I guess I am "much" rather than "slightly." Ran my first full marathon at age 60. Also soloed for my private pilot's license that year. 69 now and running halves regularly.

I'm with Carson. My first mile is my warm up. It's slow. Short walk as a cool down since I don't want to be panting and sweating too much in the house. My first mile is also when I run through all my possible excuses not to run that day . . . am I tired, am I hung over, am I too fat, am I risking injury, maybe I should run…

Yes and this is so counterintuitive. If listening to your body is the guideline, and if your body is saying this feels great, it's confusing. It must be the endorphins.

I too was told every other day. I have been using RunKeepers to train for a half and it tells me to do 4 miles on Saturday and a long run, increasing weekly, on Sunday. It works fine. No problem.

69, running at 11 to 12 minutes mile. 19 miles per week. Helps weight loss and feels good.

I do that . . . January through December The problem is in January the gym will fill up with New Year's resolutions, clogging equipment and creating wait times. Higher density is compounded by the above.

I've always thought it was funny and certainly inconvenient. The drop off toward the end of January toward march is especially funny. I noticed it yesterday too. I think folks were working out in preparation for a Xmas pig out. Another phenomenon of health clubs is the discounted sale of life memberships just before they…

There is a big disparity between exercise calories that MFP provides and RunKeepers. The difference is over 100 calories for a short 3 mile run. Mysterious . . .

Exercise (endorphins) momentarily helps symptoms of the depression but does not address the disease. Therapy will. It will take a few months.

Thanks guys. I bought the book. I'll see how it goes. Deadlifts look like an invitation to back injury. Form looks really important.

Nothing. My gf left me to go to work without a peso. Two $100 bills that are worth nothing here in Central Mexico!

Unable to develop the discipline required to be a runner, Chad, who is a little on the plump side and feeling unhealthy, is acting out in frustration.

This had me re-evaluating my thought that running is not a team sport no matter how many running clubs or pace groups you work with. it all comes down to yourself. Maybe not though.
-
I feel your pain Lori. I spend a lot of time in a slummy area in Mexico . . . my small gated subdivision is the only safe area. Loop after loop after loop. I don't have a solution for you except wait for Spring :). there's always the treadmill Ugh!

It's been 8 years. My doc says the running damaged the roots of the nail and it will never fall off. Black, ugly but hanging on by a nail. I have more than once tried to pull it out, but I don't have the courage.
-
I tried training with a pace group for two years to do the long runs on Saturdays. I hated not being able to run faster or slower when I wanted to and I especially hated having to talk to strangers next to me. I guess I have issues :)

Garmin Forerunner 305. It works as expected. I wish it had a lighted screen for early morning runs in the dark. Haven't tried downloading and probably won't. Gives me mileage, pace and total time, which is all I use.
-
Chant "duration over intensity." it works when the 20-somethings streak past me at 9 minute miles.
-
I do halfs and fulls, but I don't race in any of them. I just run them. I enjoy seeing where I finish in my dinosaur late-60's age group. It's usually in the middle somewhere. Winning is not my objective. Enjoying the conditioning and being alive when those around me are dying are the rewards. :)

Don't be surprised if you hurt even more two days following the workout. That's normal. I agree you will be fine by sunday.
-
I'd say if you can lose 101 pounds, you can do pretty much anything. Good job!!
-
Doesn't this thread violate the TOS?
-
You will be fine for a half then. Take one week off . . . no running whatsoever. Then run whatever feels comfortable to finish up. You are already ready for a half.

"just a bridge" - it's a veritable mountain! :-) Yes, I suspect that's a bridge and I'll have a better idea when I scout the course on Saturday." [/quote] I've run that one half a dozen times. It's flat as a pancake. Just a bridge (you cross twice though :) )
-
"Here's the elevation profile of the Half this Sunday: http://runlongbeach.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Half-Marathon-Elevation-Chart-v2.jpg Promise, there is a hill. Well, sort of a hill! :-) " Isn'i the "hill" in the long Beach half just a bridge?

I wouldn't do the marathon. You will hate it and never want to do another. Stick with halves and await motivation next year or later. marathons are not for everybody. that's why they are so special.

You hat Friday nights because you can't have wine.

This may take too much mental toughness for me to complete.

Count the elapsed time; then switch to counting the time remaining; then elapsed; then remaining; until you want to quit.
