  • After I hit him with my cane ;) I can appreciate his wisdom. What I understood from his reply is the following; 1. At race start, I need peak power. This can be developed / improved by including high intensity sprint intervals in my training (I would also add in some strength training to mix things up a bit). 2. To get to…
  • That's me as well. When I first started working out on the rower back in Sept, I used this same breathing technique (out on catch and drive, in on recovery) mainly because it fit what we were always told to do, i.e. exhale on the exertion portion of any physical activity. Think about how you breath when hitting a ball,…
  • I read somewhere that the sugars from fruit are better for you than the processed sugars because the fruit contains a balance of natural sugars and carbohydrates and fiber. Having said that, eating too many calories of ANY kind, will cause you to gain weight if your caloric intake is higher than the energy you expend.
  • I'm in ! Sounds like a challenge.
  • The article is a long one, and there are a few points I want to re-read then practice on the rower. Do you typically go for longer distances or short sprints ?
  • Great article, lot's of things to think about. Particularly the bit about having some air in the lungs on the catch to maintain stability in the core. Right now, my lungs are totally empty at that point. It just occurred to me that I might be over-reaching on the catch and over-compressing the trunk making it more…
  • I've been trying a new breathing technique lately after I've been on the rower for 15 minutes or so and start to feel like I'm running low on oxygen; I take a quick, DEEP breath after the catch and exhale completely at the end of the drive, I then take a SHORT breath on the recovery and short exhale again during the catch…
  • Thanks David ! I particularly like the videos from C2 as well, they're among the best out there. I've referred back to this same video a number of times to remind myself of the proper form. I had lower back issues years ago and am especially conscious about keeping good form on the catch.
  • This is great info, thanks to everyone who has contributed to the discussion, I hope others are finding it useful as well. Based on some of the responses above, it sounds like others are asking the same kind of questions I am and are a bit perplexed as to how to find what their healthy weight is. Looking healthy and being…
  • @JefferyJordin....as successful as you've been on the bike, I think you'll be equally successful on the indoor rower! It's a great workout and from a non-rider's perspective, it seems like the two activities are fairly similar in terms of the mindset needed to be successful, pace of workouts, aerobics, etc. And from what…
  • Hello All, I've been poking around on MFP for a month or so and just ran into this thread about rowing. Great to see others enjoying rowing and using it to lose weight / stay healthy ! My experience with rowing was limited to a few workouts with the Crew team as a freshman in college (Univ of San Diego) many, many years…
