My experience has been that Asics, New Balance, and Saucony are best. (unless you're into the whole Vibrams/barefoot running thing, but that's another story.) Personally I haven't liked Nikes for running, but go check out a local running store and have them help you! Most running stores will evaluate your gait and help you…

I think for someone who is "addicted" to sugar, it's good to give it a try for 30 days to live without it. I've done it, and I find my cravings really do subside after the first week or two. Those first two weeks will be tough though. Like someone already mentioned, if you are truly going to give up sugar, you will be…

This will be mine for today: “Bear Complex” One rep= 1. Power Clean 2. Front Squat 3. Push-Press 4. Back Squat 5. Push-Press Do that seven times for one round. Do 5 rounds total working up to your max. This is not for time. You can rest in between rounds. + Row: 500 M Time Trial

I used to more in college. But I was also about 30 lbs heavier then... Alcohol doesn't do much for me, although my husband and I really enjoy wine (which is alcohol... I know, I know ) :p Usually I'm too concerned about being able to get up for the 8:00am workout class on Saturday mornings than to risk having a hangover -…

At Jimmy John's I opt for the avocado spread. Much healthier option!! If you truly want more of a calorie reduction, choose mustard. You can also make a healthier version of your own mayo using something like avocado oil instead of canola oil.

Personally I do Crossfit about 5 times a week. But my husband, who is training for his 4th marathon in May, has started doing Crossfit too - he'll come to class (strength) maybe Tuesdays & Thursdays, and run Monday, Weds, Saturday. I'm not sure of his exact routine, but I know he's been adding in some speed and hill…

Well, I'd like to just say "get stronger and faster at everything." But that's not going to give me a lot to work towards! We do quarterly goals at our box and I'm still working on mine for Q1 of 2012, but here is what I have so far: -Deadlift 235# (currently 215) -Back squat 180# (currently 140) -Snatch 100# (currently 85…

^^^ This. Some people have are able to sleep better, etc. if they eat at different times, but it will not affect your weight loss efforts. And to answer your question, yes, I always refuel after a workout, no matter what time. My body needs it!

I think the incline bench would just add more resistance & distance to the exercise. A swiss ball would provide instability instead of resistance, so it would be slightly different, but I wouldn't think it would make a huge difference.

wow sorry for the triple post... clearly I was having some computer issues

Yes, yes, yes! Avoiding packaged foods has made me feel SO much better. More energy, less bloated, less weighed down. This also means avoiding foods that claim to be "all natural" and "organic" on the label, too - most companies can say whatever whey want on the front of packages! Stick to foods that don't really need…

Everyone else has pretty much driven this point home, but I'll say it again: You most likely need to eat more, and focus on eating whole, nutritious foods. Veggies, lean meats, fruits, healthy fats. Try to avoid foods that come in boxes and packages as much as you can. You will feel so much fuller, I promise!!! Don't give…

Well, I suppose it's not a "buster," but it's really a much better preventative measure than C. There's a lot of research on it. Here's just one example: http://health.usnews.com/health-news/managing-your-healthcare/infectious-diseases/articles/2009/02/23/too-little-vitamin-d-may-mean-more-colds-and-flu

VITAMIN D!!!!! It is the ultimate cold/flu buster, even moreso than vitamin C.

I don't consume any dairy... personal preference though. The only people I know that really drink milk are the ones that are doing GOMAD... a gallon of whole milk per day. Yuck. Helped them get really strong though.

Agreed, it would help if your journal were public so we could see what you are eating! I feel many people a) do not eat enough (1200 calories... I'll never go back to that again) and b) do not eat high quality foods. I have found that simply eating whole, unprocessed foods, and eating more (LOTS) of them, has helped me…

It is most likely muscle, but clearly I don't know you and you workouts so there's no way to tell for sure :) If you think you LOOK better, then that's probably what it is! Check out this article (kind of long, but WORTH IT!!): http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/07/21/meet-staci-your-new-powerlifting-super-hero/

Check all your local supermarkets' sale flyers. Go where the meat is the cheapest. This could vary from week to week, but in general, meat will be your most expensive items (and nuts - they can get pricey too). Costco also has a really good meat selection - if you have the room to store meat in bulk. From there, just…

Trust me, it will NOT be too much if you eat 1700 calories! I am 5'9" and 155 lbs and I eat 1640 on days I don't exercise and close to 2,000 on days I work out. And I am losing weight. You need to trust!!! 1200 calories is too low for most people.

I also do the standard DL from the ground. I'd never even heard of doing one from a rack O.o

I agree with you, the texture of the "quick oats" is disgusting. My husband bought them once by mistake... If you get the Quaker "old fashioned" oats, you don't have to cook them that much longer - I think I put them in for 2:30-3:00. Much better consistency and not much more cooking time. Oh, and you can still probably…

I have a Garmin and I love it! I don't know the exact model offhand, but it's proven to be pretty accurate. The only times I've had major issues with it were during large races in the city of Chicago - there are a couple places where I think there was some interference (because of the buildings, maybe)?? A couple other…

Yes definitely! In college, I gained a lot of weight while in a relationship with a very toxic guy... we drank a LOT together and he always told me he loved my curves, etc... and whenever I would lose weight he would tell me I was getting "too thin." Now I am married to a wonderful man who really puts a priority on fitness…

The difference in your "metabolism" is minimal either way. Here's my thoughts: You can't move the car if you don't have any gas in the tank. Your body needs SOME fuel for you to get the most out of your workout. The people I've seen puke the most in a morning workout are the one's that didn't eat anything. Experiment with…

YES! I also go thru the McDonald's drive thru ONLY for a big DC. It's so lame. I have one sitting next to me. Ugh. And of course, as I drink it, I will dwell on this: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20075358-10391704.html Just one of the studies showing that while it doesn't necessarily make you HUNGRY, it makes you…

Yeah, it's my downfall :( It is soo bad for you, the people at my gym call it "rot-gut." Not to mention it totally tricks your body by giving it something sweet without the calories... making you want to eat more. But alas, I still drink it. In high school I would drink multiple a day (i'm talking 5, 6.... maybe more) and…

Yay! Thanks for posting this. I'm definitely in (obviously...) but don't have 'experience' starting a challenge on here... but I think you just did! I am going Jan 1-30, 1 variety meal per week with 1-2 glasses of wine per week. I just can't not do the variety meal... I've dnoe the paleo challenges before and I fall off…

I've had a problem with turning down food this holiday season... but yesterday I made a hard effort to turn down the crackers, dip, and carrot cake at work. And then someone came around with cookies and I actually said, thanks but no thank you. It felt good. Hopefully I'll continue...
