"Comparison is the thief of joy"
Sonic Death Monkey is so right. On the other hand, Under Armour just acquired MFP. Under Armour says it wants "a beachhead within a community [MFP] of people who want to be measured." Under Amour thinks clothes that measure (electronic apparel) are in our future, rather than wearable devices. We seem conflicted. We spend…

Toenails
This weekend a toenail fell off ten years after I did something wrong while running the L.A. Marathon. My doctor said running damaged the roots and caused it to stop growing and not to worry about it. But 10 years? Is it a shoe issue?

Clif Bars

Marathon at 60: "Go out slow, then back off"
is this guy's advice. He still finished at 4:44. I would love that time. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/03/sports/running-the-new-york-city-marathon-2014-at-age-60.html?ref=todayspaper

The Ethics of Running in a lower age group
If you want to compete against younger runners, and can generally outperform them, is it ethical to enter a race in a younger bracket? Chuck Klosterman's answer in the New York Times is unintelligible to me, but that's because I am old:…

Breakfast
Standing in line this morning at the coffee shop. Woman in front of me about 60 pounds overweight. Ordered her coffee and a 12 ounce container of yogurt with nuts . . . good start for the day. Then she ordered a blueberry muffin. Then she ordered a large piece of coffee cake. Oops! Tastes good, fills you up. But with…

Exercise Addiction
In another useless piece of research, of which there are volumes in academia, the more you run does not indicate your are addicted to running. You can read it, and, if you can figure out what it means, please tell us. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4154578/

Gettng out the door
Yesterday's winner of the Boston was on the Mike and Mike ESPN show this morning. He said the hardest part of marathon training is getting out the door. So true . . .

Who belongs here?
After reading thee 50 mile threads, I am wondering who belongs here? Is running 15-20 miles per week long distance running? Sounds like not.

Birds and Heart Beats
Read a story recently that measured the duration of the lives of birds. The story concluded that birds have a fixed (within a range) number of heartbeats in their lives. They can't outlive the range. If that's true of humans, is anyone worried?

Running in the rain
It's been raining here in Los Angeles. Not the downpour the media has been describing. Just a regular rainstorm. Couple of inches in 24 hours. I decided to run yesterday during the rain. Regular half-marathon tee shirt, running shorts, socks and shoes . . . nothing to cover up. Only 4 miles, but it was great! Drenched at…

Is stretching harmful? What to do for Warm Up?
I have read lately that stretching (either before or after a run) may increase injury. I only walk fast or jog slowly as a warmup and as a cool down. What do you do and why?

Fnding the Satellte for your GPS
I used to wait 2 or 3 minutes for my Garmin to find the satellite for a run. Now I lay the thing on a fencepost while I warm up and it picks up the satellite in less than 30 seconds. Apparently the movement on my wrist delayed the process.

Correct breathing
My 30 year old friend, who runs 8 minute miles keeps telling her 68 year old friend (me) that I should be breathing through my nose. My body, running at 11.5, is desperate for oxygen when I follow her advice. Is she trying to kill me or giving me good running advice?

Yakking it up with yor personal trainer
I don't see personal trainers doing half the training in 45 minutes that a client could do alone. I think clients, by and large, like to talk and talk and talk with their trainers, even during exercise sets. I don't get it. I imagine they go home and say they had a great workout.
-
Isolation versus comdination movements
A personal trainer at my gym says he no longer does isolation workouts, e.g. curls, shoulder presses, etc. He says squats, pushups and other movements that involve several muscles groups are better. Most exercise videos agree with him. What do you think?
-
What is your warm-up for a training run?
I confess to 5 or 6 lunges, a few calf raises and walking around waiting for my my Garmin to catch the satellite. Is a warm-up important? What do you do?
-
What time of day do you run?
I like early morning when the sky is just turning gray before sunrise. Of course a couple of glasses of wine the night before makes it harder. Later in the day I am less motivated, searching for excuses, or tired. When do you like to do your training runs?

Waist, hand or back for carrying your liquid?
Where do you carry your water, Gatorade or whatever . . . waist, hand or back? Why do you prefer it there? I have forever used a waist belt but it moves around a lot and loosens often. What is your preference?

Music or no music
My marathon training group says no music because of the dangers in urban environments from traffic, etc. I've never tried music. Does it help on long runs? Or does it distract from training?
