  • I walk around with a 750 ml water bottle all day and refill it at least 3 times. Sometimes I add lemon to make it interesting. If I get super bored of it, I'll buy a can of sparkling water. But I usually don't have an issue, unless I forget my water bottle. Then I fall way short.
  • Congratulations on reaching that first step toward quitting! I quit a year ago as of yesterday. I smoked for 10 years, a pack or more per day. It's not easy for everyone, but it's worth it for everyone. I found it helpful to come up with a list of reasons why I wanted to quit. You can't come up with reasons to NOT quit -…
  • I found it hard and weird to give up being fat. Nothing fits like I expect it to - even when it's the right size. Getting used to the changes in body shape and what I see in the mirror has been the hardest. You don't have to give up foods to lose weight, just moderate how much of it you eat.
  • It calculates your range based on 65 and 85% of your maximum HR so you stay in the aerobic range. It isn't necessarily bad to exercise above your range, but your entire workout shouldn't be that high. A lot of things can influence your HR - including meds (albuterol inhalers, stimulants, cold/cough medicines), heat,…
  • Making obesity a diagnosable condition means that it becomes a treatable condition for doctors and nurses. Some health insurance companies are also incentivizing weight loss, preventive care, and health-improving measures - without drugs. There are already diet pills abounding, and desperate people don't need a doctor with…
  • Whoops! Sorry, I misunderstood your 120lb-in-a-250lb-woman statement! My bad! But yeah, this is the perfect example of why it's important that the medical community has deemed obesity a disease. Her organs are working harder, certainly. You can really see the difference in the livers, too. I wish there were a posterior…
  • Really? It's poop and gas. You're full of it too (no pun intended ) just like everyone else. Everybody poops. lol. And no, the bodies are not the same minus the "padding." The obese woman has cardiomegaly (which resulted from her body requiring her heart to pump harder to perfuse blood to her excess tissues),…
  • Haha  Have you tried them? They're not your mom's boca burgers. These are soy-free, and essentially veggie patties. They taste nothing like meat and aren't supposed to mimic meat at all. No rubbery texture, just crispy, beety goodness  They can be baked or fried, but I doubt they'd hold up on a grill... unless…
  • There's also quarter pound beet burgers (vegetarian). They're kind of like beet latkes and they're so freakin good. Recipe found at http://www.theppk.com/2012/02/quarter-pounder-beet-burger/
  • I wash and peel them, then cut them into wedges and toss with olive oil, thyme or rosemary, salt and pepper and roast them at 400F for 20 minutes (or a little longer) in a foil packet. I'm addicted to them!
  • Swordfish steak, sweet potato circles, and cherries
  • You are amazing! Just- WOW! Really inspirational.
  • Your total cholesterol could have gone up if your HDL increased but your LDL stayed the same. The total cholesterol isn't nearly as important as the individual HDL and LDL numbers. If you have the genetic mutation causing your liver to produce excess LDL and deficient HLD, then that is how your body ineffectively removes…
  • And D3 helps with cholesterol synthesis!
  • Careful with potassium. It's not good to substitute potassium chloride (a salt substitute) for sodium chloride (table salt) in all people with hypertension, and it's dangerous for people with kidney disease because their kidneys can't filter it out into the urine. Before adding a potassium supplement or using potassium…
  • Hi! You're welcome! Some people's livers produce higher amounts of LDL than others, and produce lower amounts of HDL, for unknown reasons, or due to a genetic defect of a specific chromosome. I've been blessed with the same family history! I'm trying to fight it as best as I can and for as long as I can with exercise and a…
  • I'm willing to bet that your change in exercise has been a part of this change! Cholesterol is controlled by both exercise and diet. Increasing your physical activity (by 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) and getting your heart rate up into the 65-85% of your max HR zone increases your HDL (good) cholesterol by reducing the…
  • Yes! Pay for health now, save in the long-run; or, buy junk now and pay for illness and obesity-related diseases later. Exercise doesn't have to cost a ton either. Good running shoes and a good sports bra (for us ladies) = $75. Then, run on trails. No gym fee required.
  • USDA did a study on this a year ago... Follow the link to check out the tables and stats if you're interested. http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/eib-economic-information-bulletin/eib96.aspx#.UcSB678b7ww The findings of the study were: In terms of price per calorie, foods higher in calories tend to be less expensive than…
  • I went to the doctor's office today for my TDaP vaccine and the medical assistant didn't recognize me. I've been going there for 10 years and hadn't seen her since before I started losing weight. I was pretty shocked at her response when she asked how I did it and I told her diet & exercise. She scrunched up her face all…
  • NSV = Non-Scale Victory, so something that affirmed your progress without hopping on the scale
  • There's a lot of debate around tropical oils - palm and coconut oil, specifically. They are considered saturated fats because they are solid at room temperature. However, most plant based saturated fats are made from medium chain fatty acids (which are easier for your body to use and it uses them more quickly), versus…
  • Oh my god, dying here! lmao We keep two separate containers....
  • Your journey is about you. Your weight loss can't be about anyone else, not even your husband. Sure, someone can be an inspiration, but from what you describe, your husband is far from inspirational. You can try telling him that he's being a bully when he continually says things you have told him are hurtful. He can…
  • Study break snack: Belgian endive leaves filled with vegetarian goat cheese, dried cranberries, pear, and walnuts, drizzled with honey.
  • So the cardiovascular system knows when someone's heart rate reaches 150 while running versus yoga? I'm pretty sure cardio is any exercise that gets your heart rate to reach 65-85% of your max HR. If HR is "bunk," how do you objectively measure intensity?
  • If you're doing Bikram or vinyasa flow -fast sequences in a hot environment- yeah, you're gonna get your HR up. So a HRM is actually useful. Unless by "different energy pathways" you mean chi. In that case you're right- HRMs don't do chi
  • Barney's butter has a similar texture to cashew butter - it's thinner than peanut butter, but not gritty like other almond butters, and pretty sticky. I liked it a lot.
