  • You don't have to be in crazy good shape to do this race. Not that I would try and convince anyone not to train up (because getting in better shape is part of the reason many of us are here right?) but it really isn't that neccessary. It is more of a fun run. Most people (unless they really cared about time) ended up…
  • I say figure out what works for you. Cut out grains and dairy for a while and see how you feel. Some people are sensitive to these things, others are not. I use a lot of paleo recipes and tried paleo for a while but found it wasn't necessary for me to be on such a strict diet. I do fine with dairy and some grains. I eat…
  • Yes it is a thing. I did the first race in MD. It was fun but overpriced.
  • ^^^^ This
  • Under Armour has quickly become one of my favorite brands for workout gear. I find it is slightly cheaper than some of the competitors (Nike, Reebok, Brooks, etc) but just as good if not better. I have a pair of cold gear tights that I prefer to any other pair of running tights I own and I prefer their shirts to other…
  • Changing to minimalist shoes has been really good for my running. If you don't like Vibrams I recommend Merrell's. They are very similar but without the seperated toes. A lot of people are wearing the NB minimus now as well. I liked the Merrell's better because of the fit (roomier toebox) but to each his/her own. I would…
  • Changing the way I ran helped reduce a lot of the knee pains/shin splints that have always plagued me in the past. I would recommend running barefoot (indoors or on grass, somewhere that won't hurt) and seeing how you strike the ground naturally. If the way you are running when wearing your shoes differs quite a bit I…
  • Baltimore here
  • I am always happy to see people up and moving, regardless of size or age. Whether it is walking, running, lifting, zumba, or anything else, they are taking the initiative to be healthier than the countless number of people who live completely sedentary lives.
  • I am considering it but have reservations. My bf did the Annapolis half and disliked the course quite a bit. It sounds like the route might be similar so I'm not so sure. On the other hand, it sounds like it may be a fun event. I am doing a full in May and want to schedule a few halfs in the following months to motivate me…
  • I think everyone has excellent points. I do Crossfit and love it!! But I agree with other posters that some gyms don't know how to teach lifts properly and sometimes discount form for speed. Not all gyms are created equal. I started at one where I began to feel they didn't really know how to teach that well and moved on to…
  • I can't run as fast on a treadmill as outdoors either. Most people I know have the opposite problem. I think it is because I only ran outdoors before ever thinking of getting on a treadmill and running on a treadmill will take an adjustment period. I don't love it but have found that it comes in handy this time of year…
  • I haven't tried that specific recipe but I have been adding spinach into my protein shakes for a while. I find it doesn't take away from the taste and is a great way to get in some added nutrition.
  • The military has not had any issues meeting its recruiting quotas over the past few years. Actually, branches have been meeting them faster because of economic problems and downsizing. I'm not sure where you got that information.
  • This happens to a lot of runners, especially one who use minimalist shoes and run a lot. I eat plenty of potassium and still get calf cramps. Compression gear helps a bit, I would recommend that. After a long run I always use compression socks to help recovery. You may just need to be patient while your calfs strengthen.…
  • I am doing a half in January and plan on attempting a full in April. I am running regularly now but don't plan on starting marathon specific training until after the New Year.
  • What type of pain is it? Is it a pain like a cramp or digestive?
  • I hated this race. It was badly organized and the route was terrible. Apparently I'm not the only one. There is a petition on change.org. I highly recommend signing it if you felt ripped off by this event. http://www.change.org/petitions/ram-racing-refund-runner-entry-fees-for-the-1232011-hot-chocolate-5k15k-in-dc
  • Another vote for shoes!!!! A good pair of shoes is invaluable for running and can help prevent injury.

  • Under the Community tab click on groups. There is a search function you can use to try and find groups. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more than one Crossfit groups, there are plenty of Crossfit peeps on this site.
  • There is a Crossfit group. You should check it out.
  • I wasn't trying to attack anyone but to be honest I have seen a lot of negativity from the Crossfit community about that clip. I didn't mean to come across like I thought you would act that way towards someone new in your box (because I don't think that). My intent was to have some people realize that they should look at…
  • I am aiming to do either a half or full next spring. I just started doing a marathon training program and if that goes well I will attempt the Rock n roll DC next march. If I decide the training is too much and I can't handle the mileage (yet) I will go for the half instead.
  • To be honest I think it is kind of rude to put her down because of that. Jillian does not do Crossfit and likely has a completely different mode of training. Who even knows if she has ever attempted some of those moves before. Just because she struggled during that workout doesn't make her "weak." I bet she could own a…
  • I will add a vote for the shuffle. It is so handy and doesn't distract from anything. It is very affordable and lightweight. I had an old nano and some other mp3 players before but they always bothered me with the weight or size. I forget I'm even carrying the shuffle.
  • Unfortunately there has been a lot of outspoken Crossfitters who have the mentality that if you aren't Crossfitting, you aren't really working out. There is a big "drink the kool-aid" attitude within the Crossfit community. It does not apply to the majority of Crossfitters who enjoy the workouts and community but it has…
  • You could probably try replacing it with another salty food like string cheese or cheese and crackers. Something like laughing cow's light spreadable cheese on triscuits or wheat thins would still be better than chips/fries.
