  • It sounds like you have shinsplints. I used to have problems with this no matter what shoes I used. Now I do stretches/strengthening exercises like this: stand with your toes on the edge of a curb and lift your body up and down. Do it like 30 times before you walk - it worked for me when it seemed like nothing else would!…
  • I've been thinking about doing this. What a great motivator to actually push oneself! I absolutely suck at running though, and summer is a terrible time for me (I must be hot blooded or something). Look, I'm already making excuses and I haven't even committed to anything yet!
  • Hey, that's way more fun than cleaning the litter box, which is my latest snack-prevention technique.
  • I like to put it in broth-based soups - about 1/8 cup dry per bowl you want to make. Quinoa is good stuff - a complete protein!
  • Yes, you are correct. Your BMR is the amount of energy it takes to run your body - pumping blood, breathing, things like that. It's what you'd burn if you laid in bed all day without moving. Going below this number consistently will slow your metabolism and you'll stop losing, so don't do that. The difference between your…

  • Wow Kisha, it sounds like you are having a life-changing moment... Your motivation is inspiring! I so know what you mean about the planning to eat one cookie and the next thing you know, you're 800 cals in the hole. To me, it's such a struggle to find the balance between not denying yourself everything all the time and…

  • I can generally make a guesstimate. My theory is sometimes I'm probably over, sometimes under on what I actually entered, so over the long run it will even out.
  • I discovered that I can cut my sandwiches in half and still feel full if I add a salad, a piece of fruit, and maybe some soy milk or yogurt. I use 1 slice of bread, 2 oz. turkey, 1/2 to 1 oz. cheese, 1/2 tsp. mayo, and mustard. This works out to be less than 300 cals, probably closer to 200 with 1/2 oz. cheese and no mayo.
  • I'd gladly send you the rest just to get it out of the house, but I wouldn't trust myself alone with it on the way to the post office...
  • Thanks for the reassurance! :flowerforyou:
  • Yeah, I've got an extra 1300+ of rhubarb pie to burn... wanna trade?
  • Haha, yeah, I'll gladly share some of those calories with her!
  • I know, I couldn't believe it either!! I kept checking to make sure I'd entered the ingredients right. I had the recipe before I decided I was going to eat some, but didn't find out my boyfriend had more than doubled the recipe for the filling part until I'd eaten two and a half pieces. :grumble:
  •   Homemade rhubarb pie. Sounds healthy, what with all the vegetation in its name. Who knew it has 616 calories per slice?? And before I figured this out, I wound up eating 2.5 pieces of it. I suppose it just takes that much sugar in order to get rhubarb to taste good. Sadly, this isn't really an…
  • Hey, that's awesome! It's not an easy thing to do when having a drink becomes such a routine part of your day. Times when I've cut back on alcohol I've felt much better after a couple weeks - improved mood, more energy, and easier weight loss or maintenance. Good luck to you!!
  • Depression is something I always have to keep in check. Along with sleep, eating right, and being around people enough, exercise is one of the most important factors. I've been on antidepressants for years and done loads of therapy, but without exercise, even these two methods are sometimes not enough to keep the…
  • My understanding is that the sugar in fruits and honey (fructose) is easier on your body (uses less insulin??) than the sugar in candy (sucrose, derived from sugar cane or corn). I don't worry about the sugars in fruits as long as I'm not eating enormous amounts of them. If you stick to around 3 servings spread throughout…

  • What if you stopped agreeing to go to dinner with her? Maybe you could take some cooking classes together and learn how to cook healthy meals. Or ask her to hide the sweets somewhere you won't find them. Have you tried talking to her about how she is affecting you?
  • Oh no! That would do it for anyone. Hope you get to go home soon!
  • Hi. I just have to comment so that I can easily check out this page later under "my topics" to steal all you guys' great ideas about ways to keep things cheap.
  • Ditto on the tracking your feelings, thoughts, and what happened in your day before you started to emotionally overeat. We eat because it distracts us from feeling our feelings we'd rather ignore. The trick to avoiding it is when you get the urge, slow down and think about what's bothering you (or making you happy) and…
  • If you are using a different scale than usual, it is very possible that the scale being off and water weight could account for an extra 5 lbs. Water weight can account for 3 or more lbs of weight change in a day. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
  • Wow, you are amazing!! Way to go!!! :flowerforyou:

  • Wish I could help you... have just discovered my passion for gardening this year. A good year to start that passion, yes, thanks to all this midwest rain you mention!
  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll be looking for clothes to wear starting in September, so I think I'll wait for the end of summer sales - perfect timing :glasses: I'm making a list of all your suggestions to pull out at that time.
  • Wow, thank you for the offer! I'm a size six now (I'm pretty short), otherwise I'd definitely take you up on that. :)
  • Yeah, the application process totally sucks!! You are way ahead of the game though for starting now, even if you're taking summer classes. Not all programs have money to fling at you. In the MSW (social work) program I'm in, the assistantships are only $1,000 per academic year. Something tells me that social work programs…
  • So I'm seeing lots of suggestions for Ann Taylor Loft... I better check that one out. I think my main problem is that I don't enjoy shopping. It's always a conundrum because I like cute clothes but I hate having to shop for them! I'm always wondering why I don't like the clothes I have and then I get to a store and find…
  • Oooh, I love Marhsall's & TJ Maxx!! If only they didn't require so much digging... *sigh* But, I suppose that's why it's so gratifying to find something there! Yeah, and Target... I swear, 50% of my clothes are from there, haha.
  • I'm starting a new career soon and am in need of a new wardrobe. This is exciting too because I like my new size! But I'm having the hardest time figuring out where to get cute, kinda trendy, AFFORDABLE, professional clothes that are late 20's & 30's age appropriate, and do not size as follows: "size 3 = small, size 5 =…
