can you eat a small something w/protein? eg, a cheese stick? 4 oz of yogurt? protein digests slowly & thus enters & leaves your system more slowly than sugar stuff. 1 spoon of peanut butter, 10 almonds.

however they are the "epitome" of resistance training! particularly in the "terrible twos"

you can work out with toddlers, even pets, but really you'll find that weights are easier as they dont squirm as much and sometimes the toddlers dont weigh the same so you have different weights on each arm. Squats arent too bad, or lunges, but bench presses & barbell lifts are tough.
