I have the exact same question about my Fitbit and my Garmon. I wonder if I should take off my Fitbit for exercise or if the mfp calculation removes any double counting.

I had a friend that swore by ice chips with a dash of splenda. To me it sounds like more effort than it was worth, but it is probably a little better than eating cotton. But from my expert status on ballet (having watched Black Swan), I am not sure that one should take dietary tips from ballet dancers. :) --Carter

I like the Muscle Milk Light meal replacement shakes. They taste pretty good. I also like the Blender Bottle. This little bottle has a whisk in it that shakes out all the clumps when you mix with water. This helps the flavor a lot in my opinion. --Carter

Working on speedwork is a good start. Part of what can happen when you train for distance running is that you get out of the habit of running fast. So, running sprints can re-train your body on speed.

I actually got in a bit of an argument with my drycleaner the other day over one of these. When I paid, I noticed that my dress shirts were $0.99 while my wife had a few long-sleeve shirts, 100% cotton, collered, essentially a dress shirt, that were almost $3.00. I asked the drycleaner why they were more. He said that the…

It is a frustrating situation on all sides. I understand how frustrating is for a driver to have to slow way down behind a bike. On the other hand, I also know the fear of being a biker and having a Hummer fly past me on my bike so fast and close that I swear I can almost feel the rear-view mirror brushing my ear. The law…

The best exercize is the one that you will actually do 3-4 times per week. Pick something that is fun for you, that you don't dread doing, something that makes you feel good afterward, a sense of accomplishment. Let it be something that raises your heart rate a bit and gets your body in motion. The number one problem is…

I drink diet drinks too. Usually no more than one per day, but I often go days without. I am with the other poster in that I don't really deny myself anything, but I do try to make sure that I eat and drink a lot more stuff that is good for me than not. --Carter

People are very different in their attitudes to money. I have done a few bachelor parties. Some people want to pitch in and some don't. I don't think there is any harm in letting everybody know (attending or not) that you are planning the bachelorette party and want to get an idea how much budget you have to work with.…

I found 78 recipes on www.allrecipes.com (specific link below). I think the good thing about tilapia is that it really takes the taste of whatever you cook it with. So, I would cook it in way that you like. So, for me, I do a few recipes including: blackened, grilled, and marinated in lemon juice. I really think you can do…

Starting at 225, I reached my goal of 180 a month or so ago. I have now dropped a few pounds below that. I am starting to get comments like, "great job on the weight loss, but enough already." Several people now think if I lose more weight I will be too skinny. So, I think people are always going to have an opinion and I…

I have done both pretty extensively. The comparison is an interesting one. Let's use your 1 hour to 1 hour comparison. The real question is the level of effort put into each. Ergo, either could be higher if you spend that hour at a very high intensity. But, let's add that you are wearing a HRM and keeping your heart rate…

The real benefit of the shake weight is that while you burn calories working out, your family burns calories by laughing at you. There really is something in it for everybody. :) --Carter

I always ask them to shave the lunch meet. It comes out all clumpy, but it is much easier to work with for me. --Carter

Congrats!!!! The best thing is that you now have momentum driving you toward your other goals and a proven history of success. Good Times, indeed!!! --Carter

It isn't a fail as long as you keep moving. Part of the challenge of any couch to ? program is that people are in wildly different conditions before they start. So, they OFTEN are not a perfect fit for everybody that starts. I had some real knee problems, for example, that slowed down my training in the beginning for a…

The guy who sold me my bike yesterday was 77 years old and competes in triathlons. They guy looked great, was in great shape, and he rides all the time. I am almost 40 and starting out with a road bike so I think you could definitely start. --Carter

Not an expert, but I might suspect that you are either underestimating your food calories or overestimating your workout calories (or some combination of both). There may, of course, be issues specific to your body and situation that are having this result. I am sure you will get great feedback. One other thing I would…

I suppose you could always bank your work-out calories and drink them on the weekend. However, not to further rain on your parade, but alcohol has another setback in addition to the raw calories and that is that it slows your metabolism. So, there is a compounding negative effect. Good Luck!!! Switching to from beer to…

I think that sometimes this works better in theory than in practice. Meaning, that I have found that eating back about 1/2 of my exercize calories works best for me. This is especially true on days when I run 10-14 miles. I can't even force myself to eat 1700 extra calories. I think you need to find what works for you. The…

You will see a lot of debate on this as people say that lower intensity workouts burn more fat. This is both true and untrue. While it is true that lower intensity workouts burn a higher PERCENTAGE of calories from fats, this doesn't necessarily mean that more fat calories were burned as you can burn more total calories…

Sadly, I think that you do see diminishing results over time as your weight goes down and your fitness level goes up all other factors being equal. While a 50% reduction does seem drastic, I think this is the reason. --Carter

I think you will like the site resources and the community of users. Best of luck as you strive for your goals. --Carter

I actually believe that when it comes to what you put inside your body you have every right to be as selfish as you want. I would eat what works for you and pass on the rest. I wouldn't make a big deal about it or tell him how he has to eat, but I would suggest that you have conviction in your choices for you. Good Luck!…

I would vote for the HRM as this is more calibrated to your age, gender, weight, body type, and activity level rather than on "averages" used by the machines. --Carter

So, that is based on a baseline of 24 hours at 60 minutes per hour = 1,440 minutes x 1.5 = 2,160 calories burned being alive. This makes sense, I suppose, since this is about the amount that MFP tells me to eat if I want to maintain weight. This seems like it would be a nice feature for the HRM to do for you, actually. It…

I think this is more of a novelty. I believe that it essentially takes the calories that you ate THAT DAY and assumes that you will eat the EXACT number of calories per day for 5-weeks and tells you where you would likely end up. I find this to be more of a cautionary feature when I go over, but I largely dismiss it as not…

Awesome. That is a real milestone. After you get to where you can do an "out-the-door" three mile run, you really reach a new level of fitness and are capable of attacking much longer runs. I also think this is when running becomes fun rather than a chore. Congrats!!! and good luck as you continue to run. --Carter

I think there are a bunch of different HRMs that essentially are used for different sports/activities. One big feature is GPS. This allows you to capture mileage for outdoor stuff like running or cycling. THis feature is expensive so if you don't need it you can shave the cost down by buying a HRM without this feature. The…
