  • I've read Lamb and It's A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore and loved them both. How is Sacre Bleu?
  • Glad dad is still around. Good idea saving the helmet. Our county in Washington State doesn't require helmets. Can't understand why.
  • Most of my miles are in rural areas of Western Washington where many dogs are not on leashes. I am a regular practitioner of "NO!" and "Bad Dog!". It generally works pretty well. I did have a pair of very hungry looking fighting dogs with metal spiked collars chase me in India once. I realized that I couldn't ride faster…
  • Just started The Ocean at the End of the Lane: A Novel by Neil Gaiman. So far it has been great. I'm very early in the book but it has already started creating a creepy sense of foreboding. Too bad it is so short.
  • One of my favorite authors! I've also enjoyed Anansi Boys and Neverwhere.
  • ^^Nice^^ I get up at 6:30 and ride my bike 30 min (6 miles) to work. Coffee keeps me until 10 am when I eat a breakfast of about 325 calories. Don't think it really matters when you eat. I don't do hunger well so I snack on fruit or sugar free jello when necessary. I've found that a regular eating schedule has helped me…
  • I am a daily commuter and a bicycle touring enthusiast. I'm not sure if cycling is any better or worse than other types of exercise for weight loss. I do know that it is kind to your body and easy on the mind. I've enjoyed riding a bike since I was a kid and nothing has changed. There are few situations that I can't…
  • Good suggestion with the spokes but I have a story about that. Purchased two identical bikes in 1988 for an extended tour. The bike shop gave me 4 extra spokes (I had taken a bicycle maintenance class. One of the best things re biking I've done, btw). I had a place out of the way in my pannier so that is where they stayed…
  • ^^Nicely done^^ Your flavor profiles match my experience. I cook nearly every breakfast and dinner. Lunch is usually a 'Lean Cusine' type microwave concoction. I use a crock pot a couple of times per week for pork roast (Costco's sirloin tip pork roast) or chicken hind quarters (skinless with excess fat removed). The…
  • Here's an idea. I use Wordpress for my blog. I've found a free Wordpress hosting site here: http://www.biz.nf/free-wordpress-hosting.php You can update your blog using the Wordpress app for Android and iPhone. Congratulations on a great planned ride. That is beautiful country (my family is a bit north in Northants). Wish I…
  • Ok. I ride most days to work with weekend trips when I can. I'm in. What do I do now?
  • I use runtastic road bike pro. It automatically syncs with MFP. Has been flawless with the gps tracking. Has some nice features with the ability to do much more than I desire. Simple and effective. I found Endomondo overstated my calorie burn compared to other programs.
  • What a great major! Some of my recent history readings: Agincourt: Henry V and the Battle That Made England by Juliet R.V. Barker. Highly recommended. Of "The Penguin History of Britain" I've read: The Struggle for Mastery by David Carpenter New Worlds, Lost Worlds by Susan Bridgen A Monarchy Transformed by Mark Kishlansky…
  • Some good suggestions so far but haven't seen this one. Don't lock your elbows while riding. Keep them bent and available for absorption of road vibration and shocks. I like the bike fit suggestions. That would be the place to start.
  • Great Book!!! Maugham has such a fluid writing style. He brings characterizations to life for me. I'm currently reading "Alexander the Great" by Robin Lane Fox. Good, if you like history
  • My experience in the UK and Europe is that cyclists have more respect than they do in the States. I give a friendly wave to drivers that wait to pass safely and with added margin. I've found that when I'm geared up for touring I'm usually given more space. When a driver passes closely for no apparent reason I ignore it for…
  • Interesting problem. You are quite young. Your body can handle it. I have the experience of averaging about 300 miles per week for over a year on a fully loaded touring bike. My advice is to rest when you can and don't try to limit calories initially. Your body needs to build muscle to accommodate your increased mileage.…
  • Nice! Wish my town had a bike shop. I took a class many years ago from a guy who had a one man shop in Seattle. Best thing I ever did. I've maintained my bike for about 25,000 miles now. When I told that to a bike mechanic he said, "25,000 miles? You've just about got it broken in." A bicycle will last a long time with a…
  • Just finished a 175 mile three day tour in western Washington State. The bike was originally a Diamondback Apex converted to touring for a round the world tour in 1988/1989. I've got a total of around 25,000 miles on it I would guess. Still going strong!!
  • ^^ Here Here^^ One of my favorite words! Depending on where I'm at with my calorie goal I hit the carrots for their crunch and low caloric impact or an apple for its juicy sweetness. During the evening I'll often eat a single serving 100 cal bag of microwave popcorn.
  • Great Job! If you can survive that you can survive anything. In fact, if you like rain and sub 50 degree weather come on up to western Washington State. That's a typical ride for us!
  • Congratulations! Keep it up. Since we have switched to daylight savings time in Washington State I ride to work most days (6 miles each way) and take a ride at lunch time (another 6 - 12 miles). Hope you enjoy your rides and be safe!
  • ooommmmm ooommmmm ooommmmm
  • Sounds great!! I've done a fair bit of touring including a 14 month trip of over 11,000 miles as well as many shorter trips. I remember the feeling of anticipation in the days prior to my departure. Am I packing the right stuff? Will I be able to make it? What happens if...? They will all be answered in due time. Enjoy the…
  • That's all there is to it.
  • Take a walk with him. Get bicycles and bicycle together. Go bowling. Take up tennis. Get some inline skates.
  • I ride my bike to work in the morning 6 miles, about 225 cal. Then I take a ride at lunch, 6 - 11 miles, another 250+ miles, then ride home after work. End of the day I've burned between 700 and 1,000 cal.
  • ^^Yup^^ and restaurant Chinese food. Takes a couple of days to leach out of me, it seems. Keep doing what your doing and watch your sodium. Over the long run you'll see the results you seek.
  • I'm using runtastic and for my limited needs it works fine. I'm really only looking for a mileage log with calorie counter. I'm not in 'training' for anything so monitoring my times and speeds is not very important. I've loaded Strava on my phone but haven't got it set up yet. I'd like to graduate to a dedicated GPS but…
