  • could you maybe find a workout that isn't so boring? I go to the gym because I love it. I cant imagine going and hating it.
  • Op, you asked for compound lifts. They are the big 5 - squats, OHP, bench, pendlay row and deadlift. I think what you are looking for are accessory lifts. I have done a variety of them over the years and tend to narrow down a list of 5 or 6. 3 times a week I do the compound lifts + accessory lifts I tend to do the same…
  • I am not sure if this thread is totally spot on or seriously over thinking things. I'm not sure why it is so scary and intimidating. What's to be scared of? We are all people. To those people who are scared of the free weights section - what do you think will happen? I am a 42 year old woman have been in the free weights…

  • Hi guys, I've been a bit slack at recording my workouts lately so will try harder to log in everyday to be accountable. Yesterday Monday 15th July * madcow: squats military Press dead lift (dead lifted my own bodyweight for the first time!!) - apparently trainers aren't impressed until you can pull 1.5 X your bodyweight! *…
  • I have the fitbit app on my phone. I often keep my phone in my bag and it still registers steps. it doesn't seem to be activated by arm swinging. I don't know how accurate it is and I don't log them as I think walking is just a part of my daily background calorie burn but it certainly knows I am moving when its in my bag.
  • boxing followed by weights
  • the heart rate monitor would be tracking your calorie burn all the time so I'd say it will do what you want. it might not count steps but it is advertised as working well for spinning as far as calorie burn is concerned.
  • I started a programme about 12 weeks ago that has seen a big improvement in my strength as well as the look of my arms, shoulders and back. I started with stronglifts 5X5 for about 9 weeks, then madcow for the last 4 weeks. Both are compound lift programmes. my routine looks like this: Monday: squats, bench press, row +…
  • I'm not going to be much help. I blame the munchies for my weight gain in my 20s. I was the queen of munchies! I stopped smoking but the munchies stayed with me. I think the munchies was a harder habit to break than the smoking!

  • Big Elliott hulse fan here! Op I'm not sure more protein in your diet is what you need to stop your tiredness. A good balanced diet and more rest along with a sensible workout routine to fit your goals should be sufficient. Unless you are actively trying to build or repair muscle (in which case swimming alone is not…
  • I wouldn't say I'm experienced but I have recently broken the 10k barrier and ran my first 10k charity race last weekend. Make sure you get your usual breakfast - I didn't as it was an early start so I scoffed a ham sandwich before the start and felt very sick at the end of the run. Go to the toilet 10 mins before you have…
  • You 'should' exercise as much or as little as makes you happy and keeps you healthy. If you enjoy Jillian Michaels then I'd carry on with that. Are you loosing weight as you'd like? As for what I do: 3 days a week strength training 2 days a week circuits 2 rest days (I may go for a run if I can find someone to go with. I…
  • I love the idea of thinking of my legs as machines and not susceptible to tiring. I'm going to steal that idea and hope it works for me!
  • I have done stronglifts 5X5 and am now 3 weeks into madcow. It depends what results you are looking for as to which 'worked best'. I enjoyed both and certainly saw an increase in size and definition in my arms/chest/back even whilst eating at a deficit.
  • Have a chat with the guys in the 'goal - gaining weight' board. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/categories/goal-gaining-weight

  • have you had a chance to look from another computer yet?
  • Sorry, not sure what plyos are (I'll Google it after I've typed this) . It's a class called box it out, a mixture of circuits and boxing/punching. We partner up and, for example, the person in the gloves will do 10 push ups then 20 punches and the person with the pads will do jump squats while they wait to tap the punches.…
  • Hi, I think the first thing we need to know is what you think you will enjoy. Do you like cardio? running? in the gym or outside? do you like workout videos at home or classes at the gym? Do you want to use the weight machines at the gym or the free weights? Do you have a gym membership? do you want one? don't worry about…
  • Yesterday : Box-it-out. 50 minutes of circuit type boxing Today : Madcow week 3 day 1. • They are the same links I used in the message boards. It's a dropbox. Hopefully it's your firewall. Can you let me know if you can see it from another machine? Thanks for looking though :)
  • Coffee for me. I don't like that "pre workout" feeling. Makes me jittery
  • I also have the goal to be able to do chin ups and dips. With that in mind I have been doing assisted chin ups - the assistance coming from a bounce on the bosu ball. What do you think? Note : the rack is about 3 inches higher than the rack I usually use which makes it tougher. I had also done my full workout prior to…
  • Hi. I'm a 42 year old woman. I've been training for about 2.5 years now. I've lost (and gained and lost!) about 50lbs through diet and general jogging and dumbell routines. I was totally inactive before I turned 40. In the last 6 months or so I have found the compound lifts and started working mainly on them plus some…
  • thank you. I think I am hitting parallel. As you can tell from the giggling, the PT's aren't all that helpful. I'll see if I can set up my phone on a bench, otherwise I'll work on this for a week or 2 then ask him to take another film and get him to stay still. My shoes are Nike Flex. Not as flat as converse but flatter…
  • Thanks, I think there's about 42.5kg on the bar. My heaviest lifts were when I was doing 5X5 SL where got up to about 55kg before I lost my form/nerve. I'm working my way back up there very slowly with Madcow. When I looked at it I thought my knees were coming too far over my feet but the replies I got on another site were…

  • I take a break when I feel my body needs it. I've been training in one way or another for 2.5 years now and I think I've taken a week off maybe 3 or 4 times. It does seem to renew my energy and my enthusiasm.
  • Todays exercise 10k charity race in 1hr 3 minutes. - utterly exhausted! Got to start training for next year now!
