The phrase that comes to my mind is the adage of "abs are made in the kitchen", the whole idea being that, while both are valuable components, what you eat can have a much larger impact on weight loss than going to the gym. It's remarkably easy for anybody to "undo" the additional burn from a workout with a quick trip to…

It's only as obsessive as you make it, really. It can really be little different than glancing at your speedometer to make sure you're not going too slow or too fast. If you're going to be cool about allowing some wiggle room, it's really not any more of an inconvenience than using the WAG system of determining portion…

This is a big help. It can be quite the eye-opener that, combined with logging your calories, really helps you understand what your actual intake is. But, on the plus side, having that detailed knowledge also gives you the ability to say "I **CAN** have X amount of the food I like, today" instead of the often used tactic…

This is a big element. It's valuable to remember that actors can tie their physique into their livelihood, so not only are they that much more motivated, but those around them, to include their employers, understand and enable it. That doesn't make it impossible for the rest of us. We just need to find ways to do it in…

How long after exercise was it, and how long did it last? Like others have said, it sounds like overexertion. Personally, I find it'll happen to me more often after something where you're constantly moving, like various forms of cardio, as opposed to weight training where (for me) there are rests between sets. Is it…

I think that's in response to the OP saying their pug eats PB by the tubful.

My Shepherd / Malinois mix loves to stand over me when I'm doing sit ups / inverted rows, and when I do push ups, she'll do her best to get under me and then roll over, just in case I feel motivated to rub her belly while I'm down there. And for some strange reason, she will wake up, get up, and walk into the gym whenever…

This is the other big thing for maintenance without insanity. You can have a particular, specific target, but you really want to look at it as a weight range, such as 5 above and below. Not only will that accommodate any temporary fluctuations, but it lets you have a range where, if you're taking corrective actions,…

Same here. When I weigh myself, I usually do so in the morning after I've gone to the bathroom so that the number on my scale is my "empty weight" and not my bodyweight plus the sandwich I had for lunch, the steak I had at dinner, etc. Monday morning is particularly useful for me because I don't tend to eat much on…

That, combined with being dry for a long time, can make what seems like a small amount of alcohol have a disproportionate impact even without weight loss. Many years ago, I worked at one of the Army R&R bases in the middle east, where soldiers would have their first chance to legally drink after what was sometimes 9 months…

Like others have said, it's going to depend on what kind of vacation you're talking about. If you're on land, it's potentially possible to keep better track of your calories thanks to many restaurants having their information available as well as the possibility to buy food in a store and use the nutrition information…

It's good that they'll provide you the data. That will help your calorie counting. But now for my next question: What is the SCHEDULE like? I know some colleges only open their cafeterias for a few hours for each meal. The challenge with that is that you have to fight the urge to possibly eat more than your really need to…
-
The first question that comes to my mind is what kind of meal plan you're on (if any). Cafeterias provide challenges because, unless the school puts out the information, you don't always know how many calories are in the food, so you end up doing more guessing than if you're preparing your own food.

Where does the 20lb goal come from? Is it something you came up with, yourself? Is it something from a professional looking at you from just a diet / weight standpoint? Or is it from a professional who ALSO understands your intent to get pregnant? If it's just your own goal, then you may have more flexibility. But if it's…

No. You shouldn't be beating yourself up about this. But it is understandable it's causing you some stress. If you're new to the whole counting calories thing, going over can make you feel like you screwed up. But you didn't. You were simply over your calories for the day. Weight loss and maintenance are long-term…

This is the big red flag, to me. This trainer does understand that you're a beginner, just trying to get things under control and build some good habits, and NOT someone training for the Olympics, right? I can't tell you if blood type impacts your body's response to a diet, because I haven't done any research on it. But it…

I know there's lots of food that I haven't eaten, simply because I haven't heard of it. But the ones that come to mind and I know I haven't eaten them are insects (I know they're always talking about bits and pieces of insects being in our food, but I never said "I'm going to eat this ant") and Vegemite.

This is a very important thing to remember. Yes, you were interested in him, and yes, it hurts to find that he is not reciprocating that interest or those feelings you have. Nobody can deny that you're hurting. But do bear in mind that, based on what he said, he was not assessing you or looking at you as a potential,…

I'm in the "as long as she is clean, I don't care if she shaves" group. The main issue is the feeling during the stubble phase, but heck, my face goes through that when I let my beard grow out, so...

I think some of the energy behind this comes from an attempt to make quick measurements, which are easier for cursory examinations, more individualized when it comes to the standards used. Some agencies will actually use waist measurement to assess body composition and, therefore, "health risk". I remember there was a big…

This is basically what I bring up if I ever hear of a gimmick from a friend that I know will be open to hearing there's no magic process. Usually it takes the form of a head nod with hands pensively resting on the desk and a statement that starts with "It makes sense that could work. After all, the big thing for most of us…

I think this is the big thing. It's not so much that the purposely gain fat as much as they're constantly focused on fueling growth and the increase in fat is simply a secondary effect of making sure you're eating enough. None of them sat there and said "I'm going to put on a lot of fat so I then can build muscle".

Right now, I tend to be partial to rowing as far as exercise I do for fun (so, outside of my usual progression-focused work). I like that it provides both a level of resistance workout and also a cardio workout that doesn't wear my shoes out (US size 15, Double-As don't come cheap). But I also like workouts that don't…

To be 75% done or better with my Master's Thesis and, if possible, a permanent profile (a military thing) for my chemo and radiation therapy impacted lungs. Those two things would go a long way to opening up my daily schedule.

I'm a YAYOG user, too. I really enjoy the freedom to do it pretty much anywhere I want. No worrying about if the gym's open, or if I should be out in public when I've got a cold (as was the case this month), if there's something I'd like to watch on TV, or if I need to be on-call and available for after-hours work. As long…

Given the opportunity, I tend to lean towards brining and using the oven. But I'm on my own, this year and we just had the office thanksgiving potluck, so I may just do something in the microwave, if I'm inclined to do anything special food-wise on Thursday.

There are some people who have similar mindsets. In some individuals, they use their level of fitness, particularly a lack thereof, as a kind of "attention shield". Something has gone on in their life and they don't want people attracted to them, or at least not physically attracted. Having been subjected to catcalls and…

I think part of why people are willing to neglect the obligation to themselves is that they will always accept whatever reason their mind comes up with. If their mind says "I'm tired" or "my stomach feels off, so I'm not going to exercise", they accept it. Their mind can be expected to go along with whatever reasoning it…

I'd settle for the time, clarity of mind, and abundance of research materials for my own thesis.

Breakfast, Lunch, and dinner using calorie-dense (or at least NON-diet / "lite" )foods, PLANNED snacks (planned as much as the meals are), and the occasional microwaveable / easy-prep calorie bomb worked for me. And I'm not joking about the calorie bomb. Back when I was looking at 3500-4000 calories a day, a microwave…
