I second (or third) taking the next day off work. Also, walking down the stairs backwards was WAY easier on my legs for those first couple of days. SMILE. Trust your training. TAPERING MAKES YOU CRAZY! Expect to feel a bit of a slump a couple of days post marathon - when you still want to talk about it, but the rest of the…

I rolled my ankle back in July, 5 minutes before my mud-run. It swelled up tightly in my shoe, and I ran a bit faster than my previous year's time. I did experience a significant amount of swelling and bruising. Xrays ruled out broken bones, but I was in a tensor and on crutches for 6 days, and resumed walking with the…

Congratulations! I know that exact jonesing feeling you are talking about. I felt the same after my first 1/2 in October 2013 :-) Way to go.

I've got a lovely discoloured nail right now...thought it was going to drop off but its a fighter. My kids call it my marble toe because of how it's swirly and coloured. My other running problems be motorists who don't look right before trying to turn right....right across the sidewalk/path where I'm trying to cross. I…

WOW. What an incredible first marathon experience. A road course will be a walk in the park for you now. Congratulations on your accomplishment!!

I prefer to put the PB on both slices of bread, and then spread the jelly on top of the PB. Makes for EXTRA goodness.... Or, throw a Banana in there too.

I am 175-180 pound mid foot striker, and I wear Mizuno Wave Rider 16s. I get about 300 miles on them without issue, then start creeping up to 350 miles and I can't really tolerate them longer than about 13 miles. I currently have 3 pair in rotation - one is only for 10K and under, one is still good up to 15 miles before I…

For my mud runs, and the couple of trail runs I've done I've enjoyed my Saucony Peregrine trail shoes. The terrain I was running on was sand, tall grass prairies, minimal hills, moss/bog.

I have been running at 4:30 in the morning at least once a week lately, and yes it is dark. I make sure to wear things with reflective strips, and I run on the road, facing traffic. I also have a modified route for these runs, but it works out because I have made this run one of my shorter runs of the week, 4~miles. I'm…

Hat in the rain, or for runs where I know that my run will outlast the sunlight so sunglasses just become something I have to carry. Sunglasses for daylight runs. No to visors. In the cooler temperatures I wear my Buff as a headband/ear warmer, or around my neck/mouth. . . when it's really cold but still sunny, I wear my…

Don't forget to enjoy yourself during your race. Smile. Say thank you to the Volunteers. High Five a kid on the sidelines. Give the ol' gun to the head pose when you pass a photographer on the course.

Sometimes I can get a couple of wears out of my dri fit stuff. Just make sure when you are washing it not to use fabric softener of any kind. I also prefer to hang my dri-fit stuff to dry, and not run it through the dryer. 90% of my gear is Under Armor.

Women's clothing retailers, and their manufacturers are all over the place. At 5'11 and 175 pounds I have pants that range from a size 6 to 10, dresses in 8s and 10s, and tops from smalls to larges that all fit me exactly the same. Shop for proper fit, forget about the tag.

All of this! I did go out and buy a pair of trail shoes - but, I signed up for a trail race trifecta, and I was doing a mud run so it made sense to have them. I especially appreciated their extra grip in some of the wet parts of the trails.

Someone told me last year, as I prepared to face my first Canadian prairie fall and winter of outdoor running, to dress for 10 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. So, for the most part in fall, I'm happy just in regular running tights, a dri-wear tee and a long sleeve shirt over top. I have light running gloves if…

Thanks for all the great replies, and exercises. After talking to a PT friend, he also advised against the brace as he thought it would hinder proper healing and strength. I did try a run last night, and I felt no pain, weakness, numbness etc. during or immediately following the run. My ankle was a bit stiff feeling this…

Breast sizes fluctuate with weight gain/loss, pregnancies etc. I used to think they were the only thing that I had going for me, but I didn't like them/felt uncomfortable with the attention they received. However, I have grown to love my breasts, and my entire body, and they are one of my many assets - right up there with…

Goes hand in hand with the microwave mentality of today. Unfortunately a good majority of the population would rather have things NOW with little effort, rather than put the work in to get there. This applies to weight loss, work ethic, meal choices (with our without weight loss in mind) etc.

^^There are some great ideas there. I don't run with music/headphones outside. I also don't run during low-light hours unless I am a smidge longer coming home during the week, but by then I'm usually only 5 or 10 minutes away from home, in a safe neighborhood. I've never felt the need to have "protection" from…

Thank you for sharing. I feel as though, for me personally, I skipped the "racer" portion of evolution. Not to say that I didn't run a few races before I felt like a runner - in fact it wasn't until during my first marathon that I actually felt like I could call myself a runner, but during those prior races I wasn't…
