If it makes you feel any better, I'm guessing, based on what you wrote, that most of your weight gain is water weight. Eating lots of salty foods (buffet, McDonald's) and drinking will definitely cause a body to retain water. Also, it takes about 3,500 extra calories to gain one pound of fat. So if your weight gain of 3.4…

Go for enough calories to meet your BMR. Even if you burned the extra 331 calories through exercise to reach a net of 1200, the effect is the same as if you were not exercising and only eating 1200 -- you'd be taking in less than you're burning and thus your metabolism would slow down to try to make up for it. I hope that…

What is your reason for wanting to switch to soy? I drink light soy milk (70 calories, 2 grams of fat). I don't know that it's any better for you, but I'm a little lactose intolerant so for me it's better than nothing. I have to say, it took me awhile to get used to the taste/texture after drinking milk for so long, but I…

Thanks everyone, I did have a banana. I think you were right - I ate more than I usually would because it was a special occasion, but it wasn't ridiculously overindulgent like it probably would have been

Thanks, that's a really good point!

Maybe make sure you're not going for a calories-per-day number below your BMR. MFP initially gave me a calorie suggestion that was below my BMR. In case you don't know, (sorry if you already do!), your BMR (basal metabolic rate) is the number of calories your body burns just to keep your body running. You can calculate…

Hi. So we're supposed to go meet my family at 11:00 for a "fancy" brunch buffet, and I'm really excited because it sounds delicious, and I've been planning on eating lots of calories there. I wasn't going to eat breakfast so I could have extra room and calories; after all it is brunch. But I just woke up VERY hungry... I…

Haha, love it!! Perfect excuse :)

I get them too, and have found that easing more slowly into jogging if it's been awhile and decreasing my stride during brisk walking helps until my muscles get more used to things. An exercise I've heard of, which I think helped me, is to stand with your toes on the edge of a curb and go up on your toes, then come down…

You can get sparkling mineral waters like Perrier or Gerolsteiner in larger glass bottles. Try a natural foods co-op if you're not finding it at a regular grocery.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed at first, but judging by your history you just gave, you CAN do this!! It's okay to eat bad-for-you foods in moderation. I have been told that as long as you are eating well 90% of the time, you can have whatever you want for the remaining 10%. I interpret this as about 130 calories/day. If…

Hmm, I remember what that's like, losing cravings for junk food... couldn't say that's me right now! All it takes for me to fall off the wagon is one little indulgence and then I'm hooked back on sugar for days or weeks. Social situations when it is appropriate to partake in, like, birthday cake can screw up my whole week.…

Oooh, those are yummy!!!

I saw one a couple of times, and it was tremendously helpful for me. I most appreciated learning how bodies work with regard to sugar, insulin, alcohol, and eating schedules. It helped me to learn how to eat right and how much junk I'm allowed to eat, too. I probably would have kept going, but my insurance didn't cover it…

Hey Zen, You rock for being a mother and going to school at the same time. I can't imagine... I'm in an intense program of study right now too and it's hard enough having a boyfriend... kids would be like 10x more work! Anyway, I feel your pain in that this time of the semester sucks with midterms and all, and trying to…

I'm going to guess that the difference between walking and sexing (yes, I just made that word up) is that walking is a weight-bearing exercise. That is, walking probably burns more calories because your muscles are pushing the entire weight of your body forward - think about the work your legs have to do in pushing against…

I think kJ stands for kilojoules. I don't know how many equal a calorie (a kilocalorie), though.

Ugh, I can relate!! I have a hard time being around tiny friends, too. I wonder if your friends are being insensitive for talking about weight loss like that in front of you if they know you are struggling with it. Have you thought of telling them how it makes you feel to hear them talk about going up to a size 4? I know I…

cooked or uncooked, it has the same mass. Once it's cooked, there is much more volume, so when they say you're eating a cup of popped corn (maybe 1/4 of the bag), it will be lower calories than if you were, for some reason, eating a cup of unpopped kernels (probably more than there are in the bag).

I don't believe the bit about no calories in white rum. If it has alcohol, it has calories. Just because they say something in a commercial doesn't make it true. Also, another point about alcohol's effect on your diet is this: ever noticed you get the munchies during/after drinking? Alcohol causes your blood sugar to dip…

Thanks for everyone's support. I made it through the day consuming a mere 3 cookies. Don't ask how many calories were in those 3 cookies though....

So my house is packed with cookies... mostly girl scout cookies, but some other cookies too that are even worse, if you can imagine that. It is only 8:14 a.m. and already they are on my mind!!! I am working from home today, so escaping is not really an option. My favorite way to procrastinate is to eat. Help?? :frown:

I quit 2 1/4 years ago. I don't recall gaining much weight, but even if you do gain a little weight, trust me, IT IS FAR BETTER THAN SMOKING!!! You will feel so much better, and exercise will be easier. I really like Bob's advice - the extra breathing from exercise really helps replace the feeling of smoking. Some other…

It does matter because when it's cooked, it loses moisture, so that 4 oz. of cooked turkey is going to be more dense nutrient-wise than 4 oz. raw. I would assume that the serving size is referring to raw.

This happens to me when I don't eat enough veggies or complex carbs, esp. fiber. Fat, protein, and fiber make you feel full, so if you eat more fiber, you can still feel full but with less fat & protein. I've heard conflicting information about protein... if you are active, apparently the default protein recommendations on…

Where are people getting these nifty 3D-looking pictures of how their body looks/looked/would look at different weights??

Anyone else??

oh no, that sounds terrible! that is a lot of cast to wear. thanks for the suggestion and the laugh! you just gave me an idea - i am thinking maybe baking soda??
-
okay, so i finally got the exercise thing down and then went and broke my arm! :frown: i've got a cast on it for 4 more weeks. my doc said it's okay for me to exercise in it, but it's already not that pleasant smelling...:ohwell: has anyone else dealt with working out with a cast? what did you do for exercise and how did…
