  • Sounds like you've got the nutrition in better check than I did - carry on! If it changes, and you're running more miles than you can handle because Food Is Awesome, and More Is Better, consider if a static goal number is a better option. I have a love/hate thing about running. I'm in the middle of marathon training, and…
  • I've done exactly what you're describing, but I don't recommend it. It's a slippery slope, and ultimately, I couldn't outrun my fork. I changed my calorie goal to a TDEE estimate instead of NEAT so that I wouldn't be tempted to run myself into an injury, trying to allow for more food.
  • Thanks for acknowledging. Good luck.
  • I am fairly well convinced that eating at a deficit of greater than 50% of your TDEE is the polar opposite of "doing it right" or "healthy." As a matter of fact, that's the level of nutrition fed to the subjects of the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. But they didn't prioritize their protein intake, so I guess it's totally…
  • Sorry - forgot to post any snacks. Usually I eat a protein granola bar at 2am, first break at work. At 5, I get another break, and I eat 300g of fat-free vanilla Greek Yogurt with 100g frozen strawberries, 50g frozen blueberries, and I'm using up a bag of chia seeds I bought a while ago, so I throw about 10g of those in…
  • Losing so quickly at such a low weight already is a great way to lose extra muscle! I bet you chose the sedentary activity level and chose 2 lbs per week as a weight loss goal. You are don't seem to be logging your exercise calories to eat them back - which increases your already steep deficit. It will take longer to…
  • This is close to the page I'm on. I work 3rd shift, so pretty much all of my calories are consumed during your fasting window. I'm already "ignoring" exercise calories, since I built them into my calorie goal. So, at 5'3 and a girl, I'm eating 2400 for very slow loss/not quite maintenance. I haven't got a start or end…
  • @heybales I was interested in reading the blog you linked to, but it says I don't have permission. Would you please check your privacy settings?
  • Oh, man - I replied to this on my phone at work after only reading the first page - so sorry. OP is likely LONG gone...
  • You would calculate your TDEE (also your BMR, but you're not in a coma, so that's irrelevant, anyway) based on your height, weight, gender and activity level. From there, you subtract 500 calories per day for each pound you want to lose. So you'd need to create a 1500 - 2500 calorie deficit. Even eating 0 calories, you may…
  • If you're on a computer, here's how you would set the privacy settings for your age on your profile. In the settings menu, (circled at top of page) there's an option for "Privacy Settings" (circled in middle right of page) where you can use the drop-box to select who can see your age.
  • As a 34A, myself, I hear what you're saying, but I'm here to speak from experience about that "hello back fat" from above. It doesn't all just squish up in the front, like you'd hope...
  • I guess the last time I looked, Amazon wasn't a thing, and maybe that was a time in my life that $100 would have been too much. I definitely never stumbled across one for $20 even secondhand. Today I managed to forget to go back in the bedroom and stand on the scale after I went to the bathroom to pee. That solves the…
  • Sure, but those things are expensive, and it's bold of you to assume I can remember how much I weighed for the duration of the 30 second trip to the computer from the scale... The hi-tech bluetooth gadget will remember a week's worth of weighings, until I am bothered to carry my phone into the bedroom, where all the data…
  • ***snipped a whole bunch of digression*** My bodyweight scale is bluetooth enabled - I like not having to make arrangements to *see* the scale when I step on it. Not that I don't want to know the number, but having to find glasses or contact lenses first is detrimental to actually accomplishing the task in any sort of…
  • You could both be right, here. I started running "late" compared to most of the runners I know. So, at 45, I'm still climbing toward my potential. I suppose I run the risk that I will not get as good as I might have if I'd started as a teen. But I'm not rolling down the other side of the hill, yet - even though if it were…
  • I am. I recognize that there are companies out there mining my data for their own profit, and I just can't seem to bring myself to care who knows how many calories I ate, at what time of day, or how much I weigh. I have a few other data mining apps in the loop, too. Achievement gives me points that I can redeem for actual…
  • I agree that THAT thread certainly sends a lot of red flags that OP is being far too restrictive. But I'd suggest that she means a 1200 calorie deficit there, since her intake doesn't seem to add up to 1200 calories! Yikes! A deficit of greater than 25% is pretty aggressive. More than 50% is extremely, dangerously low.
  • There's a difference between a 1000 calorie deficit and a 1000 calorie goal. The way the OP words her post, you can't be sure which idea she's espousing. Depending on how much she weighs, a 1000 calorie deficit might not be extreme at all - but a 1 hour eating window is very short. Not that I think there's necessarily a…
  • Zombies, Run! is on Season 9. It's a great app. The only app I own that I paid money for. A subscription, even! So, I'm already primed to run from zombies... yes, the app sometimes spooks me into a higher heart rate. Mostly it's not the zombie groans, though - there are other surprises that work well as audio jump-scares.…
  • Made with half n' half, it will be highly caloric, compared to most store-bought yogurts. Seems like an awful lot of work, too.
  • I haven't raced in the winter, yet. The first race of the season is usually the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle, in Chicago - it's generally pretty chilly for standing around in the corrals, but I've always enjoyed the race itself. My last race of the season is usually a Turkey Trot - on Thanksgiving Day. The past few…
  • @SwtHedgehog - If you've got a place to put a treadmill, and can afford it, absolutely I'd recommend it. Go do other outdoor things for the vitamin D. My treadmill is the best investment I've ever made! This winter the bearings in the roller went out, and I was DEVASTATED for the 3 weeks I waited for Amazon to deliver new…
  • Not to discourage, but if you're eating at roughly a 500 calorie per day deficit, you *should* lose roughly one pound per week. That won't work out to 50 lbs. in 6 months. 1000 calories a day sounds awfully steep to me, and a year sounds like a really long time. At first glance, I think I'd split the difference and try for…
  • I get it. I don't want the attention from random people who intend to encourage me and offer support, either. In my brain, I understand that they mean well. In my heart, I just don't want them butting into my efforts. It's another one of those mental challenges that goes along with running. On my better days, I can retort…
  • Mine is also public. Go nuts. I'm currently using TDEE to eat to a goal of 2400 calories per day, and Fitbit makes it's adjustments, so my goal isn't necessarily reflected - and I have also blown right past that 2400 several times in the past few weeks... So, take all that with a grain of salt.
  • It's because you haven't been as active as the activity level you selected while you've been, you know, *sleeping* since midnight when the current day rolled over. It should start to shrink the negative calories pretty quickly when you start moving around, and then start to earn you some positive calories. Even at…
  • Here is a great calculator. https://exrx.net/Calculators/WalkRunMETs I would consider that you should be able to enter the weight of yourself plus a backpack to find a general estimate of the number of calories you'd burn per mile. I have found, through experimentation, that if your uphill and downhill rates are balanced,…
  • But not right away, what with all the water retention from healing such a drastic surgery... And it would probably leave scars.
  • Myself? I am pretty active - it's pretty easy to find room for some ice cream or a burger every day when the daily allowance is 2400. I'm training for a marathon, and that includes "exercise calories" by way of the TDEE method of calorie estimation. I'm in my healthy weight range, so I'm pretty much attempting maintenance,…
