I ran 3 & 1/2 days after my first half and got cramps in my calves after 2 miles. Waited another 3 & 1/2 and was able to run normally again (8 miles or so). But I pushed a little hard at the end of my half. I use Endomondo and it shows my PB for almost every distance in the last half of the run. Anyway, not sure if a short…

Not nearly as recently experienced as some of your other responders, but I will take a shot at oversimplifying this (I have a gift for that). Picking up the pace is just that; it's not like you are going to sprint or do something that requires a radical change in mechanics. I ran my first half not all that long ago and my…

I have only run the half once but I am pretty convinced it will be my favorite. I do not run competitively as far as speed goes and I can't dedicate enough time to try to do anything longer. My exercise runs are generally 6-10 miles.

Awesome! Congrats!

People with kidney problems should stay away from a lot of things and should consult their doctors. Dehydration can cause kidney problems. As I said earlier, consult your doctor. Problems with almost all medicines happen, but they are rare.

With all due respect, that is something of a contradiction in terms according to the rheumatologists I have seen. OTC meds are generally right at the bottom of the range for reducing inflammation and are often below the range for an adult over 150 pounds. The doc told me there is no point in taking 200 mg ibuprofen tablets…

The 95% figure is suspect at best: http://www.nytimes.com/1999/05/25/health/95-regain-lost-weight-or-do-they.html It came from a study over 50 years ago of 100 atypical people. Obese patients who lost the weight on a VLC diet in a hospital setting and then were sent home with a printed diet to follow. I am not saying the…

I ran my first half not long ago and the very next time I ran, a few days later, I got calf cramps. Speaking to more experienced runners, it may have to do with the intramuscular glycogen; the glycogen stores can be replenished fairly quickly, but the intramuscular glycogen can take days. I tend to skip water stations or…

A little more (and maybe bumping it will get you more feedback also)... I saw my regular doc a couple of days ago (not the specialist, but still very knowledgeable) and asked her about osteo and running. She runs and is very pro running. She said that it is generally true that if you aren't getting swelling it's okay to…

Walking at Disney can be taxing, which is why I would pick Sunday over Saturday; just to be more ready on Sunday if finish time is important. A lot of the walking ends up being standing in line, which I find harder on my legs than moving faster.
-
If your time is really important to you, Sunday in the park is the only option, IMO. What time does the run start? I think you would probably be okay to do some park walking 3 hours after the start (around 2 to run and around 1 to recover).

I have arthritis. A little in shoulders, hands and feet, worst in lower back (bad enough to show up on X Rays). I have had the cortisone shots in shoulders and back before and that helped a lot. Mostly I just take ibuprofen, 600 mg at a time. This is on doctor's advice and the doc also told me that if there is some pain…

OK, after reading that I would have to agree pretty strongly that it will not happen anytime soon. But there is one outside factor to consider - the freak of nature. By pure chance or adaptation, there me be someone who takes up running and finds it easier to go faster for longer than anyone has before because something is…

The problem is not being a yo yo dieter, it is that one time when you just do the single yo (up)... I am also 54 and have done the yo yo thing a few times over the years. One odd thing you have to consider is that staying at a stable weight is actually a somewhat recent development for humans and we are designed for yo yo,…

Even if you don't have shoe $ in the budget right now, I would advise shopping at a running store. You will come away knowing how much you need to budget and a bit more educated about shoes. Ask lots of questions about why they are recommending specific shoes if they don't tell you without having to ask. If I were to go to…
-
I second the shoe advice; should have mentioned that. I went to a store where they measure each foot independently twice (sitting and standing so they can see how much the arch falls), take you outside and watch you run, suggest specific shoes and have you run while they watch in different ones. I spent more than I ever…

I am 54, just started running (used to run many years ago, but under 5 miles at a time) at the beginning of the year, did a 5k in April and then just kept increasing and running pretty regularly. I did my first half a few days ago at 2:08:25. So it is definitely doable. Also lost over 50 pounds; if you are already in…

Yes, I was looking for comments as a lot of it went over my head. I got the gist of it, but wasn't sure if maybe it was being more specific than I thought if I understood some of the more detailed bits. I also wasn't sure it really said that the 31.4 number was wrong, yet it was very significant to me that no mention of it…

In this thread: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1111573-carb-loading-before-a-race-when-to-do-it someone points to an article that says for a half it really isn't necessary but can't hurt. That is sort of what I think about fueling during the half. But when I make sure I have loaded up the day before for long…

What is your take on this article? http://www.gssiweb.org/Article/sse-59-fat-metabolism-during-exercise-new-concepts It cites a lot more recent studies (very long list of references), but from my layman's reading (eyes glazed over well before the end) it seems inconclusive as far as establishing a rate. Would like to hear…

I am another little or nothing, but I just ran my first half a few days ago. I did take a few sips of water at mile 9. On my training runs, many of which were 10+, I rarely took water and never any gels/beans/food. I do make sure I get plenty of carbs the day before. A half will not deplete your glycogen stores; I just…

GRR! Typo - I am 33/69! I would not be smiling if it were 33/59!! :noway: Anyway, here is an article on it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/10054519/Waist-to-height-ratio-more-accurate-than-BMI.html I hate typos! I wish I could go back and change that post...
-
As far as BMI goes, in some parts of the world they are pushing a much simpler system - the largest abdominal circumference (usually around the naval; a little more than pants size) should be less than half your height. Make sense to me, but I am 33/59 now.

I think we compare against the wrong number. If you are looking at losing a lot of weight, I think losing some "not fat" along with the fat is unavoidable. Some of it is even beneficial; you don't need the extra skin and connecting tissue. The flip side is that I think it can lead to setting goals like the previous poster…
-
I wonder how these numbers are really supposed to correlate. You were told 30.12% BF and can calculate that. But of the weight that isn't fat, how much is truly LBM? Does water count? Whatever is in your digestive tract? Skin? If you lose 100#, you will end up with a smaller body that holds less water, less skin (maybe not…
-
One question I have is if/how you can determine how much LBM loss is muscle loss. In my case, I think I lost about 42 pounds of fat and 13 pounds that was not fat. When I post those numbers, I often get jumped on by advocates of slower loss and/or more resistance training that say I lost 13 pounds of muscle. I don't think…

From my personal experience, readings and discussions, if you train well for a half marathon you will not suffer glycogen depletion even if you take nothing during the run. I have not run a full marathon, but my understanding is that nearly everyone but the elite distance runners will suffer glycogen depletion during a…

Someone else told me that courses always are laid out so that the minimum possible distance you can run if you stay right against the inside on every turn and never zig zag is at or over the stated distance or no record would ever be recognized. So if you meander a little and swing wide on many of the turns you will be…

I suspect the time window varies widely and that one of the variables with the most impact is glycogen reserves. I have been distance running as my primary exercise so I have good glycogen reserves (yeah, I am a special snowflake  unique, like everyone else). On any day but a really long run day, I think I can…
