Depends how you want to proceed. The best take is, "I am an adult, this is how I am eating and it is not up for discussion." However, I know sometimes that doesn't work. If you want to give them "proof" then read "The Big Fat Surprise" by Nina Teicholz and arm yourself with facts. Facts probably won't help, either, but at…

Heat a small skillet to medium. Add a pat of butter and heat until it melts and foam subsides (but butter should not be brown - if it is skillet is too hot). Crack an egg into skillet (into a bowl first, if you are concerned about shells or technique, then slide into skillet). Let cook in skillet a few minutes. If it is…

Bacon's Heir makes flavored pork rinds ("pork clouds") that aren't full of junky ingredients. But they are kind of expensive and for some mysterious reason they are cooked in olive oil instead of lard.

I think we need to give the OP a break and direct him to the Low Carber Daily Forum like I did in my second post . He said he is thinking of keto but not doing keto currently. It sounds like he is shooting for 80-100 g carbs/day at the moment. We all have to start somewhere. Some people can dive right in and some people…

Thanks, I might give these a try. The dough sounds similar to the Fathead pizza crust, which we love.

Frankly if your carbs are low, you are happy with the way you are eating, and you are losing weight I don't think you should worry about it. There is a decent size subgroup of keto people who do higher protein and lower fat than LCHF ketoers do. They are often referred to as "optimal ketogenic living." I don't do this but…

Yes, I did it once about two years ago. I won, but I found it to be a very stressful month. I haven't done it again. There were fewer options at the time, though. Glad to hear they have longer timeline available now.

LAMB PATTIES * 1 pound ground lamb * 1/3 cup whole milk plain greek yogurt (use one with lowest carb count, I use Kalona Supernatural or Fage Total) * 1 tablespoon coconut flour * 1 tablespoon golden flaxseed meal * 1.5 teaspoons ground cumin * 1 teaspoon sea salt * 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper * 2 tablespoons (or…

I think Kelly's story is great and I have read several of her blog posts. She did in fact lose 120 lbs. on low carb, but then moved to zero carb in maintenance. I may end up like her. I'm not ready to do zero carb mentally yet, but I think it is a great WOE.

You looked great in the before pic, but WOWZA!!! You have an awesome figure! Congrats!

There's nothing wrong with 30-40 g carb/day if that is sustainable for you. For the vast majority of people that is still ketogenic, if that is your goal. There does seem to be a bit of a sentiment lately that you aren't doing "real" keto unless your carbs are 20 g or under, but that's not what Phinney and Volek say is…

Sounds great, thank you!

It sounds like you are doing the right thing, researching and finding options that will work for you now. I have found low carb subs for most of the things you mentioned. Since you are doing low carb at this point rather than keto, you might try posting in The Low Carber Daily Forum group in addition for ideas, There is a…

Great progress!

I bought something from them that should be arriving today (either flour or bread mix). However, I don't particularly plan on eating it myself, but I will probably try a bit to see how it tastes. I bought it for my 12.5 year old son who is starting to eat low carb, as he isn't being as strict as DH or I. I do buy ThinSlim…

Nuts are easy to overeat so can cause carb creep and calorie creep. If you portion them out and eat an amount that fits in your daily carb allowance you should be fine. The only way to know is to try and see. Personally, I have pretty much had to cut out nuts this past month to get my carbs and calories down to get back…

Exactly. You need to be patient. Unless you are an exercise instructor or something you do need to give it a rest for a couple more weeks at least until you become keto-adapted. In your free time you gain, I highly recommend that you read either The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance and/or The Art and Science…

The gelatin is pretty much pure protein. 7 g gelatin (about 1 tbsp.) has 6 g protein and 12 g collagen hydrolysate (about 2 tbsp.) has 11 g protein. So on a per weight basis you can't do much better. Whether a person wants to consume large quantities is another question, but I know some people use use several tablespoons a…

Since the Atkins bars use maltitol as the sugar alcohol, you really should subtract only 1/2 of the sugar alcohol at most to get net carbs when consuming them. The net carb count on the box of the Atkins bars is a bit disingenuous. Maltitiol is pretty much the worst sugar alcohol and has a high glycemic index, but the…

If your highest day is still under 50 g that is considered keto (nutritional ketosis) per Phinney and Volek. Whether you personally remain in ketosis at 50 g carbs/day you would need to check.

I like Old Home or Parkers. I find them in the refrigerated health food/organic section of my local grocery store. You need to store them in the fridge, but the benefit is that the oil is already mixed in. If you but natural peanut butter at room temp you will need to spend considerable effort in mixing in the oil before…

I think you need to be careful eating a lot of Brazil nuts on a regular basis. My understanding is that over-consumption may lead to selenium toxicity. http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2007/06/25/how-dangerous-i/

I'm not diabetic but I do eat low carb/keto for insulin resistance. Have you read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution? He's a type 1 diabetic himself and is a real pioneer in using low carb diet for both type 1 and type 2. His website is http://www.diabetes-book.com/ and there is some good info on there. He has a monthly…

As usmcmp says, "thinspiration" or "thinspo" is usually associated with images related to the proana movement (promotion of anorexia nervosa as a positive lifestyle choice). It is not a good term to use unless one is trying to promote eating disorders.

The Blood Sugar 101 website had a lot of links with metformin info as well: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045911.php Towards the bottom of the page are links to studies showing metformin may be protective for cancer, heart disease, and "lowers risk of all kinds of fatal outcomes."

Ok, here's kind of a interesting study about metformin: http://jaha.ahajournals.org/content/3/6/e001202.full It says mice given metformin lost weight and had less atherosclerosis than control mice. The kicker is they gave the mice getting metformin a high fat diet (it had plenty of crappy ingredients though it did have…

You mean gastric upset from the metformin? Did you try the ER/XR (extended release) version or just the regular? All my gastric symptoms went away as soon as I switched to ER. I also had IBS prior to starting low carb so I got a double whammy with the regular metformin. I have had no side effects with the metformin ER,…

Here's one article on benefits of metformin: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/280725.php I will look for more later, my lunch break just ended.

Same for me. I eat very low carb but it is nearly impossible to cut out naturally occurring sugars completely. Over the past month I have had between 4 g to 21 g sugar/day, with an average of 10 g/day.
