  • Just from a health perspective, losing weight is so much better for you. You don't realize how much you struggled with aches and pains, sore joints, shortness of breath and just general lethargy until you lose weight. This will affect your mood in a very positive way too.
  • The argument for excluding fiber is that it doesn't get digested so the carbs do not affect your blood sugar. Makes sense to me. In a similar vein, there are a class of carbs called sugar alcohols that are only partially digested. They are very sweet and occur naturally in food so technically they are not an artificial…
  • If you're willing to cook it for a long time (low and slow), a chuck steak will be tender. It has quite a bit of fat on it and it's cheap.

  • What's the discrepancy? One is denser than the other. That's to be expected for any two foods.
  • It took the 5th.
  • With all the walking you do at Disney, I wouldn't worry too much. Also, all the food in the park is so expensive that I found my wallet was a pretty good preventative device to keep me from overeating!
  • I eat eggs everyday and just use the large egg entry. It's may be off by +/- 20 calories on any given day but I figure it all averages out in the long term.
  • The serving sizes for cereals are ridiculously small. I've never seen anyone eat the suggested 28g of cereal without measuring. It's a depressingly tiny amount. Most people just fill up the bowl and that can be anywhere from 40g to 80g depending on the cereal and the size of the bowl.
  • set weight = eating habits. Change your eating habits and your "set weight" will change.
  • Exactly. Everybody loves to be outraged and play the victim. While I don't necessarily agree with the policy, it's hardly the massive encroachment on freedom that people are making it out to be. Living in a society means there are going to be rules we all have to abide by, even the ones we don't agree with. If school is…
  • Yes, you'd be surprised. Some of the students were part of a program to help children from low income families get into preschool. There were a lot of issues with basic parenting skills: what to feed you kids, how to clothe them properly for the weather, basic hygiene, making sure your child gets enough sleep to be ready…
  • What child was actually bringing potatoes to school for lunch?
  • My wife used to work at a preschool and more than a few parents would only send things like Oreos or a few graham crackers, often because they were ignorant of basic nutrition. Also, young kids are notorious for eating their cookies first and then being "too full" to eat the rest of their lunch. While I don't agree with…
  • If you're going to spam, at least come up with sufficiently different user names that don't make it completely obvious what you're doing.
  • I hear ya. This is one reason I avoid the treadmill whenever possible and run outside. No glowing timer silently mocking you because only 12 seconds have passed since you last checked it. If you must run inside, cover that smirking clock with your towel. Time your workout with music (8 songs roughly equals half an hour) or…
  • IMHO, nothing takes the place of a proper fitting. A good shoe store should be willing to spend the better part of an hour with you to find out not only what fits on your feet, but also what feels right when you run. The store I go to encourages you to go for a short run around the parking lot in each shoe, since that's…
  • An honest troll. Well, that's something different I guess.
  • 102. Create off topic threads that belong in the Chit-Chat, Fun, and Games forum.
  • Sugar alcohols frequently cause GI issues (bloating, cramps, diarrhea) when too much is consumed. They occur naturally in food but nowadays they are mostly synthesized from regular table sugar. Whether that makes them an artificial sweetener or not is up to you to decide. Unlike other sweeteners, sugar alcohols are not…
  • Oftentimes we hate something simply because we're new to it and we're just not all that good at it yet. When I started, I couldn't even walk fast for more than 5 minutes without feeling winded. Instead of being invigorated by exercising, I felt like a failure. Give it time and don't rush to increase your intensity. You're…

  • Being overweight is hard. Losing weight is hard. Choose your hard.
  • This. As I get older, looking ripped is less and less important to me, but a strong heart muscle is something I still want.
  • FWIW, back when I worked at McD's long ago the condiments like mayo, mustard and ketchup were all in tubes and dispensed using a caulk gun. The amount each burger got was pretty uniform. The ads always show someone slowly and lovingly spreading mayo on your burger with a knife but that's not what happens.
  • The Center for Disease Control, American Heart Association, Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, UK National Health Service, World Health Organization, European Heart Health Initiative plus pretty much every other major health organization disagrees with you.
  • I'm not sure getting a Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation will help with weight loss, unless you keep gaining weight due to pregnancy.

  • Then why did you start off with: That's hardly the same message. Also: Well regulated? The drugs in question are illegal street drugs, not meant for human consumption. That means they ARE well regulated. The regulations are clear: Don't take them and it is illegal to sell them as diet pills.
  • Even if Dr. Oz did want to do the right thing and inform the public about health issues, there is simply no way to perform the due diligence needed to verify the various claims his guests make and still be able to produce an hour long, daily show. Scientific inquiry takes time and costs money. Someone upthread mentioned…
  • Or just eat the real thing. Fresh snap peas are only like 45 calories for the same weight and have a great crunch to them.
