An easier Grand Canyon Hike through Diet and Exercise
I'm not sure why but I'm hooked on the Grand Canyon. But a year and a half ago I did a four day hike there and embarrassed myself. Slow and out of breath. I did little preparation and weighted 224. I failed in my goal to complete a Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim journey. Well, this past week I successfully crossed that hike off my bucket…

Off-bike exercises for on-bike improvement?
I think lunges have helped me most. Other suggestions?

Indicators of Success
Losing weight is such a slow process we have to take the successes where we find them. Today I tightend my belt to the next hole. Without too much discomfort. "I won't give up what I want MOST for what I want NOW."

Europe/America - Cycling differences
Bike riding through Europe is on my bucket list, though I don't know if I'll ever do it. Perhaps just parts of a TdF route. But I'm curious. For those who have done both, what are the key differences between bike riding in Europe and the USA? The good and the bad?

Motivational Observations for new users of MFP
- Do not give up what you want MOST for what you want NOW. - Thinking about going to the gym burns between 0 and 0 calories. - Do not reward yourself with food. You’re not a dog. - There are days when you won’t exercise; but TODAY is not going to be one of them. - Some quit because of slow progress, never realizing that…

Holding a glass of water to avoid food
I'm hosting an annual New Year's Day brunch, but I've been worrying about the snacks I always end up eating. They are all good (to me), since it's my party. Mindless grazing is a lifelong habit that's proving hard to end. So I'm planning on holding a glass of ice water throughout. Maybe I'll chew some gum too. Anyone got…

The Rules of biking
If you haven't been there yet, go to this site: http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/ Now, granted, these Rules were written for a different breed of cat than those of us on MFP. But they are still fun. My question is simply, which ones are your favorite? I like 6 and 10. 28 is good too.

1200 cal + cal worked off = daily allowance. Wrong?
MFP lets us add the calories we burn to our daily calorie allowance. So if my normal allowance is 1200 and I burn 300 at the gyum, I can consume 1500 calories. But I"ve been told by several people that I should ignore claories burned and limit myself to 1200 calories. My specific problem is that I don't normally burn just…

Words to get you going
I've pulled these motivational sayings from various posters and whatnot. - Do not give up what you want MOST for what you want NOW. - Do not reward yourself with food. You’re not a dog. - There are days when you won’t exercise; but TODAY is not going to be one of them. - It never gets easier. You just work harder. - What…

Coping Strategies
What do you do to avoid or delay eating? I eat when I'm discouraged and I eat to celebrate a success. I'm trying to change that paradigm. So far the only thing that has been consistently successful is to drink water first. But this is boring.

Warning! Holiday Season approaches!
I'm spending this next week focusing on routine. Getting "centered"? When Thanksgiving and the holidays kick in, I want to know what normal is. I'm going have failures; there's just no getting around it. But it'll help to remember what my baseline should be. And it won't hurt to have a successful week going in.

60th Birthday! Turkey Trot! Turkey!
I turn 60 on Thanksgiving! To celebrate I'll run the Oceanside, CA Turkey Trot(s). First is a five mile run, shortly followed by their vastly more popular 5k. I think this is a fine way to defeat any perception that I'm approaching old age. Also, no guilt when I consume large amounts of food later in the day.

July Bike Challenge: Goal (?)
I haven't seen anyone post this for July. Perhaps I missed it. Anyone interested in posting their mileage goals? I think a little background to go with your goals would be nice. General location, other exercise routines, type of bike? I live in Northern San Diego (so I have a choice between coastline or serious hills), do…

Acceptable non-fat loss Percentage
I have been unable to frame this question for a useful Google search. Example of the issue: In a month's time I go from 200 lbs to 192. My body fat percentage goes from 27% to 25%, which equates to 6 lbs of fat (54 lbs to 48 lbs). The result is that 25% of my weight loss is not from fat. Is this a reasonable ratio of fat…
