  • For my first half last October, to avoid an unwanted/unwelcomed bathroom break mid-race I opted to lay off coffee for the 3 days before the race, and I also decreased my fiber by switching to simple carbs (think white breads etc.) Other than that I didn't really change my eating habits much; no real carb loading done. The…
  • I don't know if I *have* to have even mileage, but, I don't like to stop short of my planned mileage so it usually works out to being even anyway - except this past week-end when my IT bands would not let me go any farther.
  • I do not like Tim's coffee...I'll drink one in a pinch, but it is not my taste. I prefer a darker roast than that. If I'm out and about and want to buy a coffee it will be a Starbucks dark roast. When we brew our own at home we like Kicking Horse Organic beans.
  • I'm Canadian. So I slowly lower the bar back to the floor, apologize for rubbing it against my shins so abruptly on the way up and repeat x5.
  • Cheese - 1 oz? Really? Or rather a 1cmx1cm cube..... Chocolate Chips/Raisins - 1 tbsp...at least give me 1/4 cup.
  • The coldest I've been crazy enough to run in was -32C (about -26F) and I had about a 2 inches of frost build up on my face mask by the time I got home (Picture in my profile). I layered as much as I could while still trying to stay light, and I have yak tracks for traction aid. As long as I don't need snowshoes/skis to get…
  • I'm training for a full in June, with a half in May, and so far most of my training has been done on the treadmill. My long runs I do at level 1 incline, to mimic what I might encounter outdoors, and I keep my pace nice and easy ~10:30/mile. I don't throw hills into the mix on my long run. I do however do a treadmill hill…
  • Sadly our winter this year has been extremely cold, and a lot of snowfall leaving some sidewalks and paths impassable. So, I've done 90% of my marathon training on my treadmill so far, with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 outside runs. It's starting to warm up so my long runs will hopefully all be outside now (Thank goodness…
  • My favourite right now is my UA Still Gotta Have It. Even though it claims to be a mid-impact bra, I find it offers me great bounce reduction/support and I'm a DD cup with a smaller ribcage. I also use Nike dri-fit bras, but I always find that they are drenched. I haven't run in it forever, because it's now too big, but…
  • Congrats on your upcoming first half, how exciting!! Adding on to what everyone else has already said (don't go out too fast!!!) a few things that still stick with me from my first half last October are: 1) Smile through out the course. 2) Wave to spectators/volunteers/supporters, and thank them for coming out 3) Enjoy…
  • Definitely unprofessional - front office or behind the scenes. It's one thing to kick your shoes off under your desk, but a completely different thing to be barefoot in the office all day.
  • Black...preferably while still wearing my fuzzy slippers and robe.
  • I completed my first half-marathon last October. I have another one on May 4th and I'm training for my first full on June 15. I love to chat about running, running nutrition and all sorts of other goodies. Add me if you'd like!
  • When I trained for my first half I just used the same little packages of fruit gummies that I buy for treats for the kids. You know- Dora, Lightening McQueen, Scooby Doo. LOL During my actual race they offered a Gu Station at Mile 7. I used that from Mile 8 - Mile 10. Eating properly before the runs seems to benefit me and…
  • While I prefer to take a run outside vs. the treadmill anytime that isn't always feasible. During the week, I run on the treadmill when I don't have anyone to watch the kids. I've also been confined to the treadmill for most of my runs this winter due to extreme temperatures (-39C) - just last week-end I pulled off 14…
  • I'm with you. While I celebrate the victories of my country in all athletics at this year's winter games, I was much more interested in how the curling played out over hockey.
  • I'm currently training for my first marathon which is on June 15. I ran my first half last October, and I have another half on May 4th. I took a training plan and modified it so that I'll end up with 3 20 mile training runs. Just yesterday my training plan had me at 13.1 miles and it builds slightly then a lower week,…

  • 99% of the time I just hit the ground running. My pace is usually slow at the start and then picks up after the first mile to my normal pace. After I do a good 10 or so minute stretching session for my quads, hamstrings, calves, hips etc. and I'll roll. The other 1% of the time I will do some dynamic movement, mostly…
  • Netflix on my tablet. For anything less than 5miles I can make do with music, but, 5+ miles and I watch something. I have to say though, I'm ready for these insane windchills to go away for good because after the 11miles I did on the dreadmill this past week-endI am almost at my capacity for how long I can tolerate running…
  • Thank you for sharing this with us. A big congratulations on a top notch job preparing for your race and putting it all into practice come race day. I am encouraged by your post as I am into week 3 of my marathon training plan and may be turning to you for more advice as I draw closer to my race date. Congrats again!
  • You aren't the first to make the observation, and you won't be the last either. I have been here for a bit more than a year, and like any other open space on the internet there will be all kinds of people. BUT, I have found that for the most part everyone who has taken the time to help me out, answer my questions (even the…
  • I was also going to suggest deviled eggs. Yummo!
  • It was actually my husband who suspected both times that I was pregnant. My biggest "flag" was that I didn't have my usual crazy hormonal/emotional swing the week before my period was due, I was rather mellow actually.

  • Check out some of the straight and loose fits at American Eagle. Their women's jeans are a great cut for muscular legs, so I'm thinking that the men's will be too.
  • By law kids here can't be left unattended/home alone under the age of 10. BUT, at 10 they can not be in charge of caring for any other siblings. At 12, when they can take the provincial babysitter program, they are then able to care for younger siblings. My daughter just turned 7, and she is pretty reliable already, so, we…
  • My bank offers a service where every transaction you make using your debit card rounds the purchase up to the next $5 increment. It gets deposited into a separate account and earns interest monthly. I don't miss the extra nickles and dimes here and there, and it adds up quickly. Write everything down on paper that you…
  • One thing that I find is that portions in restaurants are usually twice the size of a regular serving. Think about starting with a salad and splitting the entrée with your spouse/other family member. Bring some granola bars/trail mix etc. with you and drink lots of water. If I let myself get hungry I am more incline to go…
