I would go with either an elliptical trainer or a good exercise bike - like a spinning bike. I have a spinning bike and it's pretty easy on my joints.

I have the same problem. My shins usually stop hurting a mile or so into my walk. The instep pain... well, I've never really found much I can do about that except massage. I have a foot roller that I use to massage my feet before and after my walk. There are also some stretches for your shins. Just google shin splint…

I'm a 42 year old obese nurse. I have a few health problems related to my weight... mostly high blood pressure. I'm not diabetic... yet. I take care of my mother, who is in poor health and unable to care for herself. My sister also lives here They are both obese as well, but neither is at all supportive of my weight loss…
