  • Thomas's bagel thins are wonderful! 110 calories and you can put anything you want on them. Jam, hummus, cream cheese, laughing cow cheese. The possibilities are endless. Finally a bagel option that's healthy!
  • Get a doctor's note! Getting the motivation to go to the gym is hard enough. You don't need to be discouraged by a bunch of people that aren't there for the right reasons. But in the same note, I'm a big fan of going to the gym. So maybe explain to your doctor what's up, get your excuse to leave that place, and then find…
  • My ticker says 35 lbs lost but, I'm about 2 lbs away from 150lbs total. (woo!!) It's taken me a long time to take it off, but I'm a big fan of small achievable goals and no timelines. I want a forever change, not a right now change. So more than anything, the best advice I can give you... is listen to you body. When I…
  • i agree with everyone else. Primary culprits may be sodium and being too predictable in your food choices. Sodium is known for holding onto water. Ugh Water Weight! But 1-2 days a week of overpassing your daily amount isn't going to kill your goals. But 4-5 days might. So maybe be more conscious of that and see if it makes…
  • You are fantastic! Love your goal and attitude so much. Make sure to post on the these boards lots and lots. Because with infectious enthusiasm and confidence like yours, we're all bound to achieve our goals. Thanks for reminding us to laugh at ourselves and set FUN goals! :D
  • I agree. Protein is the way to go. Especially after an evening workout post-dinner. I usually do a small protein shake within 15-30 minutes after and it fills me right up. And as a bonus it's good for building endurance and healing those muscles after an especially hearty workout.
  • I'm considering training for a half this summer too. And this is the website my friends keep pointing me to. http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm Hope it helps!

  • I would change up your workout routine. Change the types of workouts, switch the days around, etc. Your body has probably found your workout routine predictable. I can't speak on your food intake, but as far as workouts go I found that for myself my body reacts more when I try something different. And I'm a big advocate of…
  • I like sculpt classes. They build leaner muscle and the cardio isn't usually too strenuous. They can at least prep you for the higher velocity classes like zumba and what not. The instructors are usually really good about modifying movements if you're stuggling. And spin class is good too because you really determine your…
  • I use the mapmyrun app or website. It tracks times and routes pretty accurately as far as I've experienced.
  • Don't worry. You're not alone. I keep my food logs private because I know I don't eat as clean as I should lol ... but I guess in the end I'm okay with that. I continue to lose weight (as it seems you have too!) I just lose it slow. I enjoy food too much to give it all up for a quick fix. I don't always deprive myself. I'm…
  • The truest measure of calories burned is going to be with a heart rate monitor. I can't speak for bodybugg or endomondo as I've never used them, but when I was struggling to understand how many calories I'd burned, I didn't discover how off I was until I'd bought an HRM. The gym equipment/mfp estimated too high or too low.…
  • Unfortunately, I have had the luck of having not so great knees (genetics and being super heavy for most of my life). So I can appreciate your concerns. I've found that diversity in workouts is the best bet to keep my knees from getting too sore or swelling up. Too much repetition in movements (which often occurs with dvds…
  • I'm kind of a newbie at all this protein shake stuff. I just started last week but I'm really enjoying GNC's pro performance amp. I use a scoop with 4 ounces of water post workouts. Fills me up and it actually tastes pretty good. Very little sugar and fat. No clumping. I've heard it's pricey in comparison to other…
  • Sugar free gum! Not as delicious as your favorite snack items I'm sure, but it keeps your mouth busy and most sticks are only 5 calories. And brushing your teeth works too. I never want to eat after I've gotten that minty fresh taste in my mouth.
  • I did my first 5k a little over a year ago. I wanted to prove to myself that in spite of all the "i'll never be a runner" comments I'd told myself over the years, I could do it. I trained about three months prior. Completed it 43 minutes in wind and snow (and it was May for Pete's sake!). My feet were like frozen bricks as…
  • If you're a big fan of cereal and don't mind spending extra money on all natural deliciousness, meandgoji.com makes custom artisanal cereal. I just happened upon it in an online news article about how "design your own" or customizable products like chocolate, cereal, etc, are becoming huge. With meandgoji you can choose…

  • You should be SO proud of yourself! I twitch at the thought of doing a half marathon. The event itself (running 13.2 miles) doesn't bother me so much. Sure it's intimidating for a lowly 5-8k runner like myself ;) but the training seems so much worse. 210 miles?? Holy crap, girl. That's amazing. I'm just afraid I'd be bored…
  • I think cheat days are fine as long as they are sporadic and infrequent. It's good to keep your body guessing. And in my personal opinion, if you want your new healthy eating habits to be a way of life rather than a diet, it's important to be real and let yourself make bad food decisions every once in a while. Ice cream is…
  • Treadmills are the devil once you get used to running outside. There's so much more to occupy/distract you and so many more goals to set when you're outside. "one more block"...or "just get to that stop sign". Treadmill running is tough because all you've got is the clock and mileage slowly ticking away... So if your…
  • I hear your frustration. I spent a whole month working my *kitten* off 600-1000 calories every day and was trying to eat all my calories as they all tell you too, but I was seeing zero change on the scale or in measurements. I finally had to take a step back and reevaluate. Apparently that was just what I needed because…
  • Thank you SO much everyone! I definitely feel like I'm eating enough (usually only 50-100 calories below goal including workout calories). But I'm probably not eating at the right times or eating/drinking the right things in connection to my workout. Usually eat three hours before and go right to the gym after work. Guess…
  • Most of the strength training I do is in sculpt classes, but the spark people website has some really great instructional videos. Lots of toning ideas for different parts of your body to do at home or wherever you have access to equipment (or even without equipment). All great stuff. And it's free!…
  • Yeah, it's my first 8k and I want to do well. I'll stay away from the strength training. Thanks!
  • Any time I do a sculpting, toning, or an ab workout I notice that my heart rate is significantly lower than during a cardio workout like zumba, elliptical training, running etc. The HRM still works of course... you just won't see big calorie burn numbers. I'm also a fan of the cardio warm up before the toning. And in most…
  • I recently just purchased an HRM and found that I had way overestimated the amount I burned at the gym based on the cardio equipment readouts too. Just like you anywhere from 50-100+. I wasn't thrilled obviously, but I do feel that it's far more accurate. Combining my HRM calorie burn and MFP and no longer using the cardio…
