I never eat before a workout, morning or otherwise. I drink some water but I don't like to eat just before being active.

When I was losing weight, I logged everything. Now that I'm in maintenance, I only log M-F and guestimate for the weekends. Typically, I eat over my allowance on Saturday and Sunday but I find if I eat at about a 200-300 calorie deficit on M-F, it will all more or less balance out. Ultimately I'd like to stop logging…

Eggs are fine. The cholesterol in them does not readily become cholesterol in your arteries. The very best thing you can do for your heart and your overall health is to not be overweight.

Not exactly. Your body needs the fatty acids and cholesterol that dietary fats are broken down into, however both cholesterol and all but two fatty acids can be synthesized by your body. The two that are not, so-called essential fatty acids, can be found in all kinds of fats, saturated and unsaturated. Although you need a…

From the article (and apropos to this thread): "the guidelines encourage Americans to focus not on the amount of fat they are eating but on the type. The guidelines advise people to eat unsaturated fat — the kind found in fish, nuts, and olive and vegetable oils — in place of saturated fat, which occurs primarily in animal…

To the contrary, it is quite on point. Avocados are the way they are because we bred them to be that way. You can't point at an avocado and say "See, it is a natural whole food that has a lot of saturated fat therefore saturated fats must be OK." We made them that way. On the flip side, cyanide naturally occurs in almonds…

Humans don't tend to eat foods found in nature. We eat foods that we have been selectively bred over the centuries to match our liking. The almonds that you find in nature, for example, tend to contain a lot of cyanide which has no nutritional value at all and is in fact a poison. You don't ever want to eat a wild almond.…

Yes and no. Like carbohydrates, saturated fat is essential for your body to function properly, however there is no recommended dietary minimum for saturated fat because your body can produce all that it needs. Too much dietary saturated fat otoh, has been linked to high cholesterol in many studies, however there are other…

Not sure I understand this post. Why was it shocking that the 1/2 cup of beans weighed 7 ounces? Were you expecting some other number? Are you perhaps confusing fluid ounces (a unit of volume) with avoirdupois ounces (a unit of weight)?
-
The MFP number seems high so I usually log only half my actual shoveling time.

Snacking is a habit, and a good one to simply break. I used to snack all the time too but quit cold turkey when I got serious about losing weight. After a few weeks, your mind will find something else to focus on. If all else fails, drink water. Make that your habit instead.

Your story is almost exactly a clone of mine. Atkins worked for me too, but damn did it get monotonous. I grew tired of having to prepare special meals for myself everyday while the rest of my family was eating "regular" food. And yes, I thought I would grow feathers and start clucking if I ate one more #$!@% egg! I did…

The already do highlight them. That's was the asterisk means. What MFP really needs is a search that automatically prioritizes search results this way: 1. Foods that I've selected in the past, i.e. search through all my recorded foods first. Sometimes it takes me a while to find something and it would be nice if MFP…

Not everyone does this and if you're not eating at home, chances are you aren't weighing your food. My bias is to prefer volume measurements, especially for food I don't cook. I find it nearly impossible to guestimate the weight of anything, but I can eyeball what a half cup of rice, pasta or ice cream looks like.

Wow, pizza is one of those things that's pretty easy to make taste good. Decent ingredients and the right mix of seasonings are usually all you need. That's where the chains usually fall down. It's not worth it for your local guy to save 15 cents per pie with sub-par ingredients but if you're a chain that makes millions of…

Since OP asked for opinions, I'll share mine. I low-carbed for about a year and a half. It worked but I found it too boring and too much of a hassle to stick to long term. I got really really tired of having to prepare my own "special" food every day while the rest of my family ate something else. Eating out requires…

Chain pizza is one of the truly bizarre things about America. You can go almost anywhere in this country and find a local pizza shop that A) has fresher ingredients, B:) will make almost any kind of specialty pizza you like, C) costs the same or is cheaper, and most importantly, D) tastes better. How the chain pizza places…

Yet our population continues to increase, year after year. Ultimately it's the total number of people and how they live that impacts sustainability. Looking at just birth rates provides a very incomplete picture.

I just quit the whole snacking at work thing cold turkey. May not work for everybody but it worked for me. I save my snacking for the evening when I can relax and enjoy them. My snacking at work was more stress related and really had nothing to do with hunger.

"All of the initial testings were repeated for days 15 to 17, and the results for days −2 to 0 and 15 to 17 were averaged." "Eleven participants enrolled in this study; two were medical students and declined to continue because of the amount of time required for the study procedures. Nine participants (six male, three…

I'd like to reiterate this point. I'm am always wary of preservative free foods because it means bacteria growth will occur far more quickly, especially if the food has not been prepared or stored in ideal conditions. Unless you made it yourself or watched it being made, you really don't know how safe that "all natural"…

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=junk%20food%20definition junk food noun food that has low nutritional value, typically produced in the form of packaged snacks needing little or no preparation. Seems like a perfectly reasonable and workable definition. And I suspect we all really…

Diet and exercise are the best routes to lower cholesterol but for some of us that doesn't overcome our genetic predisposition to high cholesterol. So far, statins seem to be the drugs of choice. In most people there are very few side effects. Having said that, if your cholesterol is bad enough to take statins, you should…

Coffee has a negligible amount of carbs and calories. Even if you add cream and/or artificial sweeteners to coffee, it's still very low carb.

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’ ’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’ ’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.”

When I was losing weight, I never tried banking but now that I'm in maintenance, I do it during the week so that I can enjoy the weekends without obsessing over "seeing red". In fact, I don't log my food on weekends anymore but make educated guesses and just do a Quick Add. I still weigh myself weekly to keep myself honest…

Actually, nuts are mostly fat, but they're the "good" fats that lower cholesterol. You do have to be mindful of portion size with nuts. A small handful of nuts (1/4 cup) typically runs around 170 calories whereas a serving of beans (1 cup) checks in at about 40 calories. I don't think anyone ever became overweight eating…

I think that's the key point of the article. While MFP'ers tend to be calorie savvy (that's why we're here!), the general public is probably unaware that the average meal ordered at Chipotle far exceeds the average meal from McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, etc. Just because it's old news to us doesn't mean it's common…

I mainly look at the calories number but I try not to obsess over it. I used to be too caught up in getting all my numbers perfect every day but now I have eased off that to the point where now I don't even bother to record my food at all on the weekends. I've learned enough about portion control to trust myself not to…
