sec recovery, then 200…
  • @mtaratoot - Wow, what great pictures! Looks like quite adventure. @drmwc - I'm claustrophobic as well, so NO THANK YOU! I really admire your ability to block out fear/anxiety while climbing/caving/diving. I don't know if I could train myself to do that. Probably not. Took an easy spin yesterday with my wife. She rode her…
  • Another Garmin user here. As @Jthanmyfitnesspal said above, the Garmin Fenix series devices do everything most active people want, particularly if you're a serious endurance type. (Lap swim or open water, bike indoor or out, run indoor or out, hike, etc.) Connects to power meter for cycling or running, syncs with Training…
  • Three of us went out for a 70 minute trail run, complete with another trip and fall by me, lol. Soft landing, so no issues. This is a race week, so I'll maintain my normal training routine through Thursday, then head south on Friday.
  • Oly prep ride today. Five of us went out for 26 miles. I must have had too much caffeine this morning, because I came out of the gate a bit hot (21mph) and got scolded by the crew, lol. Then I missed a turn and added a couple miles to the route. It all worked out fine, though, since I cut out the last little section to…
  • Lap pool session at noon today. Usual 600 warmup (swim, kick, pull) then a 2x500yd main set and cool down. 1800 yds in total. Shorter, higher intensity ride is planned for tomorrow to mimic next Sunday's Oly distance bike split.
  • I will get some swelling of the hands and feet if running in hot weather. Guessing its related to my level of dehydration. Like @cwolfman, I'm glad to shed running shoes and switch to flip flops once the run is over.
  • I did a couple of race prep efforts this week. Last night, I rode a sprint distance bike ride (13 miles) at a somewhat brisk pace (16.5), then jumped off the bike, threw on my run gear and was into a 20 minute run with less than 1 minute of transition time. My run pace was nothing special, (10:30/mile) but I always like to…
  • 90 minute trail run yesterday. Really nice day running a woods trail along the river. I must have been daydreaming towards the end, since I tripped on a root and fell, lol. No injuries, just lots of dirt! Trying to decide if I'll swim today, or just be lazy.
  • Five of us decided to ride during midday hours to prep for the warm/hot conditions expected on race days in June. Three of us went 42 miles and the two riders who have a HIM race went 60 miles. This was a basic endurance effort at 16.5 mph. Hard not to love riding on days like today. Next week I’ll ride a shorter but…
  • Just a basic zone 2 run today. 50 minutes following a 4:1 run/walk keeping the HR low. This weekend will be my "high volume" weekend before the race in two weeks. We'll do a longish ride tomorrow, then a long swim/long run on Sunday. Long is a relative term, since no crazy mileage is needed for an Olympic distance event.
