I'm sad to say that I've been through this too, and I know exactly how you feel! It turns out that food restriction is itself a trigger for binge eating. So it's ultimately a hopeless battle trying to lose weight before getting to the root of what is causing the binging. Read this book, and it will help you decide what to…

Try googling "mankini". Ouch.
-
Thanks Brian. Yeah, I looked into those tri bibs, and funnily enough they don't make them in enormous sizes, go figure. :D
-
Really appreciate the advice, autumnblade and salstg. I'll check out swim outlet and see if there's anything there my size.

Good job selectively quoting my post to remove the part where the authors explained that they controlled for such things.

Congrats on your awesome loss, Jonnythan. But you're missing the point of my post (and of the article my post cites.) Yes, it's possible to lose weight while eating sugar. But that sugar may be wreaking havoc with your arteries, your liver and other organs. That's why the American Heart Association is so concerned about…
-
From the JAMA article: So either: (1) sugar is a causal factor, or (2) cardio-vascular disease causes sugar consumption, or (3) there is some factor not included in the above that causes both. Which do you think is most likely?
-
Umm, wut? They stated the author, the journal and the date of publication. But if that's not enough for you, here is the link: https://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1819573

I just want to say thanks to the many people who have written these thoughtful posts. I'm a long way from maintenance, but I do feel like I need to be thinking about it now so that it isn't an abrupt change. There are a lot of good ideas here, from your hard-won experience.

Second that. My 5-year old boy LOVES Wii Just Dance. In the summer he and I go out bike riding or play soccer, baseball or hoops. All of those are good exercise. And snow shovelling in the winter.
-
That's a wonderful story. Congratulations. Do you have tips on how you have managed to maintain so successfully these last two years?

I have also been diagnosed with a herniated disc. It sounds like yours is worse, but I throw mine out once or twice a year and can barely walk for weeks on end. My physio prescribed exercises, which I'm sure yours did as well. The message was clearly to avoid strenuous exercise until it had healed and until her…

I have a BodyMedia Fit. It does a good job of tracking activity during strength training. It has disadvantages, though too - it isn't terribly comfortable to wear and it requires a monthly subscription.
-
You looked great in the "before" picture, and even better in the after pic! Well done!
-
Ok, so it sounds like JEFIT it is. One their forums they posted that they hope to integrate with MFP some day. I really hate putting in everything twice. I guess logging as general weight training is fine. Thanks everyone!

I follow the school of thought - as recommended by the American Heart Association - that the goal is to keep added sugar to a minimum. The rationale is that fibre mitigates the negative effects of fructose, so fruit is ok, whereas Oreo cookies, not so much. (Everything in moderation, of course.) And it is fructose that's…

I've done hard-core low carb (< 20 g / day), and it worked great, but I unfortunately didn't stick with it. I'm doing a low-ish carb diet now, pretty much avoiding refined carbs but eating anything else. I think if you do Atkins OWL, this is more or less where you wind up anyway. For eating out, most of the time the menu…

Thanks for the tip. Why not, I will try after my back heals... with the smallest weight I can find.

These are big features of our house!!

I appreciate all the good wishes. It sounds like people are really positive about chiropractors. I'm a little ignorant of what they do that my physio won't do, but it sounds like something I should really check out. @Max - the argument I have been given by my physio and my PT is that the core muscles support the lower…
-
Thanks Max. I'm not sure what getting my back popped even means - is that a chiropractic thing? I don't dare do dead lifts :) I think planks may be more my speed. But educate me!
-
Yeah, it's gotta help to drop a few pounds. I had back problems when I was thin as well, but all this weight obviously isn't doing any good.
-
So I live in Canada where it's -100 degrees out and about 60 feet of snow. But if I lived in Texas, I would definitely buy one of these: http://www.elliptigo.com They seem like the coolest thing ever, and a great way to get low-impact exercise outdoors.
-
A recumbent bike trainer might be good until you drop a few more pounds. It's hard to sit on a tiny saddle if you are tipping the scales on the heavy side.
-
I don't see any big red flags in your diary. I even got some good ideas from it - black bean burgers, mmm! Like the others have said, maybe look at how carefully you're measuring. It's easy to be 25% over what you think you're eating.
-
Congrats on the weight you have lost so far, Atkins does allow fruit once you are past the initial two week induction phase, though - maybe you need to look at the book again. If you start eating a lot of carbs, you will gain water weight since carbs cause water retention, But water isn't fat, so this may not be a big…

Sounds like you have a great doctor. You may choose to stick with paleo indefinitely, but if you choose, you should be able to slowly reintroduce some carbs over time while monitoring which forms trigger cravings. Well done so far!
-
Me too! I'm trying to find a practical balance that I can stick to. Do friend if you wish!

It is worth engaging a personal trainer for the first couple of sessions to show you the ropes. Form is very important in weight training. A shocking number of people in the gym have no idea what they are doing.
