I have 2 suggestions which have helped me: one is to take a look at a website radiantrecovery.com which is based on books by Kathleen DesMaisons on recovery from sugar addiction. Basically it is a way of eating which teaches you to eat the right amount of protein for your body, complex carbs rather than 'white' ones and to…

I don't use a photo of myself here because I feel that would violate the tradition of anonymity. I have friends from my 'outside' life here who know who I am but they would also know me either in OA or know that I am in OA. I use MFP to help me to stick to my food plan and stay abstinent. I don't consider any discussions…

Thank you for sharing this Laurel it was wonderfl to read it this morning. When I came into OA 2 years ago I asked someone to sponsor me who scared me just a little bit because I knew I needed someone who would be able to see through my "everything is fine" rubbish! She is also someone with oodles of compassion I have…

I love this thread and all the answers so far have meant something to me, so thank you. I have had moments when I have stepped back from MFP for a few days or I have recorded my food in the notes section rather than added up the calories. That has been when my disease has been gettting me into diet head mode and I knew I…

Great topic :) My understanding of the phrase is it is 'We are not a diet and calories club' which is true. I like the OA definition of abstinence and I also like that OA encourages us to find an eating plan which is healthy and is something that will work for us in achieving abstinence. I started in OA by eating '3…

I am not going although I would love to but it's a long way from the UK. Having said that one year I am going to get to it!! I would love to hear all about it thogh when you et back. I also completely identify with your reasons for being here on MFP. For me it reminds me about portion sizes and that I can't be left to my…

Hi there I missed your post at the time and have just seen it. I am 55 and happy to have OA friends here on MFP. Julia

Hi Fran Welcome! My first OA meeting was in November 2011 and it has certainly changed me, on the outside and on the inside. Stick around because as we say 'It works if you work it". Having a supportive group and someone to call every day is wonderful. I find calliing people in programme every day really beneficial.…

I am working on this one too. And I agree with everyting that has been said so far. My default setting is to isolate and I know that that is exactly waht my disease wants me to do. I find it really hard to pick up the phone and call someone even though I have lots of OA numbers in my phone. I like it when people call me! I…

I have For Today and Voices of Recovery on my Kindle and use them every morning for my daily reading. I love that I can pack up my kindle and have my OA with me. I also have 'Seeking the Spiritual Path' which is an OA book on there. You can get the Lifeline sampler book and Overeaters Anonymous ( the brown book) for Kindle…

Thanks for that link, I love listening to OA meetings and podcasts of speakers. The OA LA Intergroup has loads of podcasts on their website too which are free and always give me some inspiration. Thanks for reminder :)

I read somewhere the other day that the person who has been abstinent the longest is the one who was up earliest :) 18 months, one day at a time. Just for today xxx

I am grateful today for a sunny day, some of which I spent in the garden doing some work and just enjoying the warmth. I am off work for a few days and grateful to listen to AA/OA speakers on podcasts/youtube - it's like going to a meeting in my living room. Grateful for OA, abstinence, my sponsor, my family and my HP for…

Hi and thanks for asking :) I feel good this morning. Had a good quiet time before breakfast reading Voices of Recovery and For Today, they start my day well. I forgot when I was planning my food last night that Im going out for lunch today with a colleague/friend so I will have to be concious of having a moderate meal…

I am happy to be friends with anyone here who is in OA. I have been working the steps and abstinent since November 2011 and this is the only time in my life ever where I have lost this much weight and one day at a time can say I have peace of mind with regard to my food. Of course the rest of my life isn't all sunshine and…

I use my journal in the morning to write what is on my mind and to share it with my Higher Power. I usually write anything that occurs to me from my little daily readers For Today and Voices of Recovery. I try and write what I am grateful for every day. I also write down anything that I am worrying about, resentments or…

Before coming to OA I had been told I was glucose intolerant and was on the verge of type 2 diabetes. Despite that and knowing it was killing me I couldnt stop eating my binge foods - all sugar, high fat foods. And if I stopped I couldn't stop from starting again. So coming to OA and hearing about the allergy of the body…

Hi everyone, and welcome if you are new here :) I have been a member of OA since November 2011 in a local UK meeting on Thursday nights. This week we started a new meeting on a Monday morning in a different area of the city. Wonderful to have 2 meetings. Every meeting I learn something, hear something I need to hear, share…

I went to my first meeting 14 months ago. It took me 20 years to get there from first hearing about OA. For whatever reason I just wasn't willing enough before. Maybe I had to get really desperate first. I had read about OA off the website and oredered the 'Big Book" of Alcoholics Anonymous and the OA 12 steps and 12…

Hi from me too. I have been in OA since November 2011 when I joined my local meeting. I use MFP on a daily basis as part of my plan of eating and it has helped me to understand what a 'moderate' portion is much much better. Left to my own devices my portion sizes would be at least twice what they are now, but they I am not…

Yes, yes , yes. For me cutting out sugar especially refined sugar and white carbs is essential. What you are describing is a blood sugar drop. I used to get that around 4pm. Now as long as I stay away from my trigger foods and make sure I balance complex carbs with protein my bs stays stable and the afternoon cravings are…

Oh that is so true for me! I have to hand my life and my will over on a daily basis ( I use the 3rd Step prayer) and often through the day too :) I agree that this OA programme is a blessing and I am so grateful for how it has changed my life. Glad you are here and it is very good to have a place here where people…

thank you so much for this it's brilliant. I am going to steal it and take it to my OA group tonight! love Julia

Hi there, I have been where you are and I know how hellish it feels, sending virtual hugs and warm wishes and to say you are NOT alone with this. That is why we are in OA. Beacuse we are 'powerless over food' and that 'only a Power greater than oirselves can restore us to sanity'. That has been my experience. And having a…

Hi I am glad you are here My defnition of my HP has changed over the ( nearly) a year I've been in OA. I accepted that there was a power greater than myself and the chapter on 'To the Agnostic' in the AA Big Book helped me a lot too. I know people who believe in the power of OA or their group as a power greater than…

I found that making a list of my trigger/binge foods helped - you seem to have a good idea what they are :) They were the first things to go on my abstinent list. The next thing was portions and not eating between planned meals. So my food plan is 3-0-1 ie 3 meals a day with nothing in between ( no food). Some people use a…

Oh wow, congratulations on 10 years. I hope by the grace of God that I will stay around for that long and for the rest of my life. I am coming up to 1 year. I agree with you that HOPE is the key. I have seen some miracles in myself over the last year. I have worked the steps and continue to do so, the compulsione to…
