Well if the concept can't be defined - or is defined in 9000 different ways how do you promote it? Why should it even be promoted? Why not teach people about macros/micros and promote flexible dieting. That is basically what everyone who claims to be a "clean eater" is doing anyways. This way you remove the implied idea…

There is no good reason to detox since our bodies handle that, so why should/would MFP promote it? Why shouldn't people be annoyed that MFP is spreading information that is useless? Since MFP has this great avenue to spread information, shouldn't they spend their efforts towards promoting sustainable, evidence backed,…

I wonder about this. I used to take this as gospel and had the same view as you, but now that I see people actively cutting to ridiculously lean levels (i.e. Alberto Nunez & Ogus) while not eating totally "clean" (for the purposes of this discussion I will assume clean means unprocessed or non-"junk" food - but I really…

Agree 100% This is not the first blog post I have rolled my eyes at either.

I don't see the problem with her saying she isn't interested in hearing people say "stop drinking". I think she was just being honest that she won't stop drinking so to keep the thread on track she let people know right away. Good move IMO - but some people seemed to get their jimmies a bit rustled by it.
-
Well to be fair, this thread title is misleading. The Verge article says that calorie counting LEADS to bad science/bad gadgets, and they present some pretty great examples. i.e. the wearable gadget that claims to be able to auto track calorie intake, or the app that allows you to take a picture of your plate of food and…

I might have a different take on things than most, since I will not give up my rockstar nights. I say go out, enjoy yourself and it's a new day the next day. Now obviously, it simply isn't something you will be able to do every weekend anymore, unless you limit your intake. You can also try switching to lower calorie…

LOL This is kind of what I always think when I see the mean people threads, my introduction to the internet was being a fat white guy posting on a hip-hop message board for almost a decade. This place is Candyland compared to that den of hatred. I have seen some mean things said to others, I have had mean things said to me…

I just enjoy the discussion in general and am open to learning from everyone - so when someone says something as absolute as you did - I ask for them to back it up since a lot of people read the forums and it's a chance for us all to learn. I didn't mean a one on one
-
Oh ok, thanks, now I know in the future not to try and have a discussion with you. Will save us both a lot of time. Edit: and I am not being snarky, say that with all due respect and honesty.
-
Gotcha. And I truly appreciate you linking those. My initial reason for posting was because someone (not you) said every single study shows abysmal failure rate, and I wasn't sure if that was true and felt it was a pretty strong statement to make and not back up. BTW - Was one of the studies you mentioned, the paper that…
-
20% is NOT abysmal and is not the 5% mentioned in the news article. Thanks for the links though - bookmarking now! Edit: and as many as you got
-
Can you link some of those studies? I don't believe that every study shows abysmal failure rates, but unless you direct me towards them I won't know for sure. It's also impossible to judge the methodology used in said studies. Doing my own search through studies - i haven't found a) the paper mentioned in this news article…

I did some reading since I had never heard of this type of WLS - and wow - that's intense. I wouldn't feel confident lending advice in this situation at all. I know most of the people responding are well meaning, and the OP hasn't been the most tactful in her communication so it is easy to jump on her - but damn, that is a…

Definition of Clean Eating #4080

The only way I found to do it was to coat them in cornstarch - but then that adds calories.

Honor your personal preference. i.e. If you love carbs, why cut them out? If you hate running, why run? Long term dieting is a battle regardless, so I personally don't think that fighting yourself on top of that is a great idea.

I have been losing weight since November 2012 - and I still do not feel very comfortable promoting my own methods in this manner. I think that at 5 months in and not yet at your goal it is maybe jumping the gun a bit to; so aggressively promote your 1200 calorie diet, get defensive when offered advice, and encourage others…

Thank you! Just ordered. Currently reading Thinking Fast and Slow (Daniel Kahneman) and this will go perfectly with that.

Wow - you look awesome! Congrats!

Thanks for this actually - this helped me direct my own curiosity to learn more about P value

Ahhh ok - good point :flowerforyou:

LOL I know what 5% means. What I am saying is 1 in 20 doesn't seem "nearly impossible" to me, but I guess that really comes down to semantics. I just have an issue with the article using terms like "nearly impossible" and "outliers". 1 in 20 seems statistically significant to me - but like I said I don't know a lot about…

I probably missed this in the thread, but does anyone have a link to the actual paper the CBC article is discussing? From reading the article a couple things come to mind instantly... Typical Media Spin: Media =/= science and in some cases does a horrible job of presenting research. I saw this mention on the CBC nightly…

I went with fiber and then calcium. I chose calcium because it is something I sometimes struggle to hit, so I wanted it right in front of my face (so to speak)

Count me in as a non sugar tracker. I removed both sodium and sugar from my MFP tracker. As for protein goals, here is a great article on it: http://evidencemag.com/dieting-protein-needs/

I agree 100%. I'm just curious about other's justification for saying it isn't.
-
Nice try? I am being genuine... I truly don't know the difference, and am a little confused as to why walking wouldn't be considered exercise...
-
Just curious - what is your definition of exercise and what would preclude walking from it?
