Four pages and no one has pointed out that couscous isn't a grain? MFP, I am disappoint.

I just don't bother arguing. Being right isn't important to me. Being healthy is. So as long as what I'm doing is working, I'll just keep doing it and people can say about it whatever they will. I let my 60lb weight loss, 47bpm resting heart rate, ~100 cholesterol figure, completed triathlon, 2x bodyweight deadlift and…

When you classify something as a 'guilty pleasure' what you are really saying is "I consider other people's opinion of this band to be more important than my own, so I feel I have to excuse myself for liking them."

I think if you are covering enough miles it's a good idea. By 'enough miles' I'd say enough to wear out a pair of shoes in 3 to 6 months. Shoes have a shelf life, as well as a running life. If you're able to wear a single pair of shoes for 18 months before they are worn out, then you're wasting your money buying 2 pairs at…

nm, should have read your post that says you have exactly that...

Do you have a calendar reminder set up to come back and check?

Everyone I know that has done the challenge has donated to ALS, and then also done the challenge as a way of continuing the publicity for the cause.

I like my beard. My spouse does not. She knows that eventually the day will come when it irritates me and I shave it off. In the mean time she lets me have my fun.

Ahahaha, people are always so gutted when they find out you have to work for it. "What, no magic pill? Damn." Congrats!

IIFYM is just a way of structuring macro-nutrients within a balanced diet. It doesn't purport to tell you what to eat, just to determine your protein/fat/carb amounts. By all means read about IIFYM, but also learn about balancing your diet for adequate intake of micro-nutrients and fiber. They are two parts of the same…

If you aren't the only one that has done this, I fear for the future of humanity.

Why would I pay for a phone bill, when work is already paying for one for me? The loss of phone porn browsing is hardly earth shattering. At least for me. YMMV.
-
My cell phone contains confidential work data, and corporate policy is that it must be locked. In fact, if I tried to take the lock off, the management software would take a conniption fit and probably wipe the phone, or at least cut off my access to the corporate network. If I give out the password, and work found out,…

A coach is good advice. You will likely be programming terrible form if you are trying to practice while still fearful. Ten weeks to go from terrified of water to a first triathlon is an aggressive goal, and I don't believe you can make it without professional training. Be sure to practice in open water if that's where the…

My response - "You call it luck, I call it cycling 50 miles a week, running 15 miles a week, swimming two miles a week, and lifting three times a week. Tom-ay-to, tom-ah-to."

And that's why I added 'controversial' - I knew someone would say this. "This is the sort of nonsense up with which I shall not put" - in the words of (probably someone other than) Sir. Winston Churchill. Even so, with all these alleged grammar enthusiasts on the internet, you'd expect at least some of them to fall…

I think there is a balance to be struck. Language is an evolving construct by it's nature. Changes to language that make it more expressive and/or accessible are generally positive. I do hope, however, that today's acronym culture becomes an offshoot of language, constrained to brief electronic communication, rather than…

You may have misunderstood my post (unclear due to lack of tone in the written word). I'm not referring to anyone as a freak. I appreciate good writing as much as the next gender unspecified individual. I also find it difficult to not make certain assumptions about someone's education and overall intelligence based on…

Funny thing is most self confessed grammar freaks are really just freaks about a few basic rules. I rarely see people correcting split infinitives or hanging prepositions, or other more advanced/controversial rules. I rarely see someone point out an incorrectly used semicolon. I conclude that they are not grammar freaks.…

First up, you need a calorie surplus to gain muscle, so you probably aren't eating enough. Next up, you need to be doing resistance training, not just cardio. How are you working out? Are you lifting weights? Are you following a prebuilt program, or winging it? Which program? How many sets/reps? How long have you been…

Bad run - Went out for a 40k bike ride, and immediately followed it up with a 15k run (training for a tri). Only took 24oz of gatorade on the bike ride, didn't take anything on the run. It was a very, very hot, very, very humid day. Needless to say I 'bonked', ended up dehydrated, stopped sweating, got confused and ended…

I feel a bit like I'm talking to a brick wall. I agree that starting outside is best if that's your plan. I am not trying to argue otherwise. But not everyone has that option, and not everyone knows that running is going to stick, and not everyone lives in a climate that would necessarily allow them to start running…

You obviously missed or ignored the point about my thermal running gear. I run in all weather - now. But when I first started out, I wasn't sure it would stick. I wasn't going to spend hundreds of bucks on running gear that may have ended up unused in the closet, and I didn't want to wait until spring to get started. So I…

I started in the dead of a Missouri winter. At that time I did not have the hundreds of dollars of thermal running gear I now own, now that I know I enjoy running. People have reasons for what they do and how they do them. Don't presume.

It can be done on treadmill or outside. It's ultimately just a way of developing a base level of running fitness using run/walk intervals. Note that when done on a treadmill, the transition to outdoor running is still a challenge. Took me a couple of weeks to go from running 5k on a TM to running 5k on the road.
