One thing to keep in mind with an HRM... It's not subtracting the normal calories your body would burn just by existing. So let's say I run for 40 minutes and it gives me 350 calories. 40 minutes is .67 hours. My BMR is ~1650. 1650 / 24 hours = 68.75 calories per hour, or 46 calories for those 40 minutes. So when I enter…

I believe the default settings will be 7 days to smooth and 7 days to predict. You can change this by going into your advanced settings. Select the vertical line of three dots on the upper right -> Settings->Advanced preferences: There it has smoothing days and forecast days. Mine was default to 7 and 7 when I installed. I…

Unless you had a DEXA scan before and after...you don't know. Gaining strength is not the same thing as gaining muscle mass. If you are relying on those bio-impedance things, those things are horribly inaccurate.

I have a friend who is a personal trainer. Her husband is always trying to talk her into getting her clients to do yard work for them as workouts :) Our bi-annual Great Yard Cleanup is also occurring about now. Every weekend I think I'm going to die from the yard work, I'm so sore. I walk every day and jog 5 days a week,…

Agree with these folks. I am a fan of 3x a week with a mandatory non-running day in between each running day. After 3 months or when you can run 30 mins/5k continuous (the longer of the two, never less than 3 months) you can add a 4th day. After another 2 months or when you can run 60 minutes continuous (again, the longer,…

I was just thinking about how the concept of will power is a tricky one. It makes us think we have this well of energy we can draw on. That if we don't contain it we are weak and if we succeed we are strong. I think it's better to think about it as someone attacking your fortress. You don't try to defend your fortress with…

Everyone's given really good advice. I'll just add, while we lose weight we're constantly focused on this thing we need to 'fix' and on what is 'wrong' with us. It's hard to change the mindset when you've lost that really, there was nothing wrong with you the whole time. You were strong and capable of great things before,…

5'4" is (in the US) the height of the average woman. So no, you are not stumpy. Recognize that you are being really hard on yourself, and might have a distorted concept of what your body looks like. Sometimes as we lose weight, even though we are getting smaller, because we focus so much on our bodies during the process it…

I disagree with this concept of running as the magic bullet. Yes it burns more than walking, but not by a whole lot. A lot of people find themselves hungrier when they first start running. A lot of people find they retain water when they start something strenuous like running which can in fact make it look like it's…

What does forever mean? 36 lbs in 6 months is pretty amazing progress. As you have less fat to lose, your body can only metabolize so much fat at once. The quicker you lose now, the more muscle mass you will lose.

Maybe you are the type of person that needs to stop weighing every day. Not sure how old you are, but women's hormonal fluctuations will have a big effect on our weight over a month long period. Maybe you should be weighing once a week or ONCE A MONTH. I am serious. A couple days of it not going down? Mine goes up and down…

This. If you aren't using a food scale, you don't know how much you're really eating.
-
This! +Are you weighing yourself at the same time of day in the same clothes? Is it possible you were really dehydrated at your first weigh-in and might be retaining water at your 2nd? I think much as we can have "high" scale weigh-ins that don't reflect our true weight because we are retaining water, we can also have…

Thanks for posting and re-bumping! Miscellaneous thoughts- At the beginning he is talking a bit about his other book he is writing and says (and I am paraphrasing), people know how to lose weight they just don't know how to maintain it. Small quibble I just don't think this is universal. I see this on here sometimes, that…

Well first on him getting home and not doing anything...that's his choice. Plenty of people lose weight with no physical activity. He may not like the same sorts of things you do. Secondly, who buys all the chips/cookies? Who does the shopping? Does he specifically ask for those things? Continue to do the things he asked…

In my state, cyclists are not allowed on the side walk, whether there is a bike lane or not. But in this case, it's a park with a concrete path/sidewalk that goes around it AND a two lane road that goes around it. The only cars on the road are the people coming in and out of the park, so it's not a very busy street by any…

I use shakes for lunch. Soylent or Super Body Fuel, sometimes add protein powder to them. I don't like Slimfast because it has a sh- ton of added sugar.

I hear you, but see the post above as well. One probably shouldn't be working on running all of your 30 minutes faster until you can run 2-3x the distance. The "just run faster" advice seems to imply you can will your way to running faster. If the limit is really 30 minutes and one does not want to increase the incline, it…

I eat dinner pretty much right when I get home. Any reason you are waiting? I am on an earlier work schedule that I was before and now workout after work. That's mostly to avoid the high traffic time of commute, but it does get my home right when I should be making and eating dinner.

Depends where you carry your weight, and what your body fat % is. Even when I was 135 at 5'4" I wasn't wearing a 6. I carry most of my weight in my torso, especially my stomach. Someone with a smaller waist might have a different experience. Also, I suspect my body fat was still kind of on the high end at the time even…

Basically do whatever you want to focus on first... If you are trying to focus on weights / building strength, you need to weight lift first. If you are running and training for a half and working on a speed goal, you need to run first. If you don't have specific goals, it probably doesn't matter at all what order so long…

Yes I have never so strongly considered pilates before now...

Again I disagree with adding speed too soon. The more you run the naturally faster you will get over time. Forcing yourself to run faster is a sure way to burn out or get injured. Increasing the incline is a safe way to add a challenge without risking injury. Honestly, the best way to gain speed is to add distance, and…

On topic: there isn't a substantial difference between walking at different paces as measured over distance. A brisk mile versus a moderately paced mile walked should both burn about the same. Your iPhone probably can tell when you run (I know my Google fit thing can) and will adjust accordingly. Calorie-burn-wise, a mile…

I don't think I'd ever spray a dog on a leash where the owner still had their hand on the leash. It's pretty obvious when a dog is aggressive/not aggressive. Non-aggressive dogs are looking down / looking where they are going. They might start to meander towards you to sniff you but generally keep their heads down and keep…

I prefer to run solo. Most people are automatically better/faster runners than me even if they just started. If these people are at all competitive or sometimes impatient they have a tendency to try to urge me to go faster. This makes me super grumpy and want to slow down/quit. I am sort of reverse-competitive.

I see logging inaccuracies in your diary... 1 medium apple, 1/2 cup of oats, 1/4 cup cranberries...those are things that need to be weighed. Some suspect entries, like some chips in there that say 15 chips but are only 24 calories? Seems unlikely. You aren't actually eating 1200 calories. Your 7 day average is 1594…
