I don't weigh bread. There may be a 10% discrepancy, but it's still only 4g we're talking about. Your scale may not be that accurate and even if it is, the calorie estimate from the baker isn't going to be that accurate due to things like differing moisture content. Instead, I reason that the "1 slice" serving size is an…

My body's intuition tells me to eat when I'm hungry, bored, stressed, for pleasure, or just when I'm sitting around in front of the TV - basically whenever possible. I suspect I am descendant from a long line of people who managed to survive periods of famine by stuffing their faces when a surplus was available. Now of…

No, I don't accept that rationale. By giving airtime to snake oil salesmen on his show, Dr. Oz legitimizes their quackery. The right thing to do with charlatans is to expose and then marginalize them, not treat them as honored guests and give them a free advertising time to make their pitch to the masses. I suspect you are…

... if you have a food scale with you at all times. For food I don't make myself, I know that my entry is going to be inaccurate because I can't measure it. Knowing that, I far prefer database entries in volume rather than weight. I can guestimate volume like one cup to within 20% but I'm absolutely hopeless at…

a cardiothoracic surgeon actually, not a cardiologist. He's the guy with the knife in the operating room, not the guy reading your EKG and blood work and proscribing you pills.

You might be on to something... From nature.com Although as others have pointed out, there isn't all that much lactose in cheese itself.

"Chocolate" that has Hershey on the label. - fixed that for you

Desserts masquerading as coffee drinks Donuts unless they are fresh Plain white rice Cold breakfast cereals that leave me hungry 20 minutes later Almost anything from a cafeteria (usually unnecessarily breaded and fried and loaded with salt) Almost all fast food and food from chain restaurants (same reason) Cheap chocolate…

Sadly, it's pretty much the same for all kinds of nuts. Look at the serving size of nuts. It's usually 1 oz (28g) or about 1/4 cup. And even that small amount will set you back about 170 calories! You could eat almost twice as much ice cream for the same.

At best the jury is still out on saturated fat. The big 2014 meta analysis study that said saturated fat is AOK was highly publicized and reported everywhere, usually with snarky headlines: "Bacon is back on the menu!", "Haha, those scientists were all wrong about butter!". What hardly got attention, however, was the…

Yes. Splenda is the original brand name. Sucralose is the generic name. Sucralose is my go to artificial sweetener. It lacks the nasty after taste of aspartame and saccharine, you can cook with it and it doesn't trash my digestive system like sugar alcohols.

I used to but don't bother anymore. For most vegetables, even if you are a bad guesser, you're probably not going to be off by more than 10 calories. Down at that level, error from individual variation between the same type of vegetable and scale inaccuracy starts to dominate.

Amen. I have a relative with gout, a form of arthritis. To avoid bringing on painful inflammation, she has to avoid meat, fish, alcohol, and high fat foods. The gout diet is mostly fruits, vegetables, beans and complex carbohydrates - pretty much the polar opposite of a keto diet. Is it the right diet for her? Absolutely.…

I try to build up a calorie reserve during the week so that I can enjoy my weekends without fretting too much. Now if only MFP had tools that tracked your calories from week to week as well as from day to day!

You're right. A lot of the studies did not find a link but some did. That was the only point I'm trying to make. Today's findings do not automatically invalidate yesterday's unless you can find a flaw in the previous methodology. Science is slow to reach a consensus which is why all the headlines from last year proclaiming…

Yes there is. There are just other studies that disagree. The big meta study from 2014 that gave saturated fat the green light has been widely criticized. Even one of the study's authors now disagrees with its primary conclusion. The study created a media circus because scientists are a favorite target to knock off their…

And to put a finer point on it: Don't eat in front of the TV, computer, iPad, etc. Focus on your food when it's time to eat and make an effort to eat slowly.

I typically do 4 to 5 mile runs. I just don't have time for anything longer. I drink water but never eat anything before a run. The few times I've eaten before a run have made me feel sick.

Interesting. Their latest breakfast campaign assures us they start making your Egg McMuffin by cracking a fresh egg. This is a salvo against Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts who have taken quite a bite out of McD's breakfast market share but who reheat already created breakfast sandwiches shipped from a central location.

Yup. Are there individual variations? Sure, but they're not dramatic enough to overcome CICO. Every car off the assembly line is also slightly different from the others but the reason you're not going to get the same mileage as the other drivers is because no two people drive their car the same way. No one gets a car that…

I guess I look at the whole measuring thing differently than other people. I measured diligently at first, but mostly with an end goal to be able to judge portion sizes on my own one day. After all, I'm not going to go through life carrying a food scale around with me everywhere I go. To that end, I find volume…

They only seem pricey. Serving size is 1 oz so you are getting 16 portions for your $7.99, or 50 cents per portion. Not too bad really.

Actually, McDonalds is probably your best bet as far as chains go if you're watching your calories. A cheeseburger, small fries and a diet coke will only set you back 520 calories - not bad for a meal. They also have snack wraps, which despite the name are probably big enough of a portion for a meal, that check in at 260…

Science is not above being influenced by monetary pressures. Scientists need to eat too and so have to seek out organizations willing to fund research. Oftentimes, these organizations have a preferred set of results they'd like to see and are more likely to fund more follow on studies if the research points the way they'd…

You may not like my answer: Don't snack at work. Break the habit of turning to food when you are bored or stressed. Drink water. Get up and walk around. Call your SO. Check facebook. Make a new habit for coping and break the one that contributed to you being here in the first place.
-
Another vote for breaking the habit. Food should not be your go to solution for when you're bored.
-
And we have a winner! There are just so many yummy foods out there with carbs that I just don't see the point in unnecessarily restricting your dietary choices. What you need to restrict is the total amount. IMO, low carb is not many steps removed from other fad diets that steer you towards one small type of food, e.g. The…

Fork. Food's gotta get in my mouth some way.

Agree completely with this point. Food is neither our friend nor our enemy. It's what we need to stay alive and stay healthy. If we can enjoy it too, that's great but we shouldn't think of the pleasure aspect first and foremost. Food itself should be a means, not an end. This I disagree with. Exercise should be in the same…

I don't know how long this study has been going on but nowadays I think you'd want to include statistics on how much time the participants spend on the internet, or maybe include it in the TV watching. One hour of exercise per day seems like a lot and makes me wonder what activities are considered "exercise" by the study.
