For runs over one hour it's jelly beans for me. Every color. Yum!

I alternate every 3 weeks between running at sea level (Venice CA) and 7,300 ft. (Mexico City). Therefore I use time. Pace is slower and distance is shorter at altitude, so I limit myself to 40 minutes of running.

Old person's perspective . . . I weight train three times a week. I like doing traps, lats, back, chest and arms only. Why? Because at 70 I don't look stooped or any of that other stuff. I want the lean runner's look too, but not at the cost of posture. I'm only running 14 miles per week. Hard to know what to do.

I use Galloway; run 5 or 6 and walk 1, depending on how I feel. he says it avoids injury. It's been true for me.

Sleep is overrated. Next time stay up on purpose. You will see.

I ran my first full at 60 and lots of halfs since then. I'm 70.

I just ran across two earbuds that synch with RunKeeper and contain HRM's in the earbuds. Not as accurate as the chest strap though. SMS BioSport ($150, not wireless, meaning you need to carry your smartphone) and Jabra Sports Pulse ($200, wireless and gives you a voice check of your hr).

Apropos drinking . . . drink when you are thirsty http://www.wsj.com/articles/ease-up-on-the-water-during-that-marathon-1424715632

Might as well get a colonoscopy.

Here's an article whose advice I would not follow. It says better results for weight maintenance by running on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Maybe bodies in Belgium are different.…

I thought the Los Angeles Leggers and the L.A. Roadrunners were a good idea until i read the recent thread here about marathon preparation. They both take you from couch to marathon in six months using Galloway's run-walk program. Now i doubt both. I bought Galloway's"Running: Getting Started" and his "Training Programs".…

I don't want to hijack the thread, but vcphil, how do you run so much in Minnesota? I use to live in Bemidji and brrrrrrr; so cold it's dangerous some days.
-
I'm using it. Synchs well with MFP. I don't like the training programs but it's OK for keeping a record of runs. There are probably better out there.
-
My experience is like STrooper's. I started at age 60 and ran a marathon in 5+hours after six months training with the L.A. Leggers. It was a run-walk program and worked for me. I'm trying to to do the same things in 2015. We shall see.

Galloway says pretty much the same thing. Burning glycogen in the first 15 minutes, then your body starts burning fat. He says long slow runs are better for fat burning because they are aerobic and permit fat burning. Too fast and there is insufficient oxygen and body switches to glycogen again.

Thanks for the advice.

RunKeeper is free and feeds results to MFP.

NorthCountyDreamer said it just right. I am turning 70 in 2 weeks. Ran this morning for the first time in six months due to injury. SF Marathon in July 2015. I can't imagine not running. During the layoff, spent 3 days a week in the gym doing upper body and really good results. Weight work also feels very good but running…

One thing I have discovered is side dishes. Order them a la carte. My local sports bar has a fat/carbo loaded menu of burger, fries, nachos, etc., but sides of a chicken breasts, strawberries, salad and other healthy choices.
-
Since no one else is saying it, I will. Running in the dark scares me because of the sprained ankle or other injury risk. Could result in several weeks of layoff. Seems to me the risk for me is higher than the reward. But younger eyes may have less risk.

very unscientific approach but i wait until it's pain free plus one week. It's a annoying, frustrating, but works for me. And the wait until it's pain free is longer as you age (now 5 months for a ligament). But you can use the time for upper body training.

In the sixth month of no running with this injury. Finally getting normal. This stuff takes a looooong time :(

7,000 calorie cheat day? Yikes.

"A few glasses of wine" IS a bottle. A 750 ml bottle is five 5 ounce glasses. 4 glasses of five ounces is a glass short of a bottle. It's too much per night.

2 seconds . . . from the bed to the desk.

Exactly. Let's see that diary!

I'm 69 and ran my first at 60. Doing another next year at 70. Lots of halfs,10ks in between. Happy to trade thoughts.

Age 69. Running 18 miles per week. L.A. marathon in April. No problems.
