  • This nails it. I did my 1st Warrior Dash last September and loved it! Cross train and sprints.
  • Absolutely! My first ever race was a 10k. I had been preparing for a 5k but decided I wanted more of a challenge so I bumped up to the 10k training just a few weeks prior. I'm not even a very good runner, had zero race experience, and still ran it all (no stops) in 56 min. You should be fine. Good luck!
  • Did my first one in September. I was ok on the obstacles, but not the run. I had cracked 2 ribs and couldnt run for 6 weeks leading up to the event. Plus I was in the 3pm time slot and it was quite hot. All things considered, I was pretty happy with 42 minutes. I saw a lot of people skipping obstacles which kind of ticked…
  • Near Grand Rapids....
  • just lightly wet the strap where the transmitter is - not the whole strap. On the contrary, you should sweat when you work out so no, it will not dry out. Hit the button to stop 'recording' how ever you want. Some stop right at end of workout, some wait a few till HR comes back down, etc. Just taking it off does not stop…
  • I fall asleep between 10 and 11pm, up at 4:30. I sit alone at a PC in my home office for my job. Staying awake in the afternoon is a big battle. Frequent quick trips for a glass of water or whatever to break the mundane quietness to wake me back up. Gotta do what ya gotta do. Just flat out no other time of the day for me…
  • I mostly go to the gym at 5 but occasionally run outside with a friend first before spin class or boot camp class. Yes it sucks getting up that early and I dislike always being tired in the afternoon but its the only time to fit it in and I'm still always glad I did. For advise I would say to try to find a partner to run…
  • My understanding based on my physical therapist friend is clicking is ok as long as there's no pain with it. I have that in my right knee, even just walking down the stairs
  • Didnt know there were actual plans by those names, but I'm a hunter and a hobby farmer. We always have turkey or venison I shot, or chicken and pork we raised ourself.
  • Started running over the winter. I went right to a 10k for my first race in May and that was 56min. with a huge bottlenecked start (7,000 runners) Was gonna do a 5k a few weeks ago but had to skip due to a rib injury. I'm guessing I'd be about 25min in a 5k but not sure. Important part is just doing YOUR best. Have fun!
  • Good advice! ^ I had to think twice and try not to laugh though....As a guy in the U.S., I read 'lose a stone' and took that an entirely different way - like, being taken out of the gene pool indefinately...LOL. Sorry...
  • sorry Stormguy, No. (lol) I should have waited till a cute young lady posted.... P.S. I'm the guy on the left of this photo
  • 41 and in the best shape since - well - ever! I can bike further, run faster, and lift more than ever before. My wife no longer needs to trade me in for two 20-yr olds! lol
  • I'm a guy (41 yrs) so my numbers probably dont really matter much, but I recently had 2 different tests done and they came back very close: 16.1% and 16.3%. I'm 5'10" and 165lbs and have a pretty slim build. Like others have said, ladies should have a higher % than guys. Best wishes on your journey to recovery!
  • sounds high to me. I'm not too far from your age/weight, but have been working out a little longer. I have a Polar FT40. When my average HR is in the 130's like that, I'd show maybe half that amount of calories burned. I get to that 1000/hr range when I average 160bmp with a long hard run. At least for me, the 130'ish…
  • You've received a ton of great advice - nothing more to add except another vote for 'go for it!' And certainly try it several times before making a decision if you like it or not. I've seen young skinny cute girls leave after 15min because they couldnt take it, but we have some regulars that are over 60, others that are…
  • I get up at 4:30, get to gym at 5am, workout till 6:45, shower and get home by 7:15. Get son on bus, work till 5, then the usual busyness of life (kids,events,yard/house,etc) till 8 or 9pm. No, I do not like mornings anymore than anyone but I know I must make it work, like it or not. "No excuses - just do it"
  • Probably about a million posts in MFP with this same question - might want to search the site for that info. You'll see that my opinion is similar to the majority: Get a Polar w/ chest strap.
  • Cinnamon, raisins, a dab of brown sugar, a splash of skim milk. Sometimes instead of brown sugar i'll use 1/2 scoop of Jay Robb chocolate protein powder (yummy!)
  • Self employed real estate appraiser. Mostly focus on commercial/industrial/office but also do some residential and vacant land. Right now I'm working on a landscape/nursury business, a nature center, a home/land being taken by the State for a road project, a home that just burned so insurance co needs an estimate of…
  • Could be SO many things....See if your doc will give you a referal to a physican therapist. I've had shoulder surgery, lots of therapy, and its still far from perfect. I wouldnt wish all that on anyone. Don't mess around - attend to it asap.
  • And a tip to pass along, if anyone cares. This comes from a physical therapist who is also a Cat-2 bike racer and just did a 100+ mile mtn bike race in snowy Minnesota. When standing (hills/etc) learn to tilt your pelvis back/out a little. It naturally wants to 'fall forward' and you'll put a lot of extra stress on your…
  • I might be all washed up, but I'm gonna take a different approach than most of the other replies. But first, when you say they are bouncing around I'm assuming they DO have decent tension on (you did describe it as a standing hill climb afterall) and they are moving side to side to use body weight to push harder up the…
  • I do! I do lots of classes. Sometimes I'm the only one but usually there's at least a few 'regulars'. It was intimidating at first but now I dont really care. I do spinning 3-4X/week, a boot camp type class 2X/week, and occasionally kickboxing (but they changed the time so its harder to make it there). Three of those…
  • Exactly...What return? I had to pay over $8,000. Joys and tears of owning a small business....Thankfully we're solid financially and had the money, but it was quite a shock! No vacations this past year because of it. And we're working to be 100% debt free. Only thing left is the house and that should be pd within 2 yrs.…
  • An employee at the Spartan Y learned about a serious heart problem via high readings on her HRM. I wouldn't let that go too long assuming its a technical error! If it keeps up, see a doc just to be sure!! I dont seem to ever get false readings on mine. If I dont wet it first it just flat out wont register the HR.
  • I can't really complain about how much PE our 3 kids have at school, but I'm shocked at the outdated info the teachers are using. They should teach the kids the RIGHT way (form, etc). They stretch cold muscles first but no stretching after. Competitions doing full sit ups so the kids are pulling so hard on head/neck to go…
  • Yikes! I eat almost that much at breakfast! Oatmeal, 1 slice of whole wheat toast w/ PB, 1 hardboiled egg. Oh, and a banana before hand on the way to the gym - I still count that as breakfast. 501 cals. Back to your question - sounds like you hit the foods I'm aware of. I second the PB reply before me. But I'd be concerned…
  • During winter I go 5-6 days a week from 5am-7am. I alternate cardio and strength days, but some are classes which incorporate both. On Sat its a spin class from 7a-8a. Then sometimes I'll go again 1-2 evenings but only as time allows. Once spring arrives my world changes and I cant go nearly as often until fall comes back…
