  • Some of them are absolutely silly, on either side of the pond. But some also need to be understood, which can take a while. 29, for example, means that tools should be carried in the rider's pockets. Reduces drag and saves on weight. Still silly, but understandable. If you're racing. It's pretty clear that there are a lot…
  • Salt. Chips (the original kind), peanuts, popcorn. I cannot see a movie without a large tub. (Well, I could, but I don't want to. Willpower is everyone's true demon.)
  • Okay, I'll be a contrarian in the room. Learn to tolerate "cardio", however you define the word. Do not give up what you want MOST for what you want NOW (i.e., now you want to NOT DO cardio). It's a problem to limit the exercises you will do. Runners who don't like treadmills or cold weather have an excuse to gain weight…
  • Thanksgiving is also my 60th birthday. I'll start the day with two community runs, a 5 mile with my son and then a 5k with the whole family. After that I'll eat whatever I damn well please. But I'll still log it all. That way I will be "cheating" on my plan, but won't be lying about it.
  • When you have one watch, you know what time it is. When you have two, you're never sure. Using different methods will almost always give different results. The key purpose for measuring bf is to track change over time. Buy a scale that measures bf and use only it (they are pretty inexpensive these days). Measure yourself…
  • I am so sad that your trip was ruined! As a government employee I feel your pain, though from a different perspective. I was thinking how fortunate I was not to have had reservations for those weeks, though since my job involves finance a vacation would have been out of the question. I hope you are making new plans. I've…
  • My trick (which I often forget to do) is to not think about alternatives. When the alarm goes, I say to myself "Don't think! Just get up!" The mind will go through a host of excuses to not get up. Don't allow yourself do think about them. Hmmm. . . Perhaps a note stuck on the alarm would help solve my forgetfulness.

  • There are many falls within the Canyon, but along the popular "corridor" Trail is the Ribbon Falls, on the North Rim side. About 8.5 miles and 4,300 feet down, then (of course) back up. It's one of the most unique falls I've ever seen. You can Google its images, but the real thing is much more beautiful. The Falls has…

  • June 1 107 June 3 20 173 to go. Saw on the back of a jersey: "Do good, Ride hard, Live well."
  • On the plus side I did 107 miles on June 1st (San Diego Century). On the negative I'll be on a Grand Canyon trip for a week this month. 300 miles.
  • 244 miles done. 256 more miles to reach my goal. Stopped by a "Pit Stop" this morning, set up for Bike To Work Day. I passed on the coffee and Cliff Bars. Maybe this afternoon I'll take them up on it. And grab a t-shirt, though since I do it every day I'm not really the target audience. My sister AND 91-year-old dad are…
  • 205 Miles. 295 to go. Don't think I'll make it, but I'm still gonna try. "It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such…
  • Today I did as difficult a ride as I have ever done. 49 miles, with temperatures reaching 95+. Stupid and proud. 182 miles done, 318 miles to go. "Have you pushed yourself to the limit? If not, how do you know you have one?"
  • 15 miles today, 125 for the month.. A quarter of the way to 500. :glasses: "When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking." ~ Sir Arthur…
  • 5/6 and 5/7: Rain in San Diego!! Very unusual. 5/8: 20 miles. Total for May: 110 miles. 390 to go. This is a racer's quote. I realize it doesn't apply within the context of simple health and fitness, but it sticks in my head: "It never gets easier, you just go faster." ~ Greg LeMond
  • I realize I'm on the wrong side of this group for both sex and age, but I'd like to contribute advice. Don't cheat and don't give up! Logging your foods isn't just about measuring weight loss. It's about discovering what you eat, and then why. For example, I'd routinely have a soda and candy in the afternoon. I eventually…
  • 5/1: 20 5/2: 21 5/3: Planned Rest Day 5/4: Did Something Else (7 mile mountain hike with 20 lbs of weights! Doing Grand Canyon in June.) 5/5: 49 90 to date. 410 more miles to reach my May goal. "When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized the Lord doesn't work that way, so I stole one and…
  • Planned rest day today. My total remains at 41 miles. But time for a quote: "Next to a leisurely walk I enjoy a spin on my tandem bicycle. It is splendid to feel the wind blowing in my face and the springy motion of my iron steed. The rapid rush through the air gives me a delicious sense of strength and buoyancy, and the…
  • I get up at 3:10 Tuesdays and Thursdays to spend an hour in the gym. It is so peaceful. (I'm on the train at 5:19.) I'm usually up at 5:00 on Saturday/Sunday. One of my tricks (which I often conveniently forget about) is to say to myself "Stop thinking! Just get up!". We all tend to overanalyze situations too much,…
  • 5/1: 20 5/2: 21 41 Total. 459 miles to go. "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving." ~ Albert Einstein, letter to his son Eduard, 1930
  • 20 miles today! Good start.
  • This post got me looking at the calendar. I'm doing a century on June 1st. 500 miles in May is not impossible! I partially commute by bike, but the distance riden is not hard and fast. (Take a train, get off before my normal stop.) What's the point of having a goal if it's not ambitious? 500 miles it is!
