My sons and I have been training for 2.5 years. When we started, my oldest could barely kick 2 feet off the ground. Today, he's almost in a full split and can kick me in the head. (I discourage them actually kicking me in the head, but it's been their goal and they were both super excited when they realized they can kick…

I've had mine for over a year and still use it at least once a week...and more often 2-3 times a week. I don't see it as a fad.

I started 2018 as a purple belt and with my foot in a boot. Throughout the year, I healed my foot and progressed to blue, green, brown and finally red. I fully expect red to take me a good chunk of 2019 and it will probably be 2020 before I test for my black belt...but I'm loving karate and am happy with my progress so far.

Coffee with coconut milk and stevia.

I order my groceries online and pick them up at 8am Sunday morning (usually before the rest of the house even wakes up.) That alone saves me a ton of time. My boys do karate 2x a week, so I signed up to do it with them. I figured I could either spend 45 minutes fiddling with my phone...or join them and get in a workout. We…

We have the option of training in gi shorts (which are so not made with women's hips in mind). It definitely makes it much cooler.

Mostly performing the kick itself and making all the way around without losing my balance.

Impressive spinning hook kick! The spinning hook kick is currently my nemesis...but I am determined to land it.

I signed my boys up for Karate...and instead of watching I take it with them. We go 2x a week to karate. I am currently also doing Beachbody on Demand workouts 4x a week...usually about 30 minutes. We are members at the YMCA and I go there when I'm between Beachbody programs for classes or to lift weights. My youngest goes…

My Chinese place has a section called "special diet menu". It's all protein & veggies, steamed together and then it comes with sauce on the side and white rice on the side. I use a small amount of the sauce and either some rice or none, based on my goals that week. I actually find it very satisfying.

I take it off at home and put it someplace safe...vs taking it off at the gym.

I drink a lot of water, so have frequent walks to the bathroom. :) When the kids were younger, I would fit in 30 minute workouts by getting up early of after they got into bed. These days, I send them out of the room and do my 30 minute workouts after dinner. (I have Beachbody on Demand for my workouts, but there are free…

I have 2 different Knot Theory bands that I wear. I've had one for over a year and just got a second color last week so I have choices. I was taking my rings off for karate and then forgetting to put them back on. It says nothing about the state of my marriage and is more about my finger feeling naked without the ring on.…

My boys and I were promoted to brown belt a few weeks ago and have begun training with commas. They were beyond excited to buy their sets today and use them for class. Sadly they only had 2 sets in stock and I have to wait for the next order to come in. (In our school, brown is 3 belts away from black...brown, red,…

We all wear the same gear, purchased through the school. (Century brand.) It was bulky and weird for a while, but I did get used to it. Give it a little time. I just upgraded our nasty stinky gloves to washable ones and I wish I did it earlier.

I decided I wanted to run and got a C25K app. My husband bought me an expensive treadmill. I realized pretty quickly that my knees can't handle running on a treadmill. I wish I had tried out the treadmills at the YMCA first.

We got our green belts on St. Patrick's Day! My youngest was feeling sick at the beginning of class, so he sat out and asked to join in the last 5 minutes of class since he was feeling better. They told him it was too late, so he cried on the sidelines with my husband while my oldest and I got our belts. When class ended,…

Sparring class on Saturday was crazy. There is a dojo tournament in a few weeks, so instead of the normal 2-3 adults that showed up to class, there were about 15 men who were all convinced they'll be winning the tournament. Luckily, several teenagers also came so I had someone to spar with. I wanted nothing to do with the…

Great job!

Thank goodness you don't have to use someone else's pee.

I had a bone bruise on my left foot, 4th metatarsal...possibly a stress fracture, but I skipped the MRI. I did sit out for 6 weeks, but I took my kids to the classes and watched attentively. As soon as the boot came off I went back to training. I'm still careful when I kick the bag with that foot and doing most of my…

Tuesday - kata class - I've nearly mastered my nunchuck kata...just need to make it sharper Thursday - sparring class Saturday - Les Mills Combat class at the YMCA

Awesome job on your reaching the January Goal! I reached my goal of catching up to my boys after taking a 7 week break due to a foot injury. I'm still working on punching higher, but I've been sparing with some taller guys the last few weeks and that's helped.

Kata class last night and was surprised with a promotion to blue belt. (We were supposed to be promoted the day I hurt my foot. My boys were promoted without me while I took 8 weeks off to heal. I wasn't expecting it until testing day on the 20th.) The kata we're learning is with nunchucks...extra points for not hitting…

NY says I can order and posses any number of razor sharp weapons from the martial arts catalog, I just can't order foam covered nunchucks. We also have a nunchuck requirement for our black belts.
-
1) Catch up to the progress my boys made while I was injured. 2) Work on punching upwards. When I spar with someone taller than me (most people now that I'm sparring other adults) I find myself always aiming at their chest and never towards their head.
-
My boys and I are currently training with nunchucks. My issue is that they are illegal to possess in NY. My 7 year old has illegal weapons in his karate bag. So, there is NO way I could use them in a self defense situation, as I'd be in trouble for using them. (Of course, right now I'd be more likely to hit myself in the…

I had my tubes tied 2 years ago the same way. I was surprised that it really did take 6-8 weeks before I could exercise much. I think I tried at week 6 and my body told me I needed to wait until 8. I've just come off 6 weeks without karate due to a foot injury. (Tonight is my first class back...I'm beyond excited.) I…

I'm super bummed. I hurt my foot November 18th. (Bone bruise on my 4th metatarsal tripping over a picnic basket of all things.) It was better last week, so I went the weekend without wearing the boot they gave me and doing a little more walking. Everything felt fine until my feet hit the ground this morning. At my checkup…

Right now, I've got a bone bruise in my foot and am doing nothing. Normally, I do 2-3 karate classes a week and then do beachbody workouts at home in between. (I pick a different program each month so I don't get bored.) I aim to 5-6 days of activity. Some days I'll double up and do a beachbody workout in the morning and…
