Total calories matter, but what you eat also matters. If you are hitting calorie goals but not losing weight, you may be more sensitive to things such as sugar or wheat. I always recommend trying out a week or two of strictly unprocessed foods - lean proteins, fish, eggs, along with plenty of vegetables and some fruits and…

Actually it's not that simple. It's an oversimplification that hasn't worked. People are eating less fat, gym memberships have gone up, total calories consumed have gone down, yet we still have an obesity epidemic and type 2 diabetes is going up by 4% every year. I'd highly recommend checking out 'Fed Up' on NetFlix or…

Ultimately the goal is to find something satisfying that can be sustained in the long term. Some people find preparing 5 to 6 meals throughout the day a lot of work, and eating smaller amounts not all that satisfying. Others find eating only two larger meals a day is less work and more satisfying. Others find that not…

Unfortunately there is no real magic to losing weight and getting healthy. Your best strategy would be to log what you eat to estimate your calories, and stick to real, unprocessed foods without added sugar. Tracking calories gives you a baseline to go from if you are losing, not losing, or gaining and you can make…

Those are pretty amazing results! When it comes to a bulk, cut, or re composition, you really want to stick to one choice. For example, if you are in the gym 6 days a week, you probably would not want to cut because you need a surplus of calories to gain new muscle. Doing all that work and not getting a lot stronger would…

Personally, my goal is always to follow either a paleo-like diet with slightly higher carbohydrates (maybe around 100 per day) for maintenance or lower carbs (25 to 50 per day) for weight loss. I always cut out processed junk foods when possible. I was able to lose 78 lbs in one calendar year from May 2010 to May 2011 and…

Welcome and congrats! How tall are you? I wouldn't normally consider a male at 211 to be obese. Not skinny maybe, but theres lots of males that start out at a higher weight :)

I probably could do a cheat meal once a week, however I find that it just triggers me to want to eat more crappy foods and I mentally berate myself for eating things that will set me back. It's easier for me to set a specific goal - like a 30 day strict challenge - and try to attain that before any kind of cheat meals.…

I'm looking forward to regretting this!

I am on day 1,460 and still going strong! :) Actually I do not always do strict low carb, but I was able to follow a paleo-low carb hybrid and lose 78 pounds over one calendar year (May 2010 to May 2011). It's been four years and I've maintained the loss pretty well. In general I stay away from processed foods. I avoid…

There is very little nutritional value in processed foods, and the companies that make it do not have your health interests in mind. Take a look at a lot of the ingredient lists on packages and your eyes will glaze over. :) There is no one right way to eat, but it does follow common sense to try to eat as cleanly as…

By staying away from processed foods (rice, wheat, corn, anything that comes in a package with ingredients) and keeping carbs relatively low, I was able to lose 78 pounds from May 2010 to May 2011, and around 90 pounds overall. In the four years since, I've altered between Paleo (fruits, veggies, protein, fats), sometimes…

I was able to lose 78 pounds in exactly one year without a gym membership. I am not a big fan of chronic cardio, where you sit on a treadmill or elliptical for 30 minutes. I focused on eating clean and going outside and playing. It didn't really feel like exercise but I enjoyed moving around, especially as I began to lose…

I've never seen a great need to calculate exactly how many carbohydrates I am eating on a given day. I think people who micromanage every single carbohydrate miss the purpose of why keeping sugars low will likely improve health. My advice would be to get rid of processed foods and focus on vegetables to begin with.…

Intermittent fasting is a great tool to help you get the calories you need each day in a condensed window. For me, it helps me feel full towards the evening hours when I would typically feel hungry and want to snack or eat crappy foods. Once I adjusted to not eating breakfast, I am no longer hungry in the morning. I simply…

Sugar and processed junk foods are the cheapest and most prevalent foods out there. Most product manufacturer's could care less about the effects on the health of the people who consume their products. Chronically overeating sugar can and does lead to very serious health issues. The bottom line is there are usually much…
